II. In this section you will find a number of questions or unfinished statements about
the passage, each with four suggested answers or ways of finishing. You must choose
the one you think fits best (Câu 361 – Câu 410)

I was born to dance. I've been dancing all my life, ever since my mother, who gave up a
dancing career on the stage when she married my father, picked me up and twirled me
around as an infant. As much as I loved dancing with her, her greatest gift to me was her
"unconditional love" during her lifetime. My parents divorced after only 5 years of
marriage, but my father remarried a lovely lady who also loved to dance. They used to
take me to a dancing club where I would listen to the music and watch them dance-
occasionally my stepmother, Mary, invited me to dance. I also met my wife, Charlotte, in
a dancing party. I danced with her for about 15 minutes, and during that brief span, I
realized that I fell in love with her. We kept dancing throughout our marriage. My earliest
memories of dancing with my daughters started when I came home from work to our
small home in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and my daughter Laura was about 3 years old.
It was very relaxing for me to turn on the record player, pick up Laura in my arms, and
dance her around the room! Our family danced a lot. My daughters, Laura and Anne, and I
continued to dance on every occasion. One favorite memory I have of dancing with Laura
and Anne was when I took each of them when they were seniors in high school to the
Daddy-Daughter dance. We won both dance competitions! As their father, I have tried to
provide my daughters with unconditional love, as my Mother provided to me, endless
emotional and loving support, and good educations and life experiences which have
helped prepare them for happy and successful adult lives. Being a father who is worthy of
their love and respect, I consider fatherhood a privilege, not an entitlement. In 1994, my
oldest daughter Laura gave me a lovely book, which I still have, entitled "Fathers and
Daughters." My Father's Day suggestion to every father is to dance with your daughters at
every opportunity. It will not only bring you closer, it will give them memories of you “to
hang onto" long after we are gone.

Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain traditions
play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries. Englishmen are
proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. It has been a law for about 300 years
that all theaters are closed on Sundays. No letters are delivered, only a few Sunday papers
are published. To this day an English family prefers a house with a garden to a flat in a
modern house with central heating. English people like gardens. Sometimes the garden in
front of the house is a little square covered with cement painted green in imitation of grass
and a box of flowers. Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different in
Scotland, Ireland and England. Christmas is a great English national holiday, and in

By the year 2025, the Earth could lose as many as one fifth of all species known to exist
today. In recent centuries, hundreds of species have disappeared, almost always as a result
of human activities. The passenger pigeon, one familiar example, was a source of food
until excessive hunting and habitat loss caused its extinction in 1914. The North American
bison, whose populations were decimated by settlers and market hunters in the 1800s,
came close to sharing the same fate. Bison survive today only because of the efforts of
early [Link], species require such efforts more urgently than ever. An
essential task that falls to present-day conservationists is to determine which species are
most, endangered, so that conservation resources can be applied where action is needed
most. Species are categorized by the degree to which their survival in the wild is
threatened. World Wildlife Fund offers a sampling of animals and plants that fall mainly
within the two most serious categories of- threat: critically endangered and endangered.
What threatens these species's existence? Some of the top threats are habitat destruction
by unsustainable logging and ever-encroaching human settlement; pollution of water, soil,
and air by toxic chemicals; unnatural climate changes due to fossil fuel use; unmanaged
fishing that exhausts fish stocks; and illegal hunting to supply the demand for skins, hides,
traditional medicines, food, and tourist souvenirs. The list which conservationists presents
only a fraction of the species at risk of extinction today and does not include thousands of
species whose status we do not yet know. Hundreds of species without common names
have been left out, which means that while many mammals are on this list, only a few
insects and mollusks are [Link] listed here range from the largest animal on
Earth, the blue whale, to the majestic tiger, to the humble thick-shell pond snail. Large or
small, beautiful or ugly, all species play a role in the complex circle of life. All of us
depend on the natural resources of our planet. Each time a species is lost, the complexity,
natural balance, and beauty of our world is diminished. And what threatens plants and
animals ultimately threatens people as well.

Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them, for example, that
you want to be friends with them or that you don’t trust them. But perhaps this kind of
intuition isn’t as hard to explain as it may seem. For instance, people give out their body
language signals all the time. The way you hold your body, head and arms tells people
about your mood. If you hold your arms tightly at your sides, or fold them across your
chest, people will generally feel that you are being defensive. Holding your head to one
side shows interest in the other, while an easy, open posture indicates that you are self-
confident. All this affects the way you feel about someone. Also, a stranger may remind
you of a meeting with someone. This may be because of something as simple as the fact
that he or she is physically similar to someone who treated you well or badly. Your
feelings about a stranger could be influenced by a smell in the air that brings to mind a
place where you were happy as a child. Since even a single word can bring back a
memory such as that, you may never realize it is happening.

Instructors at American colleges and universities use many different teaching methods.
Some instructors give assignments every day. They grade homework. Students in their
classes have to take many quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final test. Other instructors give
only writing assignments. Some teachers always follow a course outline and usually use
the textbooks. Others send students to the library for assignments. The atmosphere in
some classrooms is very formal. Students call their instructors “Professor Smith”, “Mrs.
Jones”, and so on. Some teachers wear business clothes and give lectures. Other
classrooms have an informal atmosphere. Students and teachers discuss their ideas.
Instructors dress informally, and students call them by their first names. American
teachers are not alike in their teaching styles. At most American colleges and universities,
facilities for learning and recreation are available to students. Students can often use
recorders, video machines, and computers at libraries and learning centres. They can buy
books, notebooks, and other things at campus stores. They can get advice on their
problems from counsellors and individual help with their classes from tutors. Students can
relax and have fun on campus, too. Some schools have swimming pools and tennis courts.

Years ago, because of the lack of good medical care, diseases were the most terrible threat
to the early people. Of course, they had no pills, tablets, or capsules as we do today. They
used to eat herbs or tree barks to cure many diseases. They also knew that food had great
effects on their health. Actually, the medicines that we take today are mostly extracted
from herbs, tree barks, plants and food. For example, in the 17th century, the Peruvian
Indian ate cinchona bark when they had a fever. They learned this from experience only.
Until 1816, some pharmacists extracted quinine from the cinchona bark. It is used in the

You have probably heard about the unappealing dried foods that astronauts eat in space,
such as the chalky ice cream and powdered pea soup. That means all the water is removed
from those foods. But did you know that there are more than 90 different food and drink
items on NASA’s space menu? (NASA is the American government organization
concerned with spacecraft and space travel. NASA is an abbreviation for ‘National
Aeronautics and Space Administration’) Many food items are dehydrated to prevent
bacteria growing, so water must be added before consumption. But some foods look like
those ready meals you find in the supermarkets, made hot in the microwave. In fact, the
chefs have recently provided some gorgeous meals for the space crew. Astronauts choose
their individual food selections on Earth, getting to taste it all first beforehand. Drinking is
another matter. Although much is brought up with the astronauts and in cargo deliveries, a
lot is recycled from human waste water. Yes, the water they use could have been someone
else’s urine a day ago. You cannot be squeamish if you are an astronaut!

The Asian Games owes its origins to small Asian multi-sport competitions. The Far
Eastern Championship Games were created to show unity and cooperation among three
nations: Japan, the Philippines and China. The first games were held in Manila, the
Philippines in 1931. Other Asian nations participated after it was organized. After World
War II, a number of Asian countries became independent. Many of the new independent
Asian countries wanted to use a new type of competition where Asian dominance should
not be shown by violence and should be strengthened by mutual understanding. In August
1948, during the 14th Olympic Games in London, Indian representative Guru Dutt Sondhi
proposed to sports leaders of the Asian teams the idea of having discussions about holding
the Asian Games. They agreed to form the Asian Athletic Federation. A preparatory
committee was set up to draft the charter for the Asian amateur athletic federation. In
February, 1949, the Asian athletic federation was formed and used the name Asian Games
Federation. It was decided to hold the first Asian Games in 1951 in New Delhi, the capital
of India. They added that the Asian Games would be regularly held once every four years.

