SULZER pT Tela Toit) Shell Mass Transfer Technology Performance with Experience Sulzer Chemtech and Shell Global Solutions Alliance of Technology ‘The complete Shell Mass Transfer Technology Package, previously used only by Shell companies, has been available from Sulzer Chemtech since 2000 under the terms of the alliance between Shell Global Solution BV and Sulzer Chemtech Ltd. ‘The technology covers high performance trays, associated internals and phase separation equipment. This technology has been the standard for years and has been backed by an abundance of operational and design experience, Sulzer Chemtech now offers these high performance trays and separators to their customers. ‘The Shell Mass Transfer Technology Package is an excellent complement to the Sulzer Chemtech current line of structured and random packings and trays. ‘The Sulzer Chemtech and Shell alliance brings together extensive resources and experiences covering high performance mass transfer products. Sulzer Chemtech has been the manufacturer of choice for the Shell trays and internals for many years and has the broad experience in mechanical design and installation, Shell, on the other hand, has applied, designed and operated these technologies for several years. Furthermore, the products offered by Sulzer Chemtech under this alliance have been under continuous develop- ment by Shell for years and represent the state-of-the-art mass transfer technology. The joint development will continue to support the Shell mass transfer technology package Content Alliance of Technology Performance Calming Section™ Trays HIFI™ Trays Calming Section" Plus and HiFi" Plus Trays ConSep™ Tray ‘Swirl Tube™ Tray and HIFI™ Extraction Tray Schoepentoeter™ Swirl Tube Separators (SMS", SMSM"™, SMMSM and SVS) 1 Experience " Maximum Useful Capacity of Column Internals all ConSep ara Si Tue aye capacity envesnal rays L Flow Parameter = 47 ¥ rympgtow eta py vanow dena [gh Be ighld denaty ayn abr ai Calming section and HiFi Tray Technology ‘Highest capacity and efficiency available in downcomer trays + Extensive experience with refinery, LNG and chemical plants ‘+ Well suited to increase existing plant capacity (revamp) + Lower tray spacing can reduce reboller and condenser duties. + A proven technology; excellent reliability based on actual operating experience ‘+ Reduced capital expenditure due to smaller column size ConSep and Swirl Tube Tray Technology Furthermore this technology offers: * Highest capacity and efficiency ‘compared to any other mass transfer device currently available in market, Le. 30 to 100% greater than alternative technology + Extensive experience in offshore applications Performance Crude Distiller Gasoline Splitter Debutanizer Hydro-Cracker Main Fractionator PP Spiitter e a a ° A Glycol Dehydrator Reliability ‘The design methods used for the Shell mass transfer products are extremely reliable and have been field and pilot tested extensively. ‘They make the applications of the Shell mass transfer technology ro- bust and also enhance the predict- ability of the outcome in aretrofit ora new design. Reliable designs are extremely critical to any new or re- vamped project and are very be- neficial to the overall capital invest- ment costs. 1g Section Tray Shell Calming Section trays are nor- mally applied at flow parameters below 0.1. They are used to max imize Jet Flood Capacity and min- imize entrainment. Calming Section trays are designed with very large ‘open or bubbling areas, which ‘combined with the box downcomer design, allows for increases in useful capacity of 10 to 30% over conven- tional trays. This characteristic also allows for closer than normal tray spacing, i. downto300mm. Valves Both, Calming Section and HiFi trays can be fitted with sieve holes, movable or fixed valves: *Sieve ‘* Round Valve RV1 *Snap-In Valve Caged Valve Mini V-Grid MVG ‘Advantage can be taken from the technology developments offered by Sulzer Chemtech to re- duce entrainment and pressure drop. The design maximizes downcomer capacity while maintaining high open area and the tray is point symmetric around the tray centre, HiFi trays are frequently used to reduce tray spacing, For example, if more per- formance is required in the column and a °S for 2” or "4 for 3” retray is necessary. Further more these trays can handle foaming systems better than conventional rays. Construction Shell Calming Section and HiFi trays can also be fitted with Sulzer Chemtech bolt-less Lip-Slot™ tray panels connection for fast installation and removal Installation time can be reduced by approximately 30%. The trays are placed on 360° support rings. For columns of larger diameter, beams are required, The Use of lattice beams allows a cost and space saving construction. This system requires one beam for the support of two trays and is often used for revamps: where "3 for 2" or "4 for 3° retray is required. No ‘welding workat the column wallis necessary. Plus