B. Establishing a purpose for Activity 2.MARBLE AND PINGPONG BALL
the lesson
Direction
Teacher will show a illustration of one marble and one pingpong
ball. Students ask to identify which of the two objects is heavier.
Students ask to demonstrate to roll the pingpong ball and
marble. Teacher will ask what comes first.
Questions to ask!
1. What did you observe about the activity?
2. Based on the pictures what is our topic today?
C. Presenting examples/ Concept Discussion:
instances of the new lesson What is Momentum?
is a physics term. It can be defined as "mass in motion"
which makes it difficult to stop.
Momentum depends upon the variables mass and
velocity.
Mass
is a measure of the amount of matter in an object.
Velocity
the speed of something in a given direction.
Examples of Momentum
D. Discussing new concepts Activity 3: Interactive Discussion
and practicing new skills no. 1 WHAT IS MOMENTUM?
Equation
Momentum = mass•velocity
P= symbol for the quantity momentum
M= mass in kg
V= velocity in m/s
The equation illustrate that momentum is directly
proportional to both an objects mass and object velocity.
The standard unit for momentum is kg.m/s, and
momentum is always a vector quantity.
Formula for finding momentum
p=m•v
Example
1. Consider a car of mass 1000 kg travelling with a velocity of 8
m/s towards the east. What is the momentum of the car?
Given:
m=1000 kg
v= 8 m/e
Find: p
Solution:
p=m•v
=(1000 kg)(8 m/s)
= 8000 kg.m/s east
E. Discussing new concepts What causes a change in momentum?
and practicing new skills no.2
Changes in momentum happen every time. It occurs
when there is a change of the objects mass and velocity
or both. A fast moving car when suddenly stop because
force is applied to the car for a given duration of time
through brakes. Therefore, the cars velocity is change,
and in turn, the car's momentum is also change.
Example:
1. How fast must a 300 kg car travel to attain a momentum of 45
000 kg.m/s North?
Given:
m= 300 kg
p= 45,000 kg.m/s
Find: velocity (v)
Solution:
v=p/m
=45,000 kg.m/s
300
v= 150 m/s
F. Developing Mastery (Leads Activity 3: Solve me!
to Formative Assessment 3) Instructions
Teacher will prepare a three problems that the students will
going to solve. Students will have a by pair activity and teacher
will choose randomly to present their answer.
Problem Solving
1. A tricycle has a mass of 150 kg. If it is traveling with a velocity
of 10 m/s to the north, what is its momentum?
Given:
mass= 150 kg
velocity= 10 m/s North
Solution:
P= m•v
= (150 kg)(10 m/s north)
= 1, 500 kg.m/s north
2. An 8 kilogram bowling ball is rolling in a straight line toward
you. If its momentum is 16 kg.m/sec, how fast is it traveling?
Given
P= 16 kg.m/sec
m= 8 kg
v= ?
Solution:
v=p/m
= 16 kg. m/sec
8 kg
= 2 m/sec
3. A toy dart gun generates a dart with a momentum of 140
kg.m/s and a velocity of 4 m/s. What is the mass of the dart in
grams?
Given
P= 140 kg.m/s
v= 4 m/s
m=?
Solution
m=p/v
=140 kg.m/s
4 m/s
= 35 kg
G. Finding Practical Questions to ask
applications of concepts and skills 1. What is the importance of momentum in your real life
in daily living situations ?
2. What is the importance of velocity in your life? Since it talks
about the speed and direction.
H. Making generalizations and Momentum is a physics term. It can be defined as "mass in
abstractions about the lesson motion" which makes it difficult to stop.Momentum depends upon
the variables mass and velocity.Equation
momentum=mass•velocity the equation illustrate thatt
momentum is directly proportional to both an objects mass and
object velocity. The standard unit for momentum is kg.m/s, and
momentum is always a vector quantity.
Teacher will ask random questions.
