Introduction to Functions Overview

All functions are relations but not all relations are functions. A function assigns a unique output to each input, while a relation can have multiple outputs for a single input. To determine if a relationship represents a function or relation, the vertical line test can be used - a function will only intersect a vertical line once, while a relation can intersect multiple times. Functions can be used to model real-world situations using their domain, range, and a polynomial or piecewise definition.

Introduction to Functions

All Functions are Relations but not all Relations are Functions

FUNCTION VS RELATION

Function: X should not be repeated, but Y can be repeated

Relation: Both c and y can be repeated

Function: What matters is that the first element (x) is unique

Relation: Both elements (X,Y) can be repeated

Introduction to Functions 1
USE VERTICAL LINE TEST
Function: Only has one point of intersection

Relation: Has two or more points of intersection

If the exponent of y is greater than one then it is a relation

t=5

C(5) = 230(5) - 150
