WHY DO WE NEED NEW PRODUCTS?

Current Tellus S2 M was developed in the late 1990s and launched in 2002 (Tellus S2 V in 2004)
Since then, it has been an extremely successful product for Shell Lubricants, but is now showing its age
14 years of activity have been focused on supply chain flexibility (multiple packages and base oils), not
improving performance
The growing availability of Gp II base oils and market general packages from the main suppliers create a low
entry barrier to competitor products with good paper credentials
Sales and support staff do not get sufficient time with the customer to develop the story of Shell Tellus proven field
performance
Demand for global consistency has constrained us to the original Gp I Brand Standard
Resulting in falling volumes in many markets, and creating the need for product refreshment

NEW FLAGSHIP SPECIFICATION

Bosch Rexroth are a major hydraulic OEM, particularly at the more quality driven end of the market.
Traditional approval listings have relied only on basic DIN/ISO performance data that are becoming increasingly
easy to meet in the industry due to wide availability of good quality packages and base oils
Bosch Rexroth increasingly concerned that this does not adequately protect their equipment in service, so have
developed their own approval process
New performance test, designated RFT-APU-CL (Rexroth Fluid Test – Axial Piston Unit – Closed Loop)
Additional laboratory testing, building on basic DIN/ISO requirements with demanding seal compatibility tests in
particular
Shell Tellus S2 MX is now on the first listing of Bosch Rexroth RDE 90245, and the first major oil company to be
approved
Shell Tellus S2 VX approval will follow late 2016/early 2017

Eaton 35VQ25

TELLUS S2 MX

Copyright of Shell International Shell Tellus S2 MX/VX Technical Pack RESTRICTED 17

NEW BOSCH REXROTH INCREASES OIL STRESS
BY FACTOR 13
Oil Stress in a pump is directly related to the amount of energy going into the oil from the pump
Energy = Ppump * ∆T , where Ppump is the power from the pump: Ppump = Q * ∆P
Q is the output flow rate of the pump (in m3/s), ∆P is the pressure drop across the pump (in Pa) and ∆T is the duration of operation (seconds)
Pump flow rate Q is given by: Q = ω * D, where ω is the rotational speed of the pump (in radians/second, which will be proportional to the rpm),
and D is the amount of fluid displaced per revolution (m3)
Ppump = Q * ∆ P = ω * D * ∆ P
Therefore to compare stresses on two different pumps operating under different conditions we have

Oil Stress 1 ω ΔP ΔT
. .
Oil Stress 2 ω ΔP ΔT
If we compare the Oil Stress of a typical legacy pump test (Oil Stress Legacy) with the Bosch Rexroth test (Oil Stress BR) we find a factor of 13

Oil Stress BR 4000 rpm 480 bars 500 hours

. .
Oil Stress Legacy 2400 rpm 207 bars 147 hours

Quite a mouthful, but is essentially the older Brochure 694 (and even older to I-286-S & M-2950-S) approvals
built around performance in the 35VQ25 vane pump test, now supplemented by additional bench performance
tests, including seal compatibility testing.
Fives Cincinnati P-68/P-69/P-70
Based around the long-standing thermal stability test at the heart of these approvals, but as this is only granted to
fluids also approved by Eaton, it also reflects the more severe Eaton requirements.

PARKER DENISON T6H20C PUMP TEST
• Demanding “on/off” cyclic conditions, with the piston and vane pumps alternating the load every 2 seconds for over 600
hours
• Dry phase (307 Hrs) :
• 250 / 280 bar (vane/piston pumps)
• 110°C
• 2000 rpm
• Wet phase (301 Hrs) :
• 1%v/v water added to simulate gross contamination
• Temperature reduced to 80°C
• Originally designed to be rated visually and by measurement of weight loss in both piston and vane pumps. Piston
requirement removed from HF-0 more recently due to variable hardware quality.

Note: The T6H20C piston weight loss requirement has not been removed from the China GB specification, but use of the T6H20C test for this specification is neither supported nor
approved by Parker Denison. However, passing data have been demonstrated by both Tellus S2 MX and Tellus S2 VX.

FZG LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY TEST (ISO 14635-1)
This test is required not only by DIN 51524 but also OEMs
like Bosch Rexroth, Eaton, Parker Denison
This test measures the ‘scuffing’ load-carrying capacity of
gears at 140 rpm for 15 minutes at successively increasing
load stages
The test gears are examined initially and after
each load stage for cumulative damage or ‘scuffing’ to the
gear tooth flanks
The FZG test determines the load-carrying capacity of the oil,
and measures the level of protection given to gear teeth by the
lubricant
Increased FZG performance to ensure excellent protection today
and future robustness

