Ovariohysterectomy Surgical Procedure Details

A 7 cm incision was made to perform an ovariohysterectomy on a dog. The procedure took 60 minutes and found normal anatomy. The ovaries and uterus were removed using LigaSure cautery and sutures with no complications observed. The incision was closed in layers and estimated blood loss was 10 ml.

Surgical Procedure: Duration: Major Operative Findings:

Ovariohysterectomy 60 min 1. Normal anatomy

Description of Surgical Procedure Including Complications

A clip and chlorhexidine prep of the surgical field was performed.

A 7 cm ventral midline incision was made in middle third between the umbilicus and pubis. The
abdomen was entered via a tented stab incision in the linea alba. The right ovary was identified, the
suspensory ligament torn and LigaSure cautery was used to transect the ovary and uterine horn from
the broad ligament. The left ovary and uterine horn were mobilized using the same technique. A
single modified millers knot ligature using 2-0 PDS was placed around the uterine body above the
cervix. The uterus was severed using a #10 scalpel blade distal to the ligature. No hemorrhage
observed from the uterine stump.

The abdomen was inspected and hemostasis confirmed.

Sponge count was even

Sharps count was even

The m. rectus abdominis fascia was sutured in a simple continuous pattern with 2-0 PDS. The
subcutaneous layer was closed in a simple continuous pattern with 2-0 PDS. The dermis was closed
with 2-0 monocryl in an intradermal pattern and final knot buried.

Estimated blood loss: 10 ml.
