LESSON 10: Communicative Strategies

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to:
1. Define what communicative strategy is.
2. Enumerate the types of communicative strategies.
3. Discuss each communicative strategy.

Communicative Strategy
These are plans, ways or means of sharing information which are adopted to achieve a
particular social, political, psychological, or linguistic purpose.

Types of Communicative Strategy


1. Nomination- collaboratively and productively establish a topic.

2. Restriction- limitation you may have as a speaker.

3. Turn-taking- process by which people decide who takes the conversational floor

Seven Strategies in Turn Taking


a. Speak, then ask
b. Use conjunctions
c. Teach phrases for agreeing/ disagreeing
d. Teach phrases for asking for/ giving options
e. Teach fillers for pauses
f. Avoiding interruptions
g. Fluency over accuracy

4. Topic control- covers how procedural formality or informality affects the development
of topic in conversations.

Tips on how to Control a Conversation


a. Briefly answer the question, but quickly move to a message you’d like to give
b. Pose a new question and answer it yourself
c. Redirect the conversation to what you want to talk about
d. Stop talking

5. Topic shifting- involves moving from one topic to another.

6. Repair- refers to how speakers address the problems in speaking, listening and
comprehending that they may encounter in a conversation

Types of Repair Sequences


a. Self-initiated self-repair: Repair is both initiated and carried out by the speaker of
the trouble source.
b. Other-initiated self-repair: Repair is carried out by the speaker of the trouble
source but initiated by the recipient.
c. Self-initiated other-repair: The speaker of a trouble source may try and get the
recipient to repair the trouble--for instance if a name is proving troublesome to
remember.

d. Other-initiated other-repair: The recipient of a trouble source turn both initiates
and carries out the repair. This is closest to what is conventionally called
'correction.'"

7. Termination- refers to the conversation participants’ close-initiating expressions that


end a topic in a conversation

Examples of Termination
1. Prolonged clarificatory statements
2. Further questions
3. Continuation of topic already discussed

Tips on How to Terminate a Conversation


 Be Negative: Be generally negative and poor company.
 Body pointing: Pointing your body away from the other person.
 Caught short: Say you need to go to the toilet.
 Closed questions: Create short answers.
 Declare completion: Say that the conversation is ended.
 Excuse yourself: Just excuse yourself and leave.
 Feign ignorance: Be unable to answer their questions.
 Introduce a friend: So, you can excuse yourself.
 Out of time: Have another appointment.
 Phone calls: Use the phone to call you away.
 Procrastinating: Putting discussion off to another time.
 Short answers: That give no reason to extend.
 Slow down: De-accelerate to a standstill.
 Spot a friend: Wave to a friend and go to see them.
 Stand Up: Stand up as if to leave.
 Summarize: Describe the essence of what has been said.