COMPARISON WITH OTHER SHELL PRODUCTS
Shell Tellus S2 M and Shell Tellus S2 V have historically benefited from exceptionally low TOST sludge, and this has been a
useful parameter for presenting the products to customers and OEMs.
It has not been possible to maintain this exceptional performance for Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX, but this is not
expected to have a major impact on field performance.
• Most legacy Shell Tellus S2 M/V data were generated in good quality Shell Gp I base oils, but relatively little Shell Tellus S2
M is now blended in Shell Gp I due to plant closures and the increasing use of Gp II and third party Gp I oils. Legacy data
do not therefore necessarily reflect the product in the market today.
• Moving from Gp I to Gp II would give a directional increase in sludge on an equivalent chemistry basis, even with no other
change.
• The higher zinc levels and more active anti-wear chemistries required to give Bosch Rexroth approval and the lift in FZG
performance generally come with a trade off against exceptional sludge control. No other product in our portfolio or from a
competitor has demonstrated both of these performance attributes in our testing.
• Existing higher tier Shell products such as Shell Tellus S3 V and Shell Tellus S4 ME also show higher sludge values than
legacy Shell Tellus S2 M/V, but perform well in the field.

ROTATING PRESSURE VESSEL OXIDATION TEST (RPVOT), ASTM D2272
RVPOT intends to mimic the oil behaviour at peak temperatures
Oil is subjected to oxidation at 150°C in the presence of:
Oxygen at 6.5 bar
Copper
Water
As its name indicates, the above mixture is agitated in a sealed
vessel by rotation; 100 rpm at an angle of 30° from the horizontal.
Pressure drop is measured against time
This severe test evaluates oil life when exposed to high
temperatures when contaminated with water in the presence of a catalytic (Cu)
metal.
The test result indicates expected oil life at running conditions.
The better the outcome of the test the higher the oil life expectancy in the field

DESCRIPTION OF STICK SLIP AND FRICTION CONTROL

Stick-Slip is the spontaneous jerking motion that can occur while two objects are sliding over each other
Generally a nasty noise - squeaking sound - accompanies stick-slip motion
Stick slip happens at hydraulic cylinders and sliding bearings at very low speeds under heavy load
Very dependent on surface material and roughness as well as the physical and chemical properties of the hydraulic
fluid
Shell Tellus S2 M and Shell Tellus S2 V generally perform well for friction control, but some more extreme
applications are starting to see problems (particularly for Shell Tellus S2 V 32, which has a slightly different additive
system to the rest of the family)
Both Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX provide improvements in stick-slip control, without turning them into
detergent oils or ATFs, which have their own performance compromises for use as hydraulic fluids

AIR RELEASE ISO 9120
Method Name Description

ISO 9120 Air release Compressed air at 200 mbar is blown through 180ml of the test oil at 50oC for 7
minutes to thoroughly aerate the sample.
Required by
most of the major standards After air-blowing, the density of the test oil is measured continuously by means of
an immersed bobbin connected to a precision balance.

The quoted air release time is the time taken for the density of the test oil to return
to its pre-test value, less a standard correction for 0.2%v/v dissolved air. Criteria
varies by viscosity and also by standard body.

Note: Although use of Gp II base oils gives a directional improvement in air release
relative to Gp I, they are still prone to contamination so the guaranteed Brand
Standard is the same for Shell Tellus S2 MX/VX as for Shell Tellus S2 M/V, and
markets currently using Gp II will see no change in this property.
By contrast, current Shell Tellus S4 ME and future Shell Tellus S3 VX have very fast
air release times, and this is a major feature and benefit for these fluids.

PRODUCT APPEARANCE
5
Copyright of Shell International Shell Tellus S2 MX/VX Technical Pack RESTRICTED 69
SHELL TELLUS S2 MX & VX WILL BE VERY LIGHT COLOURED

• Current Shell Tellus S2 M and Shell Tellus S2 V are based on a Gp I offering, and until recently all Gp II blends of Shell Tellus
S2 M were dyed to match local Gp I to ensure supply chain flexibility between multiple base oils.
• Gp I base oils vary significantly in colour between various production sites (including within Shell), so legacy market colour
has been very variable globally, even if local consistency has been maintained.
• Gp II base oils are naturally near water-white, so the product takes only a very slight colour from the relatively small
additive concentration.
• Dying all global Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX production is neither necessary (it is sold against a globally
consistent Gp II supply position) nor feasible due to the difficulties in handling large quantities of dye in supply chain.
• France and Germany have been supplying undyed Gp II Shell Tellus S2 M for several months. No market issues, providing
proper customer communication is followed with advance notice to sensitive customers.
• We are aware that at least one international competitor supplies dyed versions of its main Gp II hydraulics range to special
order. Shell are not prepared to do this, or recommend a suitable dye, which carries liability for use. Users may of course
dye the product themselves with advice from a local dye supplier.
• Visibility issues in sight glasses etc. can be relieved with coloured backgrounds, torches, or other techniques,
