Diagramming G 1

Sentence diagramming is a visual method used to analyze and represent the grammatical structure of a sentence. It involves breaking down a sentence into components like the subject, predicate, objects, and modifiers. These components are illustrated on a diagram using lines and symbols to show their relationships. Diagramming allows students to see the picture of the sentence structure and requires analyzing the meaning to correctly identify what modifies what in the sentence. Examples demonstrate how simple sentences, those with objects, prepositional phrases, and compound subjects/predicates can be visually diagrammed.

DIAGRAMMING

A sentence diagram is a pictorial

representation of the grammatical
structure of a sentence. The term
"sentence diagram" is used more
when teaching written language,
where sentences are diagrammed
How do you structure a sentence in a
diagram?
The diagram of a simple sentence begins with a
horizontal line called the base. The subject is written
on the left, the predicate on the right, separated by a
vertical bar that extends through the base.
Diagramming allows students to see the picture of the
sentence. Diagramming also requires critical thinking
and reading comprehension. You have to analyze the
sentence and understand what it really means to be
able to figure out what modifies what and which
words go together as phrases and clauses.
Diagramming sentences is a visual method used
