INTRODUCING THE NEXT GENERATION SHELL TELLUS S2 MX & VX
KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS
Shell Tellus S2 MX &VX helps customers improve reliability
and productivity of hydraulic systems*, which can
contribute to reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) , by
Current Tellus S2 M was developed in the late 1990s and launched in 2002 (Tellus S2 V in 2004)
Since then, it has been an extremely successful product for Shell Lubricants, but is now showing its age
14 years of activity have been focused on supply chain flexibility (multiple packages and base oils), not
improving performance
The growing availability of Gp II base oils and market general packages from the main suppliers create a low
entry barrier to competitor products with good paper credentials
Sales and support staff do not get sufficient time with the customer to develop the story of Shell Tellus proven field
performance
Demand for global consistency has constrained us to the original Gp I Brand Standard
Resulting in falling volumes in many markets, and creating the need for product refreshment
Modern hydraulic systems are more compact A modern hydraulic fluid in order to protect the
and operate at higher pressures modern systems and minimise downtime and
Operating pressures continue to increase (from 350 unplanned maintenance has to have
bars to 500 bars)
Extremely good antiwear properties
Pump running speeds increased up to 4000 rpm
Very good oxidation and thermal stability
Reservoir sizes continue to shrink
Very good surface properties (air release,
retention time in mobile equipment can be down to
less than 1 minute demulse, foaming and filterability )
2002 – Today Formulation has carried the brand into the 21st century
Bosch Rexroth are a major hydraulic OEM, particularly at the more quality driven end of the market.
Traditional approval listings have relied only on basic DIN/ISO performance data that are becoming increasingly
easy to meet in the industry due to wide availability of good quality packages and base oils
Bosch Rexroth increasingly concerned that this does not adequately protect their equipment in service, so have
developed their own approval process
New performance test, designated RFT-APU-CL (Rexroth Fluid Test – Axial Piston Unit – Closed Loop)
Additional laboratory testing, building on basic DIN/ISO requirements with demanding seal compatibility tests in
particular
Shell Tellus S2 MX is now on the first listing of Bosch Rexroth RDE 90245, and the first major oil company to be
approved
Shell Tellus S2 VX approval will follow late 2016/early 2017

EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE IN SEVERE BOSCH REXROTH TEST
Denison HF-0
Qualified with the T6H20C pump test (a combined vane and piston pump operated under severe cycling
conditions over 600 hours, including 300 hours with a high water content)
Eaton E-FDGN-TB002-E
Quite a mouthful, but is essentially the older Brochure 694 (and even older to I-286-S & M-2950-S) approvals
built around performance in the 35VQ25 vane pump test, now supplemented by additional bench performance
tests, including seal compatibility testing.
Fives Cincinnati P-68/P-69/P-70
Based around the long-standing thermal stability test at the heart of these approvals, but as this is only granted to
fluids also approved by Eaton, it also reflects the more severe Eaton requirements.
“Routine” requirements, similar to or more relaxed than “Severe” requirements, more demanding than DIN/ISO/ASTM
DIN/ISO/ASTM
• Air release
• Basic viscometric properties • Oxidation sludge and corrosion (1000 hour TOST)
• Foam control and water separation • Hydrolytic stability

• Rust protection • Performance in T6H20C hybrid pump

Note: The T6H20C piston weight loss requirement has not been removed from the China GB specification, but use of the T6H20C test for this specification is neither supported nor
approved by Parker Denison. However, passing data have been demonstrated by both Tellus S2 MX and Tellus S2 VX.

• Optional test for JCMAS listing, but required by many Japanese OEMs

circulating (so essentially an oxidation/Cu compatibility test rather than a normal pump test)

BENEFIT FROM ANTI-RUST PROPERTIES
The ability to protect components from rust is a basic property for any hydraulic fluid.
Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX help to protect your equipment against rust*
Benefit: less debris in the system minimizes corrosive wear reduced maintenance reduced maintenance

A hydraulic fluid has to survive in a hostile environment, and Shell Tellus S2 MX and
Shell Tellus S2 VX have proven their robustness to :
Oxidation
TOST life demonstrated as 5000 hours across all viscosity grades
Sludge deposits in 1000 hour TOST test kept under control
RPVOT life demonstrated as 400 minutes across all viscosity grades
Thermal degradation

Stick-Slip is the spontaneous jerking motion that can occur while two objects are sliding over each other
Generally a nasty noise - squeaking sound - accompanies stick-slip motion
Stick slip happens at hydraulic cylinders and sliding bearings at very low speeds under heavy load
Very dependent on surface material and roughness as well as the physical and chemical properties of the hydraulic
fluid
Shell Tellus S2 M and Shell Tellus S2 V generally perform well for friction control, but some more extreme
applications are starting to see problems (particularly for Shell Tellus S2 V 32, which has a slightly different additive
system to the rest of the family)
Both Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX provide improvements in stick-slip control, without turning them into
detergent oils or ATFs, which have their own performance compromises for use as hydraulic fluids

AIR RELEASE ISO 9120
Method Name Description
ISO 9120 Air release Compressed air at 200 mbar is blown through 180ml of the test oil at 50oC for 7
minutes to thoroughly aerate the sample.
Required by
most of the major standards After air-blowing, the density of the test oil is measured continuously by means of
an immersed bobbin connected to a precision balance.
The quoted air release time is the time taken for the density of the test oil to return
to its pre-test value, less a standard correction for 0.2%v/v dissolved air. Criteria
varies by viscosity and also by standard body.
Note: Although use of Gp II base oils gives a directional improvement in air release
relative to Gp I, they are still prone to contamination so the guaranteed Brand
Standard is the same for Shell Tellus S2 MX/VX as for Shell Tellus S2 M/V, and
markets currently using Gp II will see no change in this property.
By contrast, current Shell Tellus S4 ME and future Shell Tellus S3 VX have very fast
air release times, and this is a major feature and benefit for these fluids.

• Current Shell Tellus S2 M and Shell Tellus S2 V are based on a Gp I offering, and until recently all Gp II blends of Shell Tellus
S2 M were dyed to match local Gp I to ensure supply chain flexibility between multiple base oils.
• Gp I base oils vary significantly in colour between various production sites (including within Shell), so legacy market colour
has been very variable globally, even if local consistency has been maintained.
• Gp II base oils are naturally near water-white, so the product takes only a very slight colour from the relatively small
additive concentration.
• Dying all global Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX production is neither necessary (it is sold against a globally
consistent Gp II supply position) nor feasible due to the difficulties in handling large quantities of dye in supply chain.
• France and Germany have been supplying undyed Gp II Shell Tellus S2 M for several months. No market issues, providing
proper customer communication is followed with advance notice to sensitive customers.
• We are aware that at least one international competitor supplies dyed versions of its main Gp II hydraulics range to special
order. Shell are not prepared to do this, or recommend a suitable dye, which carries liability for use. Users may of course
dye the product themselves with advice from a local dye supplier.
• Visibility issues in sight glasses etc. can be relieved with coloured backgrounds, torches, or other techniques,

Modern equipment requires much more stringent seal compatibility than the basic nitrile testing of
yesteryear. Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX meet and exceed today’s more demanding seal
