Course Description
The Course of Islamic Studies Compulsory has been designed to introduce to the students the
fundamentals of Islam. The contents of the course revolve mainly around four major aspects i.e.,
Textual Study of the Qur'ān, Textual Study of Hadith, Study of the Prophetic Sirah and the Study
of Islamic Civilization and Culture. Selective text of the Qur'ān and hadith provides an insight to
the students regarding Islamic beliefs, practices and Ethics. The study of Sirah is aimed at
resolving contemporary issues in the light of the Prophetic Uswa –e- Hasanah. The study of
Islamic Civilization and Culture highlights the factors, components and distinctive features of
Muslim Civilization.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

3. learn Islamic Ethics and Manners
4. be aware of the Prophetic Seerah and the fundamental of Islamic Civilization

Rationale
The course of Islamic Studies is significant in terms of providing an opportunity for students to
have been taught the fundamental teachings of Islam including Creeds, Practices and Ethics. It
teaches them some applied aspects from the Prophetic Seerah that surely may help in character
building. The Course throws light on the glory of Islamic Civilization and the foundations behind
thus a sense of pride is instilled into students and they may prepare themselves to work harder
and play their due role to get it back.
Course Material
Professor Khan Muhammad Chawla’s (former faculty member and chairperson of the
Department of Arabic & Islamic Studies) Aden Islamiyat has been selected mainly as source
material. It covers almost all the contents of the course such as the Study of the Qur'ān, Study of
Hadith, Study of the Prophetic Seerah and Study of Islamic Civilization and Culture. Some other
books relevant to the course content have also been mentioned as reading material.
Teaching Methodology
Instructional practices, thematic and theoretical strengths will mainly be used to teach course
content to have a moderate and balanced approach to Islam and religious life.
Time Allocation
32 hours is the maximum duration for teaching this course.
Assessment
Assessment measures comprise university exams, term papers, assignments and viva voce to
look for evidence of critical thinking and intellectual ability in students.
The examination will consist of 100 marks divided as follows:
Mid Term Examination = 20 marks
Assignments & Presentations = 30 marks
Final Examination = 50 marks
Assessment Rubrics / Performance Descriptors
The midterm test will consist of one objective question (MCQs) containing 10 marks and two
questions to be attempted out of three each containing 5 marks. Each question will be evaluated
according to the prescribed criteria.
