ENGLISH. EVENT 2023
English Event is an ohnastEnalck competition held by
students of Mercu Buana English Club (MBEC) from
Universitas Mercu Buana. The purpose is to encourage
the younger generation to develop and train their skills,
especially in international languages.

“AVIOTHIC : LEVITATE AND ELEVATE”THE THEME

Aviothic: A strong will to fly
Levitate : To rise or cause to rise into the air and float in apparent
defiance of gravity.
Elevate : To move into a higher place or position
THE CONCEPT
The concept of EE 2023 aims to motivate the next generations
to develop their potential and soar across challenges as actions
of preparation to seize future opportunities,
The concept of EE 2023 illustrates a connection between
challenges and excitement through a festive carnival. This
concept is a contrast to the modern depiction of challenges
that are often associated with hardships. Through the festivity
"Carnival, the young generations could gather the courage to
take upon challenges, utilize their creativity, and cherish the
experience.: .

Scrabble. Speech, Spelling Bee, and Storytelling.

4. Each institution is allowed to send 5 (five) participants at
maximum in each branch of competitions. hs
5. The participants must be registered and pod the Paiteation
fee before May 31th, 2023. . +2
6. The registration fee does not include any accommodation
coverage.
7. The commitice of English Event 2023-will not provide a refund
for those who are disqualified or quit for any reason. Unless the
competition is canceled due to a lack of minimum participanis,
the registration fee will be refunded. (

PREFACE
This competition i is a speech competition held by
Mercu Buana English Club as its annual agenda. This
competition has been held several times with different
themes. The theme raised this year is Aviothic: Levitate
and Elevate. The meaning of the chosen theme is. ona
person is rising (levitating), they must have the, intentidh
to soar accross the atmosphere (elevating). 43
This speech competition will be held in a hybrid where
the preliminary round will be held online and the final
round will be held offline. This competition will also be
judged by professional judges.

wsGENERAL RULES
“1. Participants must be an active University student in Indonesia.
2. Participants must register themselves according to the registration
time determined by the committee. ;
3. Participants are allowed to bring only one companion.
“4. The participant must attended the technical meeting that will: :
be held on 3rd June 2023, Otherwise, you will not get further
information about the competition.
5. The competition willbe held in two rounds which are the_,
Preliminary Round and Final Round. eae
6. The speech must not contain any sensitive content, violent or
insulting content regarding any cultural, political, or religious/belief.
7. The decision of the judges is absolute and inviolable.
8. The participant should wear appropriate outfits (for example :
white shirt or black suit) to suit the formality occasion: T-shirts and

9. Participants who arrive late will be disqualified. unless you have a
reasonable reason and get permission from the committee.
10. Submitting time for preliminary round will be held on 5th June to
- Bth June 2023 (Deadline at 8iH June on 23,59 WBB).
11. The final round will be held offline in Mercu Buana University on
June 20th 2023. in -
12. Timing will begin when the participant starts by verbal
communication with the audience.

1. Participants of the competition are individuals from
varsity students. ‘
2. The speech must not contain any sensitive content,
violent or insulting content regarding any cultural, polite
or religious/belief.* *
3. The speech must be in English
4. The decision of the judges is absolute and inviolablé_
5. The Participants should wear appropriate ouwits (for
example : white shirt or black suit) to suit the formality *

performance.
7. The participants must perform original speech that has
never been used for any competition

famous figures as long as their names are mentioned.

»Preliminary Round Theme
1. We have to work hard to gain the universe

1. The type of speech that is submitted by participants is well
prepared speech.
2. The video resolution must be recorded with a minimum of
726MP in a landscape orientation
3. The video duration is 5-7 minutes. If participants perform
the speech less than or more than the duration, peatiear:
will get the minus score. (minus 1 score every 1 second) ”
4. The particpants are not allowed to do zooming

5. The video must be uploaded ‘on YouTube. The participants
need to send the link to Google Form which will be

Indonesia Time. If the participants exceed the time limit of
submission, the video is no longer accepted. If you have
sorhe troubles (for example : slow uploading speed) during
submission, please contact your LO. ©.

