Comparing Graphs Assign 3

The document contains 3 sets of questions comparing graphs of different relationships. The first set asks the student to graph fuel consumption over distance for two cars, and examine the initial values and rates of change. The second asks the student to graph the height of stones thrown by Jack and Jill over time, and compare the rates of change at different times. The third asks the student to graph population growth over time for two towns and compare initial populations, population changes in different years, and whether one town's population will exceed the other. The student is asked to analyze the graphs and relationships in each case.

COMPARING GRAPHS

Do all 3 graphs on DESMOS and just answer the any one set of following
questions.

Before you upload your file, ensure your name appears on the top of every page of your
document.

1. The Choi family owns two cars. Mrs. Choi collects data on the fuel
consumption of each car, and develops the following relationship between
the distance driven and the amount of fuel remaining.

Car A: F = 60 - 0.08d
Car B: F = 80 - 0.12d

F represents the amount of fuel remaining, in litres.

d represents the distance driven, in kilometres.

a) Use technology to graph both equations on the same axes.

b) What is the initial value of each relation? Explain the significance of these values in
the context of the problem.

c) Compare the rates of change for each relation. Explain the significance of these
values in the context of the problem.

2. Jack and Jill are standing on a bridge. They each throw a stone as high as
they can and allow it to land in the river below. The following equations
show the relationship between the height of the stones above the river, and
the time.

Jack: h = –5t² + 15t + 10

Jill: h = –5t² + 20t + 10

h represents the height of the stone, in metres

t represents the time, in seconds

a) Using technology, graph both equations on the same set of axes.

b) What is the initial value for each equation? How is this represented on the graph?
What does it mean in the context of the problem?

c) What is the meaning of the rate of change at a specific time?

d) Use your graph to compare the rates of change at each time listed below. (In other
words, is the rate of change positive, negative, or zero for each person, and which
graph has a greater rate?) Do not have to calculate the actual number.

i) 0 seconds
ii) 1.5 seconds
iii) 2 seconds
iv) 3 seconds

3. The populations of two towns are modelled with the following equations,

Smallville: P = 1000(1.12)t

Grandville: P = 5000(1.06)t

P represents the population.

t represents the time, in years since 2000.

a) Using technology, graph both equations on the same set of axes.

b) What is the initial value for each equation? How is this represented on the graph?
What does each initial value mean in the context of the problem?

c) Determine the change in population of each town from 2000 to 2001. Which town has
a greater increase over this time period? What does this imply about the steepness of
the graphs in this time interval?

d) Repeat part c) for the year 2020 to 2021.

e) Will the population of Smallville ever exceed that of Grandville? Justify your answer.
