Week of October 3, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build an enduring foundation for academic, moral, and social success. Williams School students embody integrity, confidence, discipline, and a love of learning.

Honor before Honors

Hello Williams School Families,

Thanks to several parents who came together to sponsor this event. The screening of the Race to Nowhere was a huge success. Approximately 168 people gathered together in the MPR and the kindergarten room to view the screening. Lee Slater had the honor of introducing Bart Baldwin to our community and the event took off from there. The content of the film provoked many thoughtful observations from our Williams families, and had some Non-Williams families wondering why they did not have their children here at TWS. While the film was not only thought-provoking, it also validated what we are doing right here at TWS. Towards the end of the questioning session a parent asked, What is the solution to the problem? Bart responded with, TWS has already started the process of answering that question by being courageous enough to start the conversation, have the conversation and continue the conversation about what is best for our childrens education- this is a testament to the strength of TWS community. Thank you to everyone that attended this event. It is apparent that the evening was very successful for the conversation has continued on throughout the week and during our parent/teacher conferences. For those of you that are interested, here is the link to the article in the New York Times that Mr. Baldwin recommended. Thank you to the Howells for forwarding this link on to us earlier last week.

The Education Issue: What if the Secret to Success Is Failure?

By PAUL TOUGH

Why our children's success - and happiness - may depend less on perfect performance than on learning how to deal with failure.

Character. Achievement. A Sense of Belonging. (And, of course, the Uniform .)

All of this and more that is offered by the Cub Scout experience is available to the boys of The Williams School in grades 1 through 5. Starting this year, the scouting tradition of TWS is being joined with Pack 31, a stalwart unit chartered by First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk with strong ties to Taylor Elementary School in West Ghent. Pack 31 is led by Cub master Tom Mooney, and additional information about the unit is available at [Link] This new direction promises a renewed vigor for scouting at TWS, and we are very excited for the year ahead. In addition to the awards and advancements that comprise the core of the Cub Scout program, highlights of other upcoming events include the Rain Gutter Regatta, Fall and Spring family campouts (including an October campout at Cheatham Annex Campground in Williamsburg), and that time-honored fixture of scouting, the Pinewood Derby. Pack 31 also will be involved in a variety of service projects that will give the boys the unique sense of accomplishment that comes from working as a team to help others and give back to ones community. If you think your son would enjoy this experience, please consider joining the Cub Scouts as new members of Pack 31. If you would like to get a first-hand view, each of the dens [Tiger (1st grade), Wolf (2nd grade), Bear (3rd grade) and first- and second-level Webelos (4th and 5th grades)] will have its first meeting at Taylor Elementary School at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 13. Please feel free to join us and see what Cub Scouts are all about. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 624-1192 or 629-2834 or [Link]@[Link].
