J.B. Priestley uses various dramatic techniques in An Inspector Calls to engage the audience and convey his message. These include dramatic irony by revealing events the characters don't know about, lighting and sound effects to set the mood, cliffhangers at the end of acts to leave the audience wanting more, and the use of a photograph and the inspector's questioning to reveal clues about the girl's story. Contrasts are also used between the characters' beliefs. The timing of entrances and exits builds tension. Through these techniques, Priestley is able to highlight social issues and keep the audience questioning what will happen next throughout the play.

How does J.B. priestley make use of structure form and
language to repeat
Pink : acts , audience , dramatic
Yellow : dramatic devices
Green : language analysis
"An inspector '' calls is a play written by J R priestly, first performed in 1945 the
play takes place on 5 April 1912. Dramatic irony is one of the strongest dramatic
effects is one of the dramatic tools that attracts the attention of the audience in act
1. Priestly uses dramatic irony to make Mr.birling Look irresponsible and silly as
he's wrong about war and the titanic. "And I say there isn't a chance of war...and
the titanic...". The audience distrust he gives wrong speculations about history,
capitalist period of history of views also be not correct. An addittion The play set
back in 1912 bit is shaped before hand much layer in 1946. The dramatic irony
make the audience intrest and want to know what happens. As well as Mr.Birling
is overconfident when he tells Gerald that he is excepting knighthood and his
throwaway comment about getting in trouble. The audience except something bad
happen " so long as we behave ourselves. Don't get into the police. court or start a
scandal this noun "Scandal" the dramatists used it to show the audience that the
world war 2 has ended. This play was very important as Priestly was a spherical
and wanted every one to treat equally.

Furthermore Another dramatic device Priestley used is lighting and sound

affect are things that create the whole atmosphere in Act 1. This dramatic effects are
done very effectively and smoothly by the dramatist , J.B priestly. It is very
important to attract and maintain the attention of the audience and arouse questions
in their minds , which is done through creating tension , drama and suspense through
some dramartic techniques . the doorbell in act 1 is very important as it brings
inspector goole on stage. Birling ls speech he gives to Eric and Gerald on his
personal. This force the audience to connection between the birling ls and the
inspector arrival capitalist the promotes and believes that community "non sense
Mr.birling says at once before the doorbell rings the titanic"unsinkable, absolutely
unsinkable ' "Unsinkable" particular repetition of unsinkable.particular add this
adjective which attract the audience feeling lexical and smartness than Mr.birling.
Lighting at the beginning of the play the lighting be "pink ' and "intimate". The
colour "Intimate" makes the audience relax when the inspector goole
arrives. When the inspector enters the house the lighting becomes "brighter " and
"harsher " "Brighter and harsher" he uses comparative Brighter and harsher to
show the audience powerful of the lights. In comparson the light pink and
intimate. The audience surprised when the lighting came Brighter. Inspector arrives
for the first time in the perfect time just after Mr. Birling's speech about social "man has
to mind his own business and look after himself and his own " . This forces the audience
to make a link between Mr.Birling Is capitalist and start to ask themselves

Otherwise there is another dramatic tools priestly used is cliffhanger in act 1

. . Act 1 ends with the inspector says "well" to Gerald . This adverb "Well" the
dramatist used it to make the audience are desperate to know the answer. Sheila
laughs nather hysterically "why_you fool_he knows of course he knows and I hate
to think how much he knows that don't yet. You'll see . You'll see . This noun ''Fool''
The dramatists use it to make the audience wait to find what happenes. The audience
would be struck by the dramatic change. The door slowly opens and the inspector
appear looking steadily and search at them ''He lokks crushed''. The dramatist use
''crushed'' as an adjective to give the audience them adds to the tension.

Along with the Another dramatic device Priestly used is photograph we're
very important dramatic devices . The inspector shows the photo of Eva to one person
at a time, means that no one character can be ever be sure that they have seen the
same photo. This adds to the sense of condition which figure out the girl and the
inspector "she was very pretty girl too...and that didn't make it any better. The
dramtists use '' pretty'' as an adjective to show how eva was very beautiful girl. The
inspector reveals that Eva changed her name to Daisy Renton. Gerald reaction makes
it impure and he know that Eva fired from her next job as a shop assistant because
Sheila thought Eva laughed at her.
Along with contracts is the dramatic tools that attracts the attention of the
audience in act 1."But these girl aren't cheap labour-theyl re people.priestly used
''labour'' as a noun to forces the audience to make between Sheila and the dead girl
to highlight the differences in their lives of their social classes.Priestly opposite the
beliefs of Birling with the attitude of the inspector goole. The audience is through
their happiness to accept theory. The start of this play Priestly uses the stage
direction and settings. Priestly show the differentiation between the senate
conjoined Birling family in their "substantial and heavily comfortable, dinning
room.

