SPEAKING TEST FOR GEP 1 (Units 1-5) (Updated September 2023)

SPEAKING TEST GUIDELINES


(GEP 1)
DURING THE TEST
PART ONE: Personal introduction (30 seconds)
- Invite the students to sit down.
- Ask the students to introduce themselves (full names, student IDs) and then sign the exam marking
sheet.
PART TWO: Conversation (1.5 - 2 minutes; 60% marks)
- Ask students to start their conversation.
PART THREE: Discussion (40% marks)
- Ask each student 2-3 questions to clarify a few points they mentioned in the conversation or to
help them expand the topic/their answers.
For the final speaking test, students are expected to work with their partner towards making a
complete conversation of about 1.5 - 2 minutes using the language functions they have learned from
Unit 1 to Unit 5. Students can simulate the suggested situations below or make up their own
situations and prepare a conversation in advance.

Language functions in GEP 1
Unit 1: Meeting people
Unit 2: Describing people
Unit 3: Talking about things
Unit 4: Talking about places
Unit 5: Making arrangements

Work in pair and role-play a conversation about ONE of these following topics:
 Remember that the conversation should last from 1.5 to 2 minutes.

SUGGESTED TOPICS:
Topic 1. You are talking to your classmate about a well-known person that you both know.
Both of you should talk about
+ Who he/she is
+ What he/she is well-known for
+ Why you feel greatly impressed by him/her
+ How this person influences your life.

Topic 2. You are talking to a classmate about a teacher both of you are impressed with.
Both of you should talk about
+ Who he/she is
+ What you like about his/her personality
+ Why you feel greatly impressed by him/her
+ What you like about attending his/her class.

Topic 3. You and your friend are going on holiday. Discuss what you are going to take with
you.
You should share with your partner information about
+ Where you are going on holiday
+ What you are going to take with you
+ Why you think such things are necessary.

Topic 4. You and your classmate are going to buy a gift for another classmate.
Both of you should talk about
+ On what occasion you would like to give him/her the gift
+ What gift you would like to buy for him/her
+ Why you think the gift is perfect for him/her
+ Where you would like to buy the gift.

Topic 5. You and your classmate are talking about a club at your university.
You should share with your partner information about
+ What club it is
+ How often you go to the club
+ What activities you can do in the club
+ Why you like to go to the club.

Topic 6. You and your classmate are talking about the advantages of learning English at
your university.
You should share with your partner information about
+ How long you have learned English
+ What advantages you have when learning English at your university
+ What daily habits you have in order to improve your English
+ How much your English skills has improved.

Topic 7. You and your classmate are making a plan to spend the weekend together.
Both of you should discuss
+ What plan it is
+ Where you are going
+ What activities you are going to do
+ Why the activities are interesting for both of you.

Topic 8. You are having a conversation with your friend about one item, except a cellphone
or a computer, that is important to you.
You should share with your partner information about
+ What the item is
+ How often you use it
+ What you often use it for
+ Why it is important to you.

Topic 9. You and your classmate are talking about a place at your university that both of
you like to visit.
Both of you should talk about
+ What the place is
+ How often you get there
+ What activities you can do
+ Why you like to visit it.

Topic 10. You and your friend are making some arrangements to eat out together.
You and your partner should talk about
+ When you want to go out together
+ Where you are going to eat out
+ Why you want to eat there
+ What you are going to do after the meal.
