MAKING REQUEST

1. Definition and Meaning


In daily life we often making request to other people. There are many ways to make
requests to other people. Actually, you can simply ask for help by saying, “Can you help
me?”. Do you already know what is meant by a request? In general, request means asking
for help or asking someone to do something for us. There are various other expressions for
making requests, both in informal and formal contexts, as well as asking for their
willingness in advance. Let's see below!
2. Making Request

When we make a request, there are many sentences that can be used according to the
context. There is an informal one that is usually used for friends, there is also a formal one
for making requests to people who are older than us.
a. Informal

• Can you help me?


• Can I ask a favour?
• Can you…..?
• Can you give me a hand with this?

b. Formal
• Could you help me?
• Could you….?
• Could/May I ask for….?
c. Ask for Willingness : For this context, you have to make sure in advance whether
the person who is asking for help has any objections or not.

• Do you mind….?
• Do you mind if….?
• Would you mind….?
Note:

• For requests that end in mind, use the continue with the gerund
(Verb + ing)
Example : Do you mind printing the paper
• To use if, add subject + verb
Example : Do you if I ask you to check my writing
d. Make a Wish : You can make requests indirectly by using this context

• I’d appreciate it if….


• I’d love it if….
3. Accepting Requests

If above, we have already reviewed how to make a request, now we will discuss the
response, or how to accepting request. We can also use this when we are asked for help by
others.

• Yes!
• Ok!
• Sure!
• Of course!
• No problem!
• I'll help you.
• I'd love that!
• What can I help you with?
4. Declining Requests

The opposite of accepting, when


declining some request by other
people we need to provide excuses, we
also can add sorry to make it more
polite. So we can use the following
expression:

• Sorry, I can't.
• Sorry, but…..
• Sorry, I can't right now.
• Sorry, but I have something else
to do.
• Sorry, I'd love to, but…..
