We would like to express our special thanks of gratitude to our teacher Mrs. Lovely
Gaur, who gave us the golden opportunity to do wonderful project of OPTOISOLATORS on
“TRANSISTOR OPTOISOLATOR”. We came to know about too many new things, we are
really thankful to mam.
Also we would like to thanks all the friends who have supported us while doing this
microproject. Once again we thank you for providing us opportunity to express our gratitude
and boosting our confidence.

ABSTRACT
In this project we have perform the experiment of OPTOISOLATOR. We have
explained the working, circuit diagram, waveforms and advantages and disadvantages
in detail. We have also made the working model of optoisolator.

Introduction
Opto-isolators or Opto-couplers, are made up of a light emitting device, and a
light sensitive device, all wrapped up in one package, but with no electrical connection between
the two, just a beam of light. The light emitter is nearly always an LED. The light sensitive
device may be a photodiode, phototransistor, or more esoteric devices such as thyristors,
TRIACs etc.
A lot of electronic equipment nowadays is using opt coupler in the circuit. An opt
coupler or sometimes refer to as opt isolator allows two circuits to exchange signals yet remain
electrically isolated. This is usually accomplished by using light to relay the signal. The
standard opt coupler circuits design uses a LED shining on a phototransistor-usually it is a npn
transistor and not pnp.

Working
➢ The LED-phototransistor opto coupler is shown in above figure.
➢ Infrared led act as a light source and the phototransistor act as a photodetector.
➢ It is most popularly used optocoupler.
➢ When pulse at input goes high,LED turns ON. The light emitted by the led is
focused on the COLLECTOR BASED junction of the phototransistor.
➢ In response to light photocurrent start flowing which act as a base current for the
phototransistor.
➢ The collector current of phototransistor start flowing.
➢ As soon as input pulse reduces to zero LED turns OFF and the collector current
of phototransistor becomes zero.
➢ We have taken the capacitor of 1000microfarad and resistor of 5.6k ohms and
1.6kohms. As soon as collector current start flowing through optocoupler ic led
turns on.

Waveforms
8
Advantages
➢ It is small in size and light weight device.
➢ Current controlled circuit are well protected due to electrical isolation.
➢ Wideband signal tansmission is possible.
Disadvantages
➢ Slow speed.
➢ Possibility of signal coupling for high dv/dt signals.
Conclusion
➢ Thus, we have observed waveforms and understood the working of LED
phototransistor optocoupler.
