Goals of the Curriculum

The goals of this curriculum in Pediatrics are to foster:

• Acquisition of basic knowledge of growth and development (physical, physiologic


and psychosocial) and its clinical application from birth through adolescence.
• Development of communication skills that will facilitate the clinical interaction

with children, adolescents and their families and thus ensure that complete, accurate
data is obtained.
• Development of competency in the physical examination of infants, children and
adolescents.
• Acquisition of the knowledge necessary to provide appropriate nutritional and fluid
support for infants, children and adolescents.
• Acquisition of the knowledge necessary for the diagnosis and initial management of
common acute and chronic illnesses, as well as common emergencies in pediatrics.
• An understanding of the impact of congenital and inherited diseases on children and
their families.
• Development of clinical problem-solving skills.

• An understanding of the influence of family, community and society on the child in


health and disease.
• Development of strategies for health promotion as well as disease and injury
prevention.
• Development of the attitudes and professional behaviors appropriate for clinical
practice.

Objectives

 Know the immunizations currently recommended from birth through adolescence
(including the benefits, limitations, adverse side effects, and contraindications of
each immunization)
 Master the pediatric case history writing and physical examination (take complete
medical history from: general condition, presenting complaint, presenting illness,
past history, birth history, mothers health during pregnancy, details of delivery,
personal history, family history, examine children of any age)
 Know well the characteristics of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis of children

 Know the pathophysiology of electrolyte disorders

 Master clinical manifestations and therapy of dehydration, hypokalemia and


metabolic acidosis
