Grade Level: Grade 7
Learning Competency: Explain how solar and lunar eclipses occur using models.
Code: using models.
Code: S7ES-IVh-9
Engage (10 minutes)
Objective: To engage students and activate their prior knowledge about eclipses.
1. Ask students if they have ever seen an eclipse before. If yes, let them share their
experience. If no, ask them if they have heard about eclipses before.
2. Show pictures or videos of solar and lunar eclips of solar and lunar eclipses and
ask students to describe what students to describe what they see.
3. Ask students what they already know about eclipses and what they want to learn
more about.
Explore (20 minutes)
Objective: To allow students to explore and discover the concept of eclipses using
models.
1. Divide the class into groups of 3-4 students.
2. Provide each group with a flashlight, a small ball, and a larger ball. each group
with a flashlight, a small ball, and a larger ball.
3. Instruct the students to use the flashlight as the sun, the small ball as the moon,
and the larger ball as the Earth.
4. Let the students experiment with moving the moon and the Earth around the
"sun" and observe what happens to the shadow of the moon.
5. Ask students to describe what they observe and what they think is happening.
Explain (20 minutes)
Objective: To provide students with a clear explanation of how solar and lunar eclipses
occur.
1. Use the models created by the students to demonstrate how solar and lunar
eclipses occur.
2. Explain the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse.
3. Discuss the positions of the sun, moon, and Earth during a solar and lunar
eclipse.
4. Use diagrams and videos to enhance the students' understanding of the concept.
Elaborate (30 minutes)
Objective: To allow students to apply their knowledge and deepen their understanding of
eclipses.
1. Provide each group with a worksheet containing questions about eclipses.
2. Instruct the students to answer the questions using the models they created and
the information they learned during the lesson.
3. After completing the worksheet, ask the students to share their answers with the
class.
4. Encourage students to ask questions and clarify their understanding of eclipses.
Evaluate (10 minutes)
Objective: To assess the students' understanding of eclipses.
1. Ask students to create a diagram or a model that shows the positions of the sun,
moon, and Earth during a solar and lunar eclipse.
2. Ask students to explain the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse.
Evaluate the worksheets completed by the students during the Elaborate stage.
QA for Assessment:
1. What is a solar eclipse and how does it occur?
2. What is a lunar eclipse and how does it occur?
3. What is the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse?
4. Can you explain the positions of the sun, moon, and Earth during a solar and
lunar eclipse?
5. Create a diagram that shows the positions of the sun, moon lunar eclipse?
6. Create a diagram that shows the positions of the sun, moon, and Earth during a
solar or lunar eclipse.
Sample Activities:
Create a model of a solar eclipse using a flashlight, a small ball, and a larger ball.
Watch a video of a lunar eclipse and describe what you observe.
Draw a diagram that shows the positions of the sun, moon, and Earth during a solar
eclipse.
