CB/EC CMOS Memory Battery Backup Specifications
Background A Ni-Cd (Nickel Cadmium) rechargeable battery equivalent in size to a a 9
volt battery is used to backup the memory in the CMOS board during a
power loss. This battery is mounted in a clip located on the right side of the
card file. A cable connects the battery to the CMOS board.
Ni-Cd batteries of this type are available in two voltages. They are built with
both six and seven cells. A single Ni-Cd cell is 1.2 volts. This results in the
batteries being either 7.2, 8.4 or 9.6 volts. This is its nominal voltage, but
charging can result in a higher surface charge being present. The CMOS
board is designed to work with either voltage.
When the UCPU is used the external battery is no longer required. The
CMOS functionally is in a special RAM chip contained on the UCPU and it
has a built-in battery with a backup capability of 10 years in the power off
state.
Action Any battery used must have a capacity of at least 65 mAh. This rating is at
25° C @ 65mA. load. A battery with full capacity should maintain the
memory of a Basic Controller for 2 hours and the memory of an Extended
Controller for 1 hour. Honeywell recommends that the battery be tested or
replaced once a year.
Battery Testing The following test is used to check the condition of the 7.2 volt battery.
Batteries are normally shipped in a discharged condition. If open circuit
voltage is ≥6 volts then the battery is acceptable. If the open circuit voltage
is <6 volts the following test should be made.
1. Apply a 260mA charge for 30 seconds.
2. Apply a 260mA discharge for 2 to 3 seconds.
3. Measure the end of discharge voltage. If the voltage is <6 volts
the battery is defective. If the voltage is ≥6 volts then perform
steps 4 through 7.

5. Apply a 7mA charge for 2 minutes. Voltage will rise to more than
7.2 volts.
6. Allow the battery to sit open circuited for 90 minutes.
7. Measure the open circuit voltage. If it is ≥3.0 volts, the battery is
acceptable. If it is <3.0 volts, the battery is defective.
