14
Trim Material Selection

Factors Influencing trim material selection

 Body materials
 Same Trim is limited to different temperature for different body materials

 Pressure drop
 Fluid temperature
 Potential for corrosion/erosion
 Fluid lubricant properties

15
Gaskets

 Cage gasket

 Bonnet gasket

 Seat ring gasket

16
Construction & Visual Features of Gasket Types

Flat sheet gaskets:

 Reinforced with wire screen for strength
and durability
 Used as bonnet and seat ring gaskets

Spiral-Wound Gaskets: High-Temperature Spiral Wound Gasket

 Flexible while providing a tight seal
 Used as Cage gasket
 Compensates for
expansion/contraction of seat ring/cage
height

17
Packing Options
Packing creates a tight seal between the packing bore and the valve stem to
prevent fluid leakage to atmosphere.

Selection criteria for packing includes:

– Low friction so that the actuator can stroke the valve.
– Compatibility of packing components with the process fluid.
– Compatibility of packing parts with the service temperature.

18
Spring Loaded PTFE Packing

Features :
1) Pressure assisted packing 4) V-shaped packing rings
2) Smooth stem requirement 5) Low friction& Good chemical compatibility
3) Constant loading with spring 6) Temperature limit of 232 deg C

19
Double PTFE Packing

 Spring replaced by another set of

PTFE V- rings
 Different orientation of V-rings for
pressure and vacuum service.
 Default packing for NACE
applications
 Lantern rings used to provide support
to packing.
 Adaptors form flat surfaces so that
packing mates with other components

20
Graphite Packing

Features :
 High temperature services
 High friction packing
 Includes flexible die formed rings and braided filament rings
 Graphite packing has consolidation issues
 Sacrificial zinc washers for galvanic corrosion protection
21
Enviro-Seal PTFE Packing

Features

 Low Leakage
 Few packing rings for higher
stress on each ring
 Live loading through Belleville
springs
 Extrusion rings to retain shape
of PTFE rings
 Complies to Emission Norms

22
Enviro-Seal Graphite Packing

23
Enviro-Seal Graphite Packing
 Low emission at temperatures up to 600
deg F
 Composite rings to transfer loading force.
 PTFE washers for tight seal through
extrusion
 Guide bushings to prevent lateral
movement

24
High-Seal Graphite Packing, Live Loaded

Features :
 No PTFE washers
 Used up to 1200 deg F
 Does not comply with emission norms
 Higher friction than Enviroseal
 Visual indication of packing load
 Adjustable loading to overcome consolidation issues

25
Bonnet Options
 For protection of packing and yoke from extreme temperatures.
 Creates a temperature gradient between valve body and the packing.
 Different types of extension
 Plain bonnet
 Style 1 extension
 Style 2 extension
 Cryogenic extension

Plain Bonnet Extension bonnet

26
Enviroseal Bellows Bonnet

 Features :
 For extremely low leakage requirements (0 PPM service)
 High corrosion resistance
 Available with Hastelloy C or Inconel Bellows
 Reliable and extended cycle life
 Connections for purging and monitoring is available