Between the Revolutionary period and the World War I, the United States post office was
set out to improve transportation of the post office mails. From those early days to the
present, the post office has helped develop and subsidize every new mode of
transportation in the United States. Transportation has been the most important element in
mail delivery. Even when the general public had still suspected of the security of a now
means of transportation, the post office experimented with inventions that, offered
potential for moving the mail faster, occasionally suffering embarrassment., ridicule, or
even abuse in the process. As mail delivery evolved from foot to horseback, stagecoach,
steamboat, railroad, automobile, and airplane, with intermediate and overlapping use of
balloons, and helicopters, post office mail contracts ensured the income necessary to build
the great highways, rail lines, and airways that eventually spanned the continent. By the
turn of the 19th century, the U.S. Post Office had purchased a number of stagecoaches for
operation on the nation’s better post roads - a post road being any road on which the mail
travels - and continued to encourage new designs to improve passenger comfort and carry
mail more safely.

We are already at 6.3 billion in population and that may have something to do with our
inability to eradicate hunger and poverty in the world. The world’s populations continue to
expand every year, even as the political leaders give a lot of other reasons. The more
populous the world is, the more problems we have to suffer. In other words, the world
needs more money to pay for the fixes. All of the social problems of the world would be
much easier to solve with a declining population, and better to accomplish this through
enlightened policies than through plagues and wars. Although with progress in science and
technology, food resources are increased, the world’s population expands to overwhelm
the increased productivity. We need healthy ecosystems, but in our pursuit of progress, we
have destroyed good parts of our rural landscapes and wildlife. Our whole experience
shows that we can run out of our resources in the future. We, the human beings of the
modern world, have always been able to invent ourselves out of problems. We tend to see
only the good side of science and technology. We are enjoying our comfortable .

Are there intelligent beings on other planets in our solar system? Most scientists don’t
think so. If there is, the only likely place is Mars.
It is fun to imagine our kind of human on other planets, but they would probably look so
different that we might not recognize them as people at all. Living things have a
wonderful way of adapting themselves to conditions around them in order to stay alive.
Plants grow in the Arctic. Some simple animals can survive being boiled or frozen.
Creatures can live in the blackest depths of the sea under thousands of tons of pressure.
We can really say that our kind of air is the only kind living things could breathe, or that
they must have water of certain climate. Creatures that breathed other gases or lived in
temperatures that would kill earthmen, however, certainly wouldn’t look like US.
Are there people anywhere else in the universe? Maybe there are. In our own galaxy there
are millions of stars. Some must have planets with conditions like those on earth.
Somewhere in space there could be other thinking beings. If their planets is older, they
may know more than we do. They may be traveling in space.

We were sorry to hear about the accident. Anyway, you mustn’t feel too anxious about
work. A lot of people are away on holiday this month, so there’s not as much business as
usual. When you are feeling a little better, we’d like to come and see you; we’ll bring
some of your favourite chocolate. Now for office news. Have you heard that the boss is
getting married next month? She tried to keep it quiet but one of the secretaries heard her
talking about wedding arrangements over the phone, so now of course everyone knows!
We’re collecting money to buy her a present. It’s really difficult to know what to get her
as she had most things. Someone has suggested theatre or concert tickets, which is a good
idea. We can find out from her personal assistant what her plans are and when she has a
free evening. The only problem is that although we know what she likes, we don’t know
whether her future husband shares her tastes.
All being well, we’ll see you some time next week. Until then we all send our good wishes
and hope you recover quickly.

come back feeling fit and healthy
C. What bad luck! Anyway, glad things aren’t serious. Keep smiling and see you
soon.
