About the artist


Luna first began studying painting at the Academia de
Dibujo y Pintura in Manila, closely associated with
Madrid's Academia de San Fernando which Luna later
attended in 1878 after departing for Spain. Luna
painted literary and historical scenes, some with an
underscore of political commentary.. Juan Luna’s
historical painting “Spoliarium” made entry in 1884 to
the prestigious Exposiciond e Bellas Artes (Madrid Art
Exposition, May 1884) and eventually won for him the
First Gold Medal.

"Spoliarium" is a piece of art created by Juan Luna, a Filipino artist. It stands tall
at 4.22 meters. Spans 7.675 meters wide making it a significant and sizable
contribution, to the history of Philippine art. The painting portrays an intense
scene set in Rome. In the heart of the canvas we witness fallen gladiators being
carried away from the arena after a battle. Their lifeless bodies are being
prepared for disposal as they lie on a stretcher, surrounded by spectators and
attendants. The ambiance is solemn, with play of light and shadow that heighten
the impact of this captivating moment.

Analysis
Spoliarium" holds a significance, for Juan Luna. It was painted during a
period of social turmoil in the Philippines as the nation fought for
independence from colonial rule. Luna, who had journeyed to Europe to study
