Workshop

The document discusses various metalworking techniques and tools. It describes three common filing methods (cross, draw, and lathe filing), defines threading and threads, explains thread terminology, and lists the advantages and applications of thread manufacturing. It also discusses different types of rivets and their uses, compares welds, screws, and rivets as joint types, and lists factors for choosing joints. ASSIGNMENT 1

1.List most commonly used filing method in workshop, explain their defferece and use.

-there are 3 methds of filing

A. Cross filing : is commonly used that it could be considered normal filing. examples of

tasks that require cross filing include deburring the edge of a piece of

metal, removing scale from pipes and sharpning a chainsaw.

B.Draw filing method : is a technique used for producing smooth, sequare edges,

particularly on pieces of metal. the process works by moving

any type of single cut file forwards and backwards along the length

of the material's edge.

C.Lathe filing : is used to smooth and shap cylindrical pieces of material, such as wooden

chair legs and finishing and polishing cylinderical objects which require more

precision and finer cutting.

2.Define thread and threading in workshop, and explain their differences.

Threading: is manufacturing and metal processing method used to creat the helical detailed

edge of a screw to enable it to be fastened to another piece of metal or material.

Thread: is something continuous drawn out such as a line of reasoning or train of thought

that connects the parts in sequence.

3.Explain thread terminologies in detail.

-Major diameter - it is the largest diameter of the thread which would touch the crests.

-Minor diameter - it is the smallest diameter of the thread which would touch the roots.

-Pitch diameter - it is a middle diameter between the major and minor diameter of screw

threads or diameter b/n two crests.

-Root - the deepest part of the grove that correspondes with the minor diameter.

-Flank angel - this is the angle made by the intersection of the two thread flanks.
-Crest - is the top part of the grove that corresponds with the major diameter.

-Helix angle - angle that the thread makes with the plane perpendicular to the thread axis.

-Flank - thread surface that connects crest with root.

4.what are the advantage and application of thread manufacturing process?

Advantage: -we can execute multiple taskes of an application at a time.

-reduces the complexity of a big applications.

-helps to improve the performance of an application drastically.

-utilizes the max resources of multiprocessor sestems.

-better user interface in case of GUI based application.

Application: -usage in a web server ,power analysis, semaphore implementation ,testing

RTOS threads.

5.what are the common types of rivets and their application areas?

-there are 4 basic types of rivets

A.blind rivets : are permanent joints used mainly fastening sheets and shaped rolled

metal. They are used in lap, abutment, and double cover plate joints. They can be

used for constructing a metal bridge, hoisting cranes, boilers, and presure tanks.

B.Tubular rivets : widely used in light fixtures, HVAC ducts, electronics, ladders, and

brakes, among many others.

C.Solid rivets : are commenly used in aerospace manufacturing applications and used to

fasten two or more parts together.

D.Split rivets : they have sawd or split bodies with sharp ends to make their own holes

through leather, fiber, plastic, or soft metals. they are not used in critical application.

6.Explain weld, screw threads and rivet joints, compare and contrast them and list the advantage and
contrast them and list the avantage and application area of each type of joints.

-weld : is afubrication process whereby two or more parts are fused together by means of heat,
pressure or both forming a join as he parts cool.
# permanent joint, thus welded assemblies can not be dismantled without rupturing the structures.
since welded assembly can not be dismantled without destroying it, so repair or replacement is tough
and costly.

-rivet : are bolt like device used to secure two pieces of metal togther.

# is one permanent joint, thus riveted assembly cannot be dismantled without rupturing it.performance
of rivet joints under vibration is excellent, even better than weld joints.riveting requires compressive
force for upsetting the protruding end of rivet shank.

-screw thread : gives an intermittent type joint as afinite pitch exists between two adjucent

bolts or screws.

# is one temporary joint. so the threaded assemblies can be dismantled easily without breaking the
structures. repair or replacement of threaded assembly is easier and cost efficent because it can be
dismantled asand when required.

7.What factors should be considered when choosing a metal joint?

-first, according to the corresponding use environment, the appoprate structure and materials are
selected.second according to the type and temprature of the fluid, the appropriate structure and
materials are selected.third, according to the structure of the automatic switch valve, select the suitable
golden flexible pipe joint.

8.What's wood working? List at least 10 wood working hand tools and their use.

- is the process of making decorative and useful objects from wood, like cabinates, fine tables,
instrumentand more.

-screwdrivers : insertion and removal of screws.

-chiseles : breaking up materials and removing shavings from a material.

-saws : for cutting hard material.

-files : to remove or smooth rough and sharp edges from cut material.

-pliers : for gripping and holding small article or for bending and cutting wire.

-hammers : drives nail and pulls nail out of wood.

-vises : for holding a workpiece.

-wrench : for gripping, fastening, turning, tightening and loosening things.

-tape measure : flexible ruler to measure length or distance.

-wire cutters : to snip and strip wires.
