REMINDER OF POLITICAL SIGN RULES

The Jefferson County Board of Elections reminds all residents that vandalizing or stealing a political campaign
sign is against the law.

Citizens can face charges ranging from trespass to petit larceny to criminal mischief, which are misdemeanors
that carry penalties of fines and imprisonment. If you have evidence of a sign being tampered with, please
call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at (315) 786-2700, the city Police Department at (315) 782-2233 or
the New York State Police at (315) 366-6000.

Every qualified candidate and political party is entitled to full and equal participation in the electoral process.
As such, no person, party or committee shall engage in or commit to any of the following:

● Political espionage, including theft of campaign materials or assets

● Undermining the electoral process, including preparing or distributing fraudulent writings or
using allies who falsely represent themselves as supporters of a particular candidate
● Deliberate misrepresentation of any poll results or failing to disclose information related to a
poll disclosed by a candidate, political party or committee.
● Any acts intended to hinder or prevent any eligible person from registering or voting.

Any complaints involving a possible Fair Campaign Code violation should be reported to the New York State
Board of Elections’ Office of Counsel at (518) 474-6367.

The New York State Department of Transportation has policies regarding the placement of signs on state
highways:

● Signs are not to be placed on the right-of-way of any controlled-access or expressway-type road
● Signs should not cause a sight-distance problem or interfere with safe traffic movement
● Signs should not present any problems for workers maintaining the roadside, such as mowing.

Placing signs on telephone or power poles is also discouraged. Please consult your municipality’s local code
enforcement or zoning officer for city, town or village-specific sign regulations.
