Coal Mining Cycle Time Calculations

1. The document provides information and calculations to determine cycle times and coal production rates for a section of a coal mine. It includes calculations to determine cycle time for a continuous miner given place change time, car change time, and other factors. 2. It then provides a calculation to determine the new total cycle time if battery-operated coal haulers replace shuttle cars, assuming different hauling capacities and turn times. 3. Finally, it shows calculations to determine the total coal produced per year by a shearer based on seam height, web thickness, panel width, number of passes, efficiency rate, and operating schedule.

ACTIVITY 7

B. Problem Solving (30 POINTS)

1. Determine the cycle time per working place and the output rating of a gathering arm loader for a
section of the coal mine in the sample problem in the PowerPoint presentation (5.1pdf) . Given the
following additional information:
Place Change Time : 3.5 min
Car Change Time : 0.6 min.
Delay/Place : 2.2 min.
Shuttle/car Capacity : 8 tons (7.3 tonnes)
Shuttle Cars/Place: 2

2. Assume that three battery-operated coal haulers are projected to replace the shuttle cars in the
section layout from the sample problem below. Assume that each vehicle can haul 10 tons. Further
assume that each turn time adds 0.30 minutes to the cycle. If the coal haulers have discharge times
of 0.35 minutes and every other consideration remains the same, what is the new total cycle time, in
minutes?
Since the in-by cycle time is 0.32+1.25+0.32=1.89, and the out-by cycle time is
0.61+0.30+0.35+0.61+0.20=2.17 , the continuous miner has to wait (WSC) for shuttle car 1 to return to the
CP for carloads 3,5, and 7 for a total of:
= (3) (2.17−1.89)
= 0.84minutes
TT, the tram time for the miner to go from the end cut 1 to the face cut 2 has been determined to be 4.11
minutes, thus
LCT=9.72+5.13+0.84+4.11=19.8minutes

3. Shearer production calculation. The coal produced by the shearer can be easily calculated using
the seam height, web width, and panel width. For every pass, the total amount of coal produced
(CP) will be:
CP = (seam height)(web thickness)(panel width) (Equation 1)
Assume the following values for Equation 1:
• Seam height = 62 in.
• Web thickness = 47 in.
• Panel width = 1,000 ft

(a) What is the total amount of Coal produced?

SOLUTION:
The coal produced 5.2 ft. x 3.9 ft. x 1,000 ft. = 20, 280 ft^3
20, 280 ft.^3 = 20, 280 x 84 lb./ft^3
CP = 20, 280 x 84 lb./ft^3
CP = 1,703, 520 lb. = 851. 76 st.

(b) Determine the total coa produced in one cycle.

SOLUTION:
851. 76 st. x 2 = 1,703. 52 st
Assume that the shearer finished the cycle in 1 hr. therefore, the production from shearer with 75%
efficiency
= 1,703. 52 x 1 hr x 0.75
= 1, 277. 64 st

(c) Calculate the total production of coal per year.

SOLUTION:
= 1, 277. 64 x (10 hr. shift) x 2 shifts/days x 300 days
= 10, 221, 120 st/yr.
