SECTION A READING

Q1. Read the following passage

1 Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing worn by

large number of people in a country. However popular styles of furniture,
homes and many other products are also fashion. The kinds of art, music,
literature and sports that many people prefer can also be fashions. Thus a
fashion is or reflects a form of behaviour accepted by most people in a
society.
2 A fashion remains popular for a few months or years and then another
fashion takes its place. A product or activity is in fashion or is fashionable
during the period of time that many people in society accept it. After a time
however the same product or activity becomes old fashioned when the
majority of people no longer accepts it.
3 A clothing style may start as a fashion, but its use becomes a custom if it is
handed down from generation to generation. Today wearing long trousers
is a custom for men in most countries. But changes in the colour and
shape of trousers have taken place through the years.
4 A fashion that quickly come and goes is called a fad. The majority of
people do not accept fads. Some people may become involved in faddish
behaviour because fads get a lot of publicity.
5 Today people follow fashions for many reasons. New fashions may be
adopted immediately by well known people including athletes, film stars
and political figures. Then other people follow these fashions so that they
can also look important. Some people think that fashionable clothes and
surroundings raise their status in life.
6 People also follow fashions to make themselves more attractive. Standards
of beauty change through the years and people decorate themselves
according to the changing standards. Ideas of beauty also change from
culture to culture. For example people in many countries use cosmetics to
look attractive. In some countries people decorate themselves with tattoos.

Q2. Read the following passage

A Nice Cup Of Tea

1. Do you know that about eighty crore cups of tea are drunk every day all
over the world and that India is the biggest producer of tea in the world?
Who has not heard of Assam tea or other trade names of Indian tea ? The
words ‘Assam’ and ‘Darjeeling’ tea are famous all over the world for their
tea. “Come in for a cup of tea” is a common refrain the world over.
Whenever there is a miniature social occasion or when we want to relax
and have small, easy talk, tea always comes to our help.
Tea is also grown in Nilgiris (Southern India) ,Kangra, (Himachal Pradesh)
Ceylon etc., but Assam has the largest concentration of tea plantations in
the world.
2. It was the month of May last year that I accompanied my friend to Assam
where his father is a manager of a big tea estate. He took me to show the
tea estate. It really presented a magnificent view. Against the backdrop of
densely wooded hills was a sea of tea bushes stretched as far as the eye
could see. Then at places there were also tall trees which had been planted
to give shade to delicate tea bushes. These trees are grown at a distance of
8-10 ft. to protect the bushes from the direct rays of the sun and torrential
rains.A large number of labourers, predominantly women were collecting
the tea leaves in the long conical baskets hanging on their backs right
across the shoulders.
3. Best tea is obtained from leaves of right maturity , neither too soft nor
fibrous. As for colour of the leaves, it should be bright green, not yellow or
dark green. The leaves must reach the factory within a few hours of
plucking where the right percentage of moisture is maintained before the
actual processing begins.
4. While plucking, the labours not only should pluck two leaves and a bud for
the best quality but must ensure that the new sprouting shoots are not
damaged.
Good pruning of tea bushes is also an important factor. They are generally
pruned after about two to three years depending upon the age of the
bushes. Well maintained bushes can give good harvest upto 50 years or
more .
5. The process of tea making involves drying fermentation and
[Link] are two types of processes – one for the orthodox tea or the
leaf tea and the other for CTC which is most in demand these days .
Actually CTC means cut, twist and curl. The leaves are cut to a particular
size, given a twist and finally curled all [Link] flavour of tea
depends upon the degree of fermentation. And finally,it is the art of
blending which gives a uniform blend to a particular brand.
