DIAGRAMMING
A sentence diagram is a pictorial
representation of the grammatical
structure of a sentence. The term
"sentence diagram" is used more
when teaching written language,
where sentences are diagrammed
How do you structure a sentence in a
diagram?
The diagram of a simple sentence begins with a
horizontal line called the base. The subject is written
on the left, the predicate on the right, separated by a
vertical bar that extends through the base.
Diagramming allows students to see the picture of the
sentence. Diagramming also requires critical thinking
and reading comprehension. You have to analyze the
sentence and understand what it really means to be
able to figure out what modifies what and which
words go together as phrases and clauses.
Diagramming sentences is a visual method used
to analyze and represent the grammatical
structure of a sentence. It involves breaking down
a sentence into its different components and
illustrating their relationships using lines and
symbols.
Here are a few examples of how sentences
can be diagrammed:
1. Simple Subject and Simple Predicate:
- Sentence: "The cat sleeps."
- Diagram:
The | cat | sleeps
|_____|______|
Article | Noun | Verb
2. Direct Object:
- Sentence: "She ate an apple."
- Diagram:
She | ate | apple
|____|____|____|
Pronoun | Verb | Noun
3. Prepositional Phrase:
- Sentence: "The book is on the table."
- Diagram:
The | book | is | on | the | table
|_____|_____|____|____|____|______|
Article | Noun | Verb | Prep | Article | Noun
4. Compound Subject and Compound Predicate:
- Sentence: "John and Mary went to the park and played soccer."
- Diagram:
John | and | Mary | went | to the park | and | played | soccer
|_____|____|_____|____|_____________|____|______|______|
