1. The lack of it causes violence.

A. School shootings.
B. Assault
C. Hate crimes
D. Massacres
2. Balance of Rights
3. National and Domestic Security
Border
Gun trafficking
4. Gun laws today don’t work.
A. Online Gun sales
B. Gun Law Loopholes
C. Prices
D. Little to no restrictions

In the United States, guns are everywhere, and very easy to buy. Guns are
available in convenience stores. Guns are available online. You can find them in
retail stores and even 3-D print one and make your own. They’re also very
cheap, up to a hundred dollars, and no more. Some states don’t even require a
permit or a license to carry a gun, concealed or unconcealed. There is no waiting
period in some states nor are there any registrations.

Yet, there's a 500 percent increase in the likelihood of homicide if a gun is available during a
domestic abuse situation. Predictably, the "boyfriend loophole" has deadly costs. Roughly every
16 hours, a woman is shot and killed by a current or former intimate partner. In 2018 alone,
there were 653 gun-related domestic violence fatalities in the United States.” Women in the U.S.
are 21 times more likely to be killed by guns than women in other high-income countries.

In a domestic violence case, studies found that there is 500 percent increase that a chance of a
murder happening in a domestic violence case if a firearm is obtainable. That is unfortunately
the case in this country. In fact, it is 21 times more likely for an American woman to be shot and
killed in a firearm-related incident than many other women in other developed countries.
Another study found that in the course of sixteen hours, a woman is shot and killed by a bygone
or current partner. In the year 2018, at least 653 domestic violence casualties were inflicted by
the use of a gun in America.

Secondly, gun control can guarantee domestic and national security.

Approximately every sixteen hours, a woman is killed in a firearm-related
incident. Shootings and murders are so commonplace in this country, that the
majority of them aren’t even mentioned on the news. Not to mention, there is also
a high rate of illegal gun trafficking. Guns are sold on the black market into the
hands of criminals or would-be criminals. There have even been many instances
where firearms are smuggled across the border, into other countries like Mexico,
where they are used in the perpetration of homicides, suicides, robberies, and
more. A lot of this traces back to lack of gun regulation in the United States. It’s
not fair that people in this country and out have to suffer because of it.

Guns are even sold illegally across the border through the black market. Guns are so easy to
buy in the United States, more so than in other countries, that thousands of criminals and
would-be criminals buy guns here. Then, they head back to their country of origin, perhaps
Mexico, and cause violence there.

● 56,130 hate crimes were committed in the United States that involved the use of
a gun from 2010 to 2016.*
● In 2019 there were 22 reported homicides of transgender or gender
nonconforming people. 91% of those victims were Black women.
● 23.8% of transgender students report being threatened or injured with a
weapon at school.
● Anti-Jewish hate crimes rose by more than 37% between 2016 and 2017.
● Hate crimes against Latinx people increased by 21% in 2018
● In 2018, of 4,954 reported race/ethnicity/ancestry hate crimes, 46.9 percent
were motivated by anti-Black or African American bias.

Between the years 2010 and 2016, almost 60,000 hate crimes were perpetrated with a firearm. From the years 2016
and 2017, anti-semitism had an uptick and racially-biased attacks against Jews went up by 37%. A year later, there
was a 21% percent increase in attacks against Latinx people. That same year, a study found that in approximately
5,000 reported hate crimes, almost 50 percent was influenced by anti-Black sentiment. Almost all of these attacks
were perpetrated with a gun.
First, the second amendment states that, “A well regulated Militia, being
necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear
Arms, shall not be infringed.” In reality, for years, that was interpreted as states’
rights to keep militias, and any service members to keep and bear arms of their
own. The original, intended interpretation of the second amendment, as you can
see, was very different from what we have now. In addition, most gun control
policies these days don’t even take away guns from law-abiding gun owners.

One of the reasons why gun control is such a highly contested issue is
because of the second amendment. Today, it is interpreted as an individual right
to bear arms. But it actually states that,“A well regulated Militia, being necessary
to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms,
shall not be infringed.”

In comparison to most developed countries in the world, Americans are 25 times

more likely to get killed in a gun-related incident. For instance, Missouri got rid of
its gun licensing law a while back, and gun suicides went up by 24%, and
homicides by 47%. And after the 1994 assault weapons ban became invalid and
expired in 2004, shootings increased by 183% and firearm deaths by 239%.

Additionally, in 1994, the federal government instituted a ban on

assault weapons. A study found that gun massacres went down by
37%, while gun casualties went down by 43%.Not too long ago, the state of
Connecticut passed a law that requires people to have a license before buying a
gun. Firearm suicides and murders decreased by 33% and 28%
respectively.Another study found that waiting periods for a firearm purchase can
decrease the chance of a gun homicide by 17%.

When the Israel Defense Forces stopped letting troops bring weapons
home on the weekends, suicide rates dropped by 40%, one study
found.

After at 1996 mass shooting left 35 people dead in Australia, the

country said "enough."
Leaders swiftly enacted gun-control legislation and set up a program
for citizens to sell their weapons back to the government so they could
be destroyed.

The initiative seems to have been successful: firearm suicides dropped

by 65% and homicides by 59% over the next 10 years.

While Australia had seen 13 mass shootings — defined as five or more

deaths — in the 18 years before the 1996 massacre, there has only been
one in the 22 years since. (Business Insider)

Another reason why gun control is needed is because it actually works. In 1994,
the federal government instituted a ban on assault weapons. There was a study
that found that gun massacres went down by 37%, while gun fatalities went down
by 43%. Additionally, a while back, the state of Connecticut passed a law that
requires people to have a license before buying a gun. Firearm suicides and
murders decreased by 33% and 28% respectively. Another study found that
waiting periods for a firearm purchase can decrease the chance of a gun
homicide by 17%.

One of the reasons why gun control is such a highly contested issue is
because of the second amendment. Today, it is interpreted as an individual right
to bear arms. But it actually states that,“A well regulated Militia, being necessary
to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms,
shall not be infringed.” For years, that was actually understood to be the right of
people who have a connection with a militia to bear arms, as well as states to
have their own troops. But nowadays, it is considered to be an individual right to
bear arms.