Besides Another dramatic device that Priestly used is dramatic irony in the
end of act 2 . Mr.birling is trapped at the end of the sense when she forceful "blamed
some drunken young ilder". Priestly use "drunken" as an adjective to make the
audience realize that she is describe Eric .Mrs.birling was censure Eva for not
making better decisions for herself. Her denial to get assistance from the father of
her child was Mrs.birling vindication for refusing her charity. Eric's entrance this
can be seen when Mr.birling blame the man who made Eva pregnant while not even
concerned that man could possibly be her son. Priestly make this the ending of Act
2.
Into the bargain Another dramatic tools Priestly used is the timing of
entrances , exists and closing of the curtains are very cruicial and reflects the idea of
the character in Act 2. The most important one is the Inspector goolels entrance which
creats attention and atmosphere. The inspector arrives while the Birling family is
celebrating the engagement of Gerald and Sheila in the dinning room. The stage
direction that the lighting should be "pink "and "intimate "when the inspector arrive.
The inspector introduce each family member. Eric's entrance at the end of the act the
audience and the character on stage realise that Eric is the father of Eva's baby.
Mr.Birling's entrance which impact the inspector is having and insists on try to
control herself events.

As well Another dramatic tools Priestly used is contrasts in act 2. The

audience are forced to make contrasts between Mr.birling and the beliefs of the
inspector. Mrs.Birling blaming the father of the child "and look for the father of the
child''. The inspector especially clear in this scene that Priestley is using. The
inspector move to the plot along to decide the character are questioned. The
inspector "that doesn't make it any the less yours. She came to you for help, at a
time when no women could have needed it more"

finally in act 3 The inspector makes Dramatic speech about the

consequences of social irresponsibility that Mr.birling was preaching at the end
of the dinner. Priestly used it to get his message across to the audience. Sheila
and Eric felt a great regret until the final phone call comes and Mr. Birling is told
a girl has just died and an inspector is on his way to their house which makes
everybody shocked and then the curtains fall. Telephone calls and pauses are
techniques that adds tension and drama to the play. It slows down the pace,
arouses wuestions and keeps the audience interested and waiting to find out
what's to happen next. The final conclusion Is a shocking surprise to character on
the stage and audience "a twist in the tale". The dramatist use '' twist '' as an verb
to make the audience surprised and shocked .

And sound affects again in act 3 like when the telephone ringing
heralds the information. Gerald enters which shows how the effect of timing was
a very an important dramatic devices Gerald brought with him the news that
there is no inspector Goole which leaves the audience in shook , Mr. Birling was
so happy and he took it as a joke.

How does Jane Austen represent the theme of love and

marriage in "pride and prejudice"
"Pride and prejudice" was written by Jane Austen in 1813. She used five relationship
to represent the theme of love and marriage.
Context of "Pride and prejudice" has a great effect on character's action. In volume I
chapter 1, the novel opening with sentence "it's a truth universally acknowledged, that
a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of wife'' this sentence
shows view on marriage in austen's time and also shows the readers the reversal of
people at this time.In the first line of the novel, Austen reveals two of it's primary
themes marriage and clases . One of the main themes in ''Pride and prejudice'' is the
theme of marriage, Marriage was very important in the nineteenth century. ''must'' the
author use this word to reduce how decisive was or people.

