Fiery Server SSD Installation Guide

This document provides instructions for installing Solid State Drives (SSDs) to replace Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) on a Fiery server. It describes making backups before installation, paying attention to disk usage sizes, adjusting the server BIOS settings to recognize the SSDs, and procedures for removing HDDs and installing and connecting the SSDs. SSD capacities will be slightly smaller than their listed sizes, so leaving extra free space is recommended.

SSD Installation Instructions

This document describes how to install Solid State Drives (SSDs) on a Fiery server.

Note that the capacity of the SSD is slightly smaller than that of the HDD. When you replace the HDD
with the SSD, make sure that all data in the HDD is transferred to the SSD safely. Always keep extra free
space in the HDD before you replace it with SSD.

For the HDDs that are configured as RAID 0, EFI recommends that all HDDs in the RAID 0 be replaced
with SSDs for the maximum enhanced performance.

Before you install the SSD, we suggest you consider the following items:

• Create a backup image of the Fiery server.

Installing an SSD might erase all the data including the Fiery system software and operating
system. Be sure to make a backup so that you can restore the system after you install the SSD.
Save the backup files in a network share folder or a USB flash drive.
Use the Fiery System Restore utility accessible from Command WorkStation or WebTools. See the
Installation and Service Guide for detailed instructions. To back up the jobs in the Fiery server,
use Fiery Archive Manager accessible from Command WorkStation. See the Command
WorkStation Help for the instructions.
If you did not create a backup, you might need to install the system software after installing
the SSD. See the Installation and Service Guide for the procedure for installing the system
software.

• Pay attention to the disk usage.

The actual capacity you can use for the SSD is slightly smaller than the size of the SSD, e.g.

• 480GB SSD - 447GB available

• 980GB SSD - 894GB available
• 1.92TB SSD - 1.78TB available
Always allow some extra space for the SSD. If the available space in the SSD becomes less
than 5%, it may cause a performance issue.

• Adjust the Fiery server BIOS Settings.
It is important that you select correct device type in the BIOS settings on the Fiery server. After you

install the SSD, make sure to change the SATA device type for the SSD.
See “To change the BIOS information for the SSD” on page 5 for instructions.
• Do not discard the original HDDs.
Do not throw away the HDD that you replaced with SSD. If a problem occurs after you install the
SSD, you will be able to restore the HDD to the original slot and avoid downtime for the Fiery
server.
Procedures
Caution: Wear an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding wrist strap and follow standard ESD precautions while
performing this procedure. For details, see the Installation and Service Guide.

Removing the HDDs from the system

For the detailed instructions, see Installation and Service Guide.

To remove the HDDs from the Fiery server

1 Shut down the Fiery server, remove the side panel, and access the internal components.

2 Disconnect the SATA data and power cables from the HDD(s).

3 Remove the HDD assembly from the Fiery server chassis.

4 Remove the HDD(s) from the bracket that you are going to replace with the SSD(s) by removing
the screws that secure the HDD(s) to the bracket.

To install the SSD in place of the 2.5” HDD

1 Attach the SDD to the bracket.

The bracket used in the system may vary depending on the system. See the illustrations
below (Figure 1) for assembling the SSD and bracket.

2 Reinstall the SSD assembly in the Fiery server chassis (see the Installation and Service
Guide).

3 Reassemble the Fiery server (see the Installation and Service Guide).

To install the SSD in place of the 3.5” HDD

1 If a bracket (see Figure 2) is attached to the 3.5” HDD:

a) Remove the bracket that is attached to the 3.5” HDD by removing the four screws.

b) Attach the SSD to the bracket using the screws.

c) Install the SSD assembly in the HDD slot (see the Installation and Service Guide).

2 If a bracket is not attached to the 3.5” HDD:

a) SSDs can be installed using standard 2.5” to 3.5” drive bay mounting bracket kits. These

kits are commercially available from many on-line retailers.

b) Attach the SSD to the bracket (see Figure 3). Use the four screws to secure the SSD with

the bracket.

To change the BIOS information for the SSD
Note: This procedure applies to the standalone Fiery server that is running on the

Windows operating system. This procedure requires a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to

be available on the Fiery server.

To enter BIOS Setup to change the setting for the SSD

1 After you press the power button to power on the Fiery server, press and hold the DELETE
key.

2 Move the cursor to the SATA DEVICE TYPE and choose SOLID STATE DEVICE for the SSD.

3 Go to the Save Options and choose Save Changes and Exit.

Note: If the CMOS is cleared, this BIOS option will be cleared, and you have to re-configure
the option.
