1.0 Background of Innovation

Curtains have been used since ancient times, but they were nothing like the product we
know today. Before textiles could even be comprehended, animal hides were used for warmth
and privacy. Suspended from doorways and any large gaps in the home, the hides would stop
drafts and assert boundaries. Over in ancient Egypt, early textiles began to emerge, starting with
linen and flax, and closely followed by cotton and silk. By the Middle Ages, these woven textiles
had found a place in the home. Though there’s little evidence, it’s assumed that the fabrics were
used specifically to combat the cold, as blankets, bed hangings and curtains.

It wasn’t until the 13th century that glass making commenced in Italy, so up until then, there was
no other way to prevent drafts than draping windows with heavy fabrics. Of course, while
successfully keeping out the cold, the thick draping stopped any light from entering the home.
This issue was solved during the Renaissance, when glass paned windows emerged, and
curtains then transformed from shields against the elements to drapes used for privacy.

By the mid-1800s, mass production machinery had developed, making household textiles
readily available. The most popular type of window dressing was lace curtains, and much like
clothing and accessories, they were a demonstration of social ranking. So the more complex the
curtain, the richer you were! Technology and fashions changed, and silks, Holland linen and bold
prints made an entrance, along with fringing on both blinds and curtains. By the early-20th century,
the advancements in synthetics completely changed the landscape of the textile industry, and
more attention was paid to cheapness and easy maintenance.

A few years down the line and World War II had begun, and along with food, clothing and
petrol, fabrics were rationed. Old duster fabric and parachute silk was used for curtains, and if
there was enough material spare, tiebacks were fashioned too. Curtains had now become an
essential part of homes. Throughout the rest of the century, curtain fashion changed as regularly
as hairstyles. Department stores now offered readymade curtains, so it was quick and simple to
grab a new pair for a reasonable price. In the ‘50s, florals were big, along with abstract prints that
were inspired by science and technology. The 1970s were all about pastels and ethnic textiles,
and stripes and checks were popular through the ‘80s.

2.0 Problem Identification

We have find out 3 problems of the curtain that people always get;

a) Light gap between two curtains.

b) Gliders always break due to pulling the curtains to hard.
c) Gliders stuck because of too much frictions.

3.0 Innovation of Product

3.1 Explain in details on proposed innovation

The product that we proposed for the innovation is curtain with modern concept included
technology engineering. The curtain is suitable for the window to avoid from light go through inside
of house and the others. We add the modern concept of curtain which are the curtain will close
the gap of the light between the left side and right side of curtain. So, the design of curtain will
look as modern curtain. We use push button as on and off button to open and close the curtain.
We use the roller for the curtain to move from left side to the middle or from right side to middle.
The roller will be either on top or bottom of the iron rods. When we hit the on button, the roller will
move and brought curtain to close the window. The roller will move until ends of middle of iron
rods. So the curtain will close the gap of the light between the curtain left side and right side.

3.2 Improvement for the proposed innovation

(1) The design that we created for the curtain is modern concept. The curtain will close the gap
of the light. The design was different from the previous style of curtain which are our design will
create a zero gap of the light of the curtain.

(2) The curtain will use the concept of technology which are semi auto. We use roller to move the
curtain to close the window. We use pushbutton on and off to move the curtain.

(3) The curtain concept are using motor as our semi auto function. The function of motor to make
the roller move as we hit the pushbutton on or off.

7.0 Expected Outcomes

By proposing this proposal, we expecting that our innovation would ease the task in handling the
curtains. By just pressing the buttons, this curtains will open and closed automatically. The buttons
we use is just a simple push buttons that we 100% sure people will not having any difficulty in
handling them. Next, as we are getting into Revolution Industry 4.0, everything will work by using
technology. So, we innovate a product that can goes along with the flow of the technology world.
By the end of the day, we expect that our innovation will be able to compete with other innovations
that growing rapidly. Lastly, we want to innovate something new and modern. So, we expected
that our innovation will be accepted and widely used by people around the world.
