Two-Stage Gear Train Design Assignment

The document outlines Assignment 2 for the HMECH 315 Machine Design course. Students are tasked with designing a two-stage gear train to meet specifications provided in Table 1. The assignment requires drawing a labeled sketch of the gear reduction system, explaining the design process considering dependencies between parts, and performing analyses related to power/torque requirements, gear specification, shaft layout, forces, materials selection, stresses, deflections, and bearings. The final design must satisfy the specifications, including delivering 20 hp to an output speed of 82-88 rpm from an input of 1750 rpm.

As a Design Engineer you have been assigned to design a two-stage gear train. The design
specifications needed for this design are given in Table 1.
a. Draw a neat and clearly labeled sketch of the two-stage gear reduction system showing the
gears, intermediate shafts, input and output shaft, the gearbox casing, all bearings. [7]
b. Following the sequence outlined below, explain in detail the design of the gear reduction
system to satisfy the design specifications. Consider the dependencies between the parts.
Include formulae and numerical evaluations.
i. Power and torque requirements. [3]
ii. Gear specification. [4]
iii. Shaft layout. [2]
iv. Force analysis. [3]
v. Shaft material selection. [3]
vi. Shaft design for stress (fatigue and static). [5]
vii. Shaft design for deflection. [5]
viii. Bearing selection. [5]
ix. Key and retaining ring selection. [2]
x. Final analysis. [1]
