The children in the
picture look happy!
Do you think they
are strong and
healthy, too? What
makes them strong
and healthy?
For the body to become strong and healthy, it has to meet its
needs. When the needs of the body are given, a child like you can
grow and develop, and become active and alert.
What does our body need?
Our body needs food, air, water, clothes, shelter, exercise, rest
and sleep, and proper hygiene.
Food
We need food to keep us alive and
to help us grow strong and healthy.
Fresh Air
We need air to breathe to stay
alive. Growing children need plenty
of fresh air.

Water
After we run and play, we feel
thirsty. We need to drink water to
keep our body hydrated (maintain
water in the body). We need to take
at least 8 glasses of water every day.
Water also removes wastes from
our body.
Clothes
Clothes protect us from cold
weather and the heat of the sun.
Shelter
Children need shelter to protect
them from the rain, strong wind, and
too much heat.
Exercise
Exercise makes us active and alert.
It makes our body strong.

Rest and Sleep
When we work and play, our body
gets tired. Rest and sleep help us to
get active again. Sleeping is the best
kind of rest. Growing children need 8
to 10 hours of sleep every day.
Proper Hygiene
When we take a bath, we keep our
body clean. We wash our hands to
avoid sickness. We brush our teeth to
make them strong and healthy.
SAQ-1: Can you name the different body needs?
What are those?
SAQ-2: Why do we need shelter?