The first relationship written by Jane Austen that is present the theme of
love and marriage was the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Mr. and Mrs.bennet they
doesn’t have the best relationships because of two different prersonalties. Mr.bennett
is obviously unhappy with his wife mind and personalty and that is simply because
''Mr. and Mrs.bennett are not well matched. Her silliness does not mix well'' which is
something Mr.bennett seems to understand. The author use this noun ''silliness'' to
focus about expectation of women and marrage in the late of Eighteenth century. At
the beginning of their marriage, so austen wanted to put an example for the readers in
volume II chapter 19 that only based on looks which was extremely coomon people in
the 19th century ''captivated by youth and beuty and that appearance of good humor
which youth and beuty generally give''. all that remains of his wife of her Mr.bennett
cannot stand. The author use this adjective ''captivated'' to show hook up with and
fleeting and show that looks can be very misleading. because Mr.bennet never really
loved Mrs.bennett and their marriage was unhappy. Otherwise the theme of love are
described in the 19th century and people got married for there safe not need for love
and Jane austen showed the readers should be unsuccessful marriage.

The relationship of ledyia bennett and George wickham represented the

theme of love and marriage. Lydia was very young and described in volume III
chapter 51 to be ''unbashed , fearless , noisy , untamed''. lydia was to much involved in
gossping at her main aim in her life was finding a husband. Lydia and wickham
relationship forced on marriage and based on naivety. Lydia and wickham marriage in
volume III chapter 50 and they do not really love each other. ''but how liitle of
permanent happiens could belong to a couple only brought together becausie their
passions were stronger than their virtue''. The autor use this adjective ''permanent'' that
marriage without love can have a short term. In volume III, In chapter 49 Mrs.bennet
hated Mr.wickham so much until she knews he was going to marry ledyia. Jane
Austen also wanted the readers to look down on ones and stay away from them
because people at the time doesn't care about happiens but care about only one thing
money.
Also there is another example of theme love and marriage , the
relationship of charlotte lucas and Mr.collins. Mr.collins doesn't care about love and
his happiens because people at that time thought love doesn't necessary at that time.
At the first he loves jane and after jane,Elizabeth and the n he married charlotte at a
very short time. The author reveals why charlotte love Collins in volume I chapter 22.
love Mr.collins so charlotte marries Mr.collins because he has a stable income and
offers her the opportunity to have a home of her own. As charlotte explains to
Elizabeth '' I'm not a romantic you know I never was. I ask only a comfortable home''.
The word ''only'' shows how it is this things she desries and how important marriage is
and women like her at the time. Since charlotte is not particulary beautiful and is
growing older. So she decides to make the most opporteunity , considering Mr.collins
character with connections and situation in life . Mr.collons did not know what love
was in fact and in the novel it almost lookedlike he transperred his feelings toward
Elizabeth's best friend charlotte lucas when he was refused by Elizabeth.

The one of the main couples on the novel jane and bingley and also are
the couples that love each other purely. There is a good natured personalities between
jane and bingley that makes them a prefect couple. There is a true love was in
Elizabeth words In volume I chapter 21 '' No one has ever seen you together can
doubt this affection'' Elizabeth said this because a weaknes of Mr.bingley personality
when he left jane after Mr.darcy told him to do this. The author used '' affection'' to
can be meaning of quite small to represent the theme of love and shows that the
understood even the smallest of motion in a time where the love wasn't standar at that
time. In volume III , Jane Austen represtend the affection deep '' While he was present
jane had no attention to bestow on anyone else'' and this make the readers inderstood
also the word ''bestow'' shows how jane's attention was put on him. how much jane
loves and how will be their marriage happy and beautiful. Happy marriage at that time
in the 19th century are based on love each other.

The main and important relationship that present the theme of love and
marriage in the novel was elizebath bennet and Mr.darcy. Elizabeth bennett and
Mr.darcy shares a differents relationship than most couples.'' Your mistaken, Mr.darcy
if you suppose that the mode of your declaration affected me in any other way, than as
it spared me the concern which I might have felt in refusing you,had you behaved in
more gentlemanlike manner''.when Elizabeth refuses Mr.darcy in volume II chapter 11,
she attacks his pride. Darcy clearly expects a positive response, which reveals his
arrogance. However, elizabeth's claim that darcy's manner is no t ''gentlemanlike'' shows
that she judges him based on his behavior rather than his aristocratic standing . In
volume II, chapter 4 Mr.darcy intended to Elizabeth twice times and he said '' In vain
I have struggled. It will not do.My feelings will not repressed.. You must allow me to
tell you how ardently I admire and love you''. Jane Austen use this word ''in va in'' to
give an idea of when he went through to push back and ignore social diffeences because
social class extremely important in the 19th century.