Option on Shell CS and HiFi Trays ‘Shell Calming Section Plus and HiFi Plus trays are newer versions of the previous Calming Section and HiFitrays. These trays incorporate more efficient downcomer designs to increase the liquid handling capacity by 10 to Fixed Valves MVG Froth differences: Sieve vs. MVG decks Downcomer Inlet Device 20% over normal Calming Section and HiFi trays, Furthermore, the incorporation of low entrainment bubblers such as Mini V-Grid fixed valves MVG give a higher usefulcapacity. High froth due to vapor ‘cushion lifting froth Froth collapses due to horizontal discharge Shell ConSep Tray Shell ConSep tray is the highest capacity device in this portfolio. The capacity is 50 to 809% higher than conventional trays, and 30 to 50% higher than Calming Section or HiFi trays. ‘They maximize both jet flood and downcomer capacity. Typical flow parameter range is between 0.05 and 1. The tray spacing is the same asin conventional trays. ‘The ConSep tray combines the large bubbling area and liquid handling capacity of the HiFi tray with a liquid de-entrainment stage. ConSep trays, at moderate to high pressures, are used mostly in debot- tlenecking applications. They offer an inexpensive debottlenecking option when an existing column Principle Sketch Tray Deck #1 ConSep Tray #1 Separator Deck #1 Downcomer from Tray Deck #1 ConSep Tray #2 aes Downeomer trom Separator Deck #1 ‘Separators of ‘\. They are sed at flow parameters below 0.05, and become particulary interesting below 0.02. Ideal application forlow liquid rate at high pressure, such as for natural gas dehydration with Tiiethyleneglycol owes 530 Lugs ‘Shell HiFi Extraction Tray HiFi Extraction trays are particularly well suited for systems with inter- facial tensions below 25 dyne/em and large phase ratios. They can be used to enhance the capacity of existing extractors in aromatics extraction, caustic trea- ting, and Lube oil applications, Shell HiFi Extraction vs. RDC in Sulfolane extraction: * Increased capacity by 15 to 25% and 20% more separation stages Shell HiFi Extraction vs. Conventional Sieve trays: ‘+ Increased capacity by 10 to 15% at equivalent efficiencies. + Lower tray spacing can be used without capacity loss. Shell Schoepentoeter Shell Schoepentoeter vane inlet device is the lowest pressure drop device for the two phase feed inlets. It is also used in conjunction with all mass transfer devices, namely trays, structured- and random packing. The device is operating successfully many times for flashing feeds and reboiler returns. The required inlet The design of the Schoepentoeter is adapted to the requirements of the service. CFO studies can furtherhelp to optimize the design of the device which has to operate under critical conditions. nozzles considerably smaller than for conventional inlet devices. When debottlenecking itis often not necessary to enlarge the existing inlet nozzle. ‘The Schoepentoeter gives excellent phase distribution, phase separation and operates with negligible pressure drop. Shell Swirl Tube Separators (separation equipment) The Shell Swirl Tube Separator family consists of: + SMS Separator + SMSM Separator + SMMSM Separator (for gas dewpointing) + SVS Separator These separators use Shell Swirl Tube gas/liquid cyclones, combined with sophisticatedinlet devices and high performance wire mesh coalescers/demisters. Their typical application window is for separation of liquid/gas or three-phase liquid/iquid/gas mixtures, when a high capacity and a high separation efficiency is, required. SMS(M) Technology is the lowest weight and volume solution for phase separation offshore and onshore. It gives up to 150% increased capacity compared to wire mesh demisters without vessel replacement. ‘The Switl Tube Deck can also be used as ahigh capacity mist eliminator in combination with the new Shell mass transfer devices as well as structured packing, The removal efficiency is equal or better than that of conventional mist eliminators, SMS Separator SMSM Separator 0 Sulzer and Shellhave extensive experience designing and operating columns. Calming Section and HiFitrays are used in more than 2000 columns worldwide, Their applications range from Main Fractionators to Superfractionators and include many chemical applications. ‘Typical Crude Distilling Units designed using Shell Calming Section and HiFi trays Country Capacity Feedstock Year Saudi Arabia Two units each Arab Light 1984 18,500 Tid Philippines 18,000 Iran Light 1995 Thailand 20,000 ‘Arab Light 1996 Singapore 300 Condensate 2000 Canada 33,000 Heavy feed 2002 ‘Typical C3-Splitters designed / revamped using Shell HiFi trays Country Year Diameter (mm) Design/Revamp South Aftica 1991 2060 Design Australia 1992) 2600 Revamp Netherlands 1995 5000 Design Malaysia 1999 3350 Design Netherlands 2000 6000 Revamp Austria 2000) 4830 Revamp Several Debutanizers and HGU Main Fractionators have used Shell ConSep trays in the last few years.