topic that will be given by the committee and the particip

occasion. Participants are also allowed to use University jacket

7. The participant will be disqualified if he/she doesn’t
show up after being called 3 times without any reasonable

keep running.9. Upon being introduced, the participant shall proceed
immediately to the speaking position. Timing will begin

SPELLING BEE COMPETITION

PREFACE
Spelling Bee competition is one of the competition’ e
branches of English Event 2023. This field of competition
is aimed so that the participant can enhance their English
vocabulary, showcase their spelling skills, and also’prac-
tice their knowledge in English. This competition is “gen
to senior high school students and varsity. It will be h¥ld
offline at Mercu Buana University. 4

. The competition will be held offline in two days
. There will be 5 rounds a nd will be divided into two days:
First Day: Written Test, Traditional Spelling, and
Backward Spelling.
Second Day: Words Attack and Jumble Wofd
. The score from the first day of competition will be accumulated
and the participants with the highest score will go to the next-
round in the second day. :
Participants should attehd 15 minutes before the competition
start. :
Committee will do role call 2 times at the beginning: ofthe
competition, and 1 time each a round starts.
Late participants are allowed to compete with no additional
time given. If more than two persons are late to the rooin, ‘the
game will be postponed for 15 minutes. * "
Participants are prohibited to use any kind of electronics during
each round.
Participants cre prohibited to do any kind of cheating action
during each round. &
. The dictionary used in the competition is Merriam-Webster
Dictionary. re
10. If a word contains more than one correct spelling and listed in
the dictionary, the participants still have the correct point(s).
11. Participants are not allowed to wear t-shirts without collar. It is
allowed to wear T-Shirt with a collar or university jacket.
12. Participants are not allowed to use flip-flops.
13. Participants have to spell the word with “Say-Spell-Say”
technique.Participants must use CAPITAL LETTER for the Written Round.

spelling the word.

ROUND 1 - WRITTEN TEST - (PRELIMINARY ROUND) - (DAY)
1. Participants will be given an answer sheet, by. the
committee. : ae
2. Pariicipants must bring their own pen (stationery)? *
3. There will be 40 words to be pronounced by the judges.
A. The judges will pronounce the words twice, complete with
the definition ‘
and the type of the words. z mB
5. The answer should be written in capital letters.
6. If the participant feels the word that they have written is
incorrect, they only have one (1) chanée to rewrite the correct one
besides the wrong one that has been crossed with two lines.
7. Participants will have 30 seconds to-write the answer.ROUND 2 - TRADITIONAL SPELLING - (PRELIMINARY ROUND) - (DAY 1)
1. The participants will be called one by one. The
participants will be invited to the breakout room by the
committee (LO / Liaison Officer) to move from the Main
Room ;
2. Each participant has to spell 15 words. ee
3. The judges will give complete information of the word,
which are the werd itself, the definition of the word, ind”
the type of the word. :
4, The participants may ask the judges to repeat the word
once if they feel unclear. - 6g
5, The participants have to spell the word with the rgles
“Say - Spell - Say”. .
6. The participants have to spell from the first letteb of the
word until the last letter of the word correctly. ~ Pe

spell.
ROUND 3 - BACKWARDS SPELLING - (PRELIMINARY ROUND) - (DAY 1)
1.The participants will be called one by one. The
participants will be invited to the breakout room by the
committee (LO / Liaison Officer) to move from the Main

2. Each participant has ta spell 15 words. *
3.The judges will give complete inforthation of the word,
they are the word itself, the definition of the word, and
the type of the word. ;. The participants may ask the judges to repeat the word
ONCE if they feel unclear.
. The participants have to spell the word with the rules
“Say - Spell - Say”.
. The participants have to spell from the last letter of the
word until the first letter of the word correctly.
. The participants. are not’ allowed to re-spell the
misspelled words,
. Participants will be given fotal 20 minutes to think and
spell in this round. s
The correct answer will be accumulated from the three“rounds
that have been done and the participants with the highest score
will go to the next round in the second day. x

. The participants have to spell from the first letter of the word
