How to describe a map
How to organize a report to get high score in Task Achivement & Coherence-Cohesion
Introduction: paraphrase the words (development, extension/ expansion) of the question,
feature all the key names and time periods (introduce the shift also).
Overview: (khả năng đánh giá quy mô và mức độ thay đổi) pay attention from the whole to
the details, from the biggest changes to the smallest. Select or group these changes into 2-3
key points.
Body 1: Describe the first map/ 1 or 2 biggest changes.
Body 2: Describe the second with changes/ the other changes.
(be noticed: pay attention to what the readers/listens are looking for, proofreading is
essential step to make a report perfect).
When describing changes, you should include 3 elements: location, function, size.

The language used in a map discription is very important.

Các kế hoạch xây dựng trong tương lai, nên dùng tương tại đơn (will) vì không biết chắc
chắn nó xảy ra hay không, ngoài ra có thể kết hợp các động từ chỉ dự án như: is projected
to, is planned to, is proposed to.

Ex1: The maps below show the changes that have taken place at the waterfont area
of a town calles Darwin between 2009 and 2014.
The maps display the transformation in / show/depict how S V the waterfront area of
Darwin town over 2009-2014 period.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that
Overall, (it is clearly inferred from the maps that) there are significant/radical changes
with the most noticable being the replacement of industrial area with the greenery and the
addition of some facilities in the lower part of the town.
With regards to/Regarding/In terms of/For the huge industrial area in the south of the
town, it has been replaced by many trees, making it more suitable for the increasing number
of people living here. Contributing to this, a set of 3 new blocks for residents has been
built next to the old ones and a new university buidling has emerged on the left-hand side of
the area. In addition, a new harbour has been constructed on sea, which directly connects
to a new footpath running through this area to the west road of town.
Up to the smaller area in the north of the map, which is circulated by a footpath, the
industrial zone in this place has been altered by a new swimming pool. On the other hand,
other existing amenities (/such as two swimming pool, the fishing area) including a school,
a conventional area, a lake, two swimming pools and a fishing area remain unchanged.

The maps shows the transformation in the sports court of a university.

Xét về khu bên trái của bản đồ, 1 BC mới được xây dựng với sự hy sinh của khu công
viên. Bãi đỗ xe, mà ngày trước tọa lạc ngay dưới khu công viên, nay đã bị thay thế
bởi một tổ hợp gồm 4 sân tennis.
With regards to the left-hand side of the map, a new basketball court has been built at
the expense of the park. The car park, which was inititally situated right
below/beneath the park, now has been altered by a set of four tennis courts.
Tổ hợp thể thao (sport complex) ở bên phải của bản đồ chứng kiến một số thay đổi
quan trọng. Đầu tiên, cái bể bơi ngoài trời ở khu phía bắc được chuyển đổi thành bể
bơi trong nhà để giúp người bơi tránh ánh nắng mặt trời. Bên cạnh đó, khu tennis
court ở sát dưới của khu vực này đã được mở rộng và chuyển đổi thành 1 fitness
centre. Cuối cùng, phòng thay đồ đã được kéo dài và đặt lại/di chuyển vào ngay phía
trên của khu fitness. Café, & reception giữ nguyên.
The sport complex on the right-hand side of the map has witnessed several profound
changes. Firstly, the outdoor pool in the north of the area has been converted into the
indoor pool in order to help swimmers avoid sunlight. In addition, the tennis court at
the bottom of this area has been enlarged and transformed into a new fitness centre.
Finally, the changing room has been extended and removed adjacent to the top of the
fitness centre. The café and reception zone have remained unchanged.
