BIOGRAPHY

THE MURDER ● Thomas Dewald murdered his children
Christopher, 12, and Jennifer, 10, by
drowning them in Lake Erie on August 13,
1998.
● Dewald’s motive was an obsession with
his ex-girlfriend, and felt that his
children were obstacles that stood in
the way of his relationship.
● Tina Marlatt, his girlfriend at the
time, had told Dewald that his daughter
was clingy and annoying, but admitted
this was just to get away from Dewald.
● He pleaded guilty to two counts of
second-degree murder and received a life
sentence in March 1999.

HOW WAS HE CAUGHT
● Dewald told police he was sleeping on the beach when his kids
drowned.
● Ms.Marlatt then worked in cooperation with the police to get a
confession to her on tape.
● They succeeded in getting a confession out of Dewald,
● After being confronted by the police, he confessed to holding them
underwater until they unfortunately passed.
● He pleaded guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, The guilty
plea followed two weeks of legal arguments over the admissibility of
audio and videotaped evidence.
