REFRATECHNIK Report No. 44 REFRACOAT Refratochnik Cement GmbH A 0 1 [email protected] wontreta.com oO REFRACOAT - a heat-resistant protection for reducing corrosion of rotary cement kilns As a result of the increasing use of bumable residues as fuel, there has been a consi- erable increase in the chemical load on rotary cement kilns through alkalis, sulphate and chloride compounds. This adversely influences the service life of the refractory lining, and also results in intensified thermo-chemical corrosion (“scaling") of the steel shell of the kiln, A diagrammatic representation of the reactions occurring during corrosion of the kiln shell is given in Fig. 1. Schematic mechanism of shell corrosion KO + SOySO, + HO + Cl + (CVE) 0, + 4 1 L t L Cr and v5" +O, _ from kiln gas as O, donors + OH" in the form of or catalysts water vapour 4+CP from hydrolysis of KCI FeO Fe,0, «Fe (Op 203 Feo, Fe(OH), +S" _ from $0,/S0y/S0, (redox) + OH (hydrolysis) FeSp (FeSO,, Fer(SO,), L Corrosion of shell, covering with scale (during operation) and rust (when inoperative) (Scaling= Oxidation by dry gases at elevated temperature (S, Gil) Rusting = Oxidation by moist air or water of condensation at low temperatures (KCI!) Bartha: Untersuchungen zum Problem der Ofenmantelkorrosion Refratechnik Symposium 1986, Symposium Volume, Géttingen 1986, pages 105-123) ‘The products of the reaction are compounds according to the Fe-S-O ternary system as shown in Fig. 2. Depending on the concentration, the resulting substances are magnetite (Fe,0.), haematite (Fe,0.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and pyrites (FeS,). Corrosion is additionally accelerated by the presence of KCI, NaCl and water vapour. Existing methods of reducing kiln shell corrosion (coating with cement or phosphates) have been successful only temporarily and under certain conditions.
