IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction Let us have Mathinik in a Minute Drill as our starter!
Pick to Guess Game!
Choose 2 numbers for you to have the correct pair of the illustration and its
corresponding name.
In this lesson, you will learn how to visualize and describe the surface area of
solid figures that are polyhedrons such as cube, prism, and pyramid. You will also
learn the formula to be used in solving surface area of solid figures.
Let’s first review about the area of some plane figures.

Let’s take a look at this situation.
You wanted to recycle a small box you found at home for you to have a mini
pen organizer. You will be using decorative sticker paper to cover it and to make it
look new. How will you know the exact area of sticker paper for your box?
Visualizing and Describing
To determine the exact area of sticker paper for the small box, we need to get
the surface area of a rectangular prism. To determine the surface area, we need to
know what plane figure is represented by its faces.
The illustration shows the six faces of rectangular prism. Through solving the
areas of these faces we can get the surface area of the rectangular prism. Another
way of describing the surface area of a solid figure is through determining the area of
its net. A net is a flat pattern that you can fold to form a solid figure.
The teacher will show an illustration of the net of a rectangular prism
represented by the small box.
To solve for surface area, you need to get the area of its faces. SA = area of left
side + area of right side + area of front + area of back + area of top + area of bottom
Thus, the surface area of a rectangular prism is 𝑺𝑨 = 𝟐 (𝒉 × 𝒘 + 𝒘 × 𝒍 + 𝒍 × 𝒉) 𝒐𝒓
𝑺𝑨 = 𝟐(𝒉 × 𝒘) + 𝟐(𝒘 × 𝒍) + 𝟐 (𝒍 × 𝒉) Surface Area of a Cube A cube has six square
faces. The total area of its six square faces is equal to its surface area.

Surface Area of a Triangular Prism A triangular prism has three rectangular
lateral faces and two bases which are triangles. The sum of the areas of the bases and
lateral faces is its surface area.
SA= 2(1/2 b x h) + 3 (l x w)
Surface Area of Pyramid Pyramid is a solid whose base is a polygon and whose
lateral faces are triangles with a common vertex (apex) is called a pyramid.
SA= L.A. + B or SA= 4 (1/2 b x h) + s2
The surface area of the pyramid is the sum of the area of its polygonal base and
triangular faces.
Ask: Why do you need to be accurate in measuring the things around you?
B. Development Units of Measure for the Surface Area To measure surface area, we use also
square units. We use square millimeter (𝑚𝑚2), square centimeter (𝑐𝑚2 ), square
decimeter (𝑑𝑚2 ), square meter (𝑚2 ), square kilometer (𝑘𝑚2 ), square inch (𝑖𝑛 2 ),
square foot (𝑓𝑡 2), square yard (𝑦𝑑2 ), or square mile (𝑚𝑖 2 ).
Study the illustration how unit of measure for surface area of the rectangular
prism is used.
