While this unit study is intended for 1st - 5th grades, some of the exercises
could easily be tailored to include younger children. I have also included ideas to
use with older students on some subjects.
This unit encompasses a variety of daily subjects including Math, Science, Lan-
guage Arts, Social Studies and Visual Arts. In addition to these printables, you
will need a dictionary, world atlas, encyclopedia, construction paper, scissors, glue,
crayons or colored pencils, tissue paper (multiple fall colors), craft or tempera
paint, cranberries and a small tub for water.
Language Arts
1. Read and discuss the History of Thanksgiving (Handout A)
2. After reading, have the students define the vocabulary words and answer the
questions on Worksheet A1and A2.
3. Complete the crossword (Worksheet B) using the word bank at the bottom
of the page.
Additional activity for older kids: Use the following words as a special Spelling

Social Studies & Geography
Use Worksheet C1 or C2
1. Using the word bank provided on the worksheet, label the 13 colonies.
Older Student option: After labeling the 13 colonies, label the Hudson River,
Cape Cod and Massachusetts Bay. Then, using one of the notebooking pages,
explain their significance in relationship to the 13 colonies.
Science
Cranberry Bogging
1. Use 1-2 bags of cranberries and a glass 9x13 pan or a clear, shallow tub.
2. Follow the instructions on this site for some fun cranberry science.
Cooking is Science
While you’re prepping for Thanksgiving , have your children help in the kitchen.
Talk about how heat changes things. Holiday
cooking provides lots of opportunities to explore
irreversible change. For example, when you fry a
turkey, it can’t be un-fried. Or when you bake a
pie, it can’t be turned back in to a pumpkin.
Have fun with it and maybe even do a little ex-
perimenting with your recipes!

Math
There are a couple different math pages to choose from.
1. Color by number for Preschool - 1st grade.
2. Color by answer is based on a 2nd grade math book, but could also be used
for 3rd graders as a quick and fun review.
3. Use the blank coloring page to make your own “color by” sheet or leave blank
for younger kids.

Drama
Have children act out a portion (or all) of the
History of Thanksgiving from Handout A or a
book they’ve read. For example, they could act
out the first Thanksgiving meal with Pilgrims and
Natives or the Pilgrims first meeting with Squanto.
Have them use costumes you have or make their
own!

Visual Arts
Pick one or two, or work through them all if you spread out the unit.
For Preschoolers
1. Print the black and white turkey page. Tear pieces of fall colored tissue paper
and glue them on to make “feathers” on your turkey.
2. Make a handprint and footprint turkey, like this one.
K - 5th Grade
1. Draw a picture of the First Thanksgiving.
2. Using clay or playdough, make some of the foods that would have been at
the First Thanksgiving. (i.e. maize/corn, turkey, potatoes)
3. Draw a turkey and label the different parts of it.
4. Paint a turkey or scene from the First Thanksgiving on a canvas.
All Ages
1. Create your own Native American headdress with feathers (either bought or
paper) or a pilgrim hat (boy) or bonnet (girl)
with these free templates.

Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived through the
first brutal winter. In March, the survivors finally moved ashore to begin their new
life. They were greeted by an Abenaki Indian who spoke English. Several days
later, he returned with another Indian from the Pawtuxet tribe, named Squanto.
Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees,
catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also bridged the gap be-
tween the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians, a local tribe, to form an alli-
ance.
In early autumn of 1621, the 53 surviving Pilgrims celebrated their successful
harvest, as was the English custom. Governor, William Bradford, organized a
celebratory feast and invited some of the Native American allies they had come
to know, including the Wampanoag chief, Massasoit. Although no exact menu
was recorded, a chronicler wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four
men on a “fowling” mission and the Wampanoag’s brought five deer to the
feast. It is likely that lobster, seal and swan
were also on the menu, as they were
prevalent in the area. It is also believed
that Native American spices and cooking
techniques were used, since the Pilgrim’s
had no oven or refrigeration and their
supplies from the Mayflower would have
dwindled by that time. It is unlikely that
they had any desserts at the feast, as they
had no way to cook them.

That 1621 celebration is remembered as the “First Thanksgiving in Plymouth.”
The Pilgrims did not call this harvest festival/celebration a “Thanksgiving,” alt-
hough they did give thanks to God for the harvest. To them, a Day of Thanks-
giving was purely religious. The first recorded religious Day of Thanksgiving was
held in 1623 in response to a providential rainfall. Eventually the religious Day
of Thanksgiving and the harvest festival celebration merged and evolved in to
one a single event - a yearly Thanksgiving, proclaimed by individual governors
for a Thursday in November. This new custom of an annual Thanksgiving cele-
brating abundance of the harvest spread across America.
Not all presidents proclaimed Thanksgiving as a day of celebration. Some didn’t
celebrate at all. George Washington called for a Day of Thanksgiving in 1789,
for Americans to express gratitude for the happy conclusion of the country’s
war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their
presidencies. It wasn’t until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln heeded the request of
a prolific editor and writer, to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. He sched-
uled it for the last Thursday in November and it remained as such until Franklin
D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in 1939, in an attempt to entice re-
tail sales during the Great Depression. However, many were opposed to his plan
and eventually he signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in No-
vember in 1941.
