Strain Analysis of Deformed Rectangular Element

The document provides an expert solution to a mechanics of deformable bodies problem involving finding the strain in x and y directions (Ex and Ey) and the shear strain (γ) for a originally rectangular element that was deformed into a new shape. The solution calculates Ex as 0.004, Ey as 0.01, and γ as 0.28185 rad using equations that relate the original and deformed element dimensions and angles.

Question

Mechanics of Deformable Bodies problem:

Transcribed Image Text: 2. An initially rectangular element of a material is deformed into the shape as shown in figure 2, Find Ex. Ey. and y for the
element. Deformed L'ndetiormed 0.1992 mm Figure 2 015 H

Expert Solution

 Given

Consider the free body diagram of the given rectangular element and its deformed shape as shown below.

x=0.2 mm

x1=0.1992 mm

y=0.15 mm

y1=0.1515 mm

θ = 15.7° = 0.2740 rad

ϕ = 16.6° = 0.2897 rad
 Step 1

Strain in x-direction is given by,

εx = δxx
= 0.2−0.1992
0.2
εx =0.004
Therefore, strain in x-direction is 0.004.

 Step 2

Strain in y-direction is given by,

εy = δyy
= 0.1515−0.15
0.15
εy =0.01
Therefore, strain in y-direction is 0.01.

 Step 3

Shear strain is given by,

γ = θ+ϕ2
= 0.2740+0.2897
2
γ =0.28185 rad
Therefore, shear strain is 0.28185 rad.
