Written Assignment Unit 4

Written Assignment Unit 4

To complete the missing probability, we need to ensure that the sum of all probabilities (P(x))
equals 1, as probabilities should always add up to 1 in a probability distribution.

Given the provided probabilities:

x P(x)
0 0.12
1 0.18
2 0.30
3 0.15
4 ?
5 0.10
6 0.05

We need to find the missing probability for x = 4:

To make the sum of probabilities equal to 1, we can form the following equation:

0.12 + 0.18 + 0.30 + 0.15 + ? + 0.10 + 0.05 = 1

Now, let's solve for the missing probability:

0.12 + 0.18 + 0.30 + 0.15 + ? + 0.10 + 0.05 = 1

0.90 + ? = 1

Now, subtract 0.90 from both sides of the equation to find the missing probability:

? = 1 - 0.90 ?

? = 0.10

So, the missing probability for x = 4 is 0.10.

Now, let's calculate the expected value and standard deviation:

Written Assignment Unit 4

Expected Value (Mean): The expected value (mean) is calculated as the sum of each value
multiplied by its probability:

Expected Value (μ) = Σ [x * P(x)]

Expected Value (μ) = (0 * 0.12) + (1 * 0.18) + (2 * 0.30) + (3 * 0.15) + (4 * 0.10) + (5 * 0.10) + (6 *

0.05)

Expected Value (μ) = 0 + 0.18 + 0.60 + 0.45 + 0.40 + 0.50 + 0.30

Expected Value (μ) = 2.43

Therefore, the expected value (mean) from the table is 2.43.

Standard Deviation (σ):

The standard deviation is calculated as the square root of the variance.

The variance is calculated as the sum of the squared differences between each value and the
mean, each multiplied by its probability:

Variance (σ^2) = Σ [(x - μ)^2 * P(x)]

Variance (σ^2) = [(0 - 2.43)^2 * 0.12] + [(1 - 2.43)^2 * 0.18] + [(2 - 2.43)^2 * 0.30] + [(3 - 2.43)^2
* 0.15] + [(4 - 2.43)^2 * 0.10] + [(5 - 2.43)^2 * 0.10] + [(6 - 2.43)^2 * 0.05]

Variance (σ^2) ≈ 3.1317

Now, we shall calculate the standard deviation by taking the square root of the variance:

Standard Deviation (σ) ≈ √3.1317 ≈ 1.77 (rounded to two decimal places)

So, the standard deviation from the table is approximately 1.77.
