Effects of EM Radiation on Health

This document outlines a lesson plan on the effects of electromagnetic (EM) radiation on living things and the environment. The objectives are for students to understand the EM spectrum, explain effects of EM radiation, and create a concept map summarizing benefits and hazards. The content includes the EM spectrum, effects on living things, and managing radiation effects. Procedures include a pre-assessment quiz, activity matching EM waves to uses/effects, analysis of each wave type's effects, and a post-assessment. The goal is for students to recognize both benefits and importance of managing hazards from different EM radiation.

Building Science Vocabulary

 RADIATION – is energy that comes from a source and travels
through space at the speed of light.
 IONIZING RADIATION – it is a type of low-energy radiation that
does not have enough energy to remove an electron from an atom
or molecule.
 NON- IONIZING RADIATION- form of energy that acts by removing
electrons from atoms and molecules of materials that include air,
water, and living tissue.
 RADIOACTIVITY - is the act of emitting radiation spontaneously.
 MILLISIEVERT- is a radioprotection unit measuring the radiation
dose received either from a radioactive source.

Motivation
Students will observe images that show effects of EM radiation on living
things and the environment

 What do the images imply?

 How do you feel after you are exposed to your devices for too long?

B. Activity

what matches to the types of radiation with its use and its effect on living
things.
