Disclaimer
NAMCO takes no responsibility for damage, injury, loss of life, or any loss of monies due to
improper maintenance or improper operation of the gearbox. Each company/client/customer is
responsible for training their operators/drillers on how to properly maintain & operate the gearbox.
Limitation of Liability
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, the Customer and Seller further agree
as follows:
1. The Seller shall have no liability whatsoever on any claim, whether in contract, tort
(including negligence) or otherwise, for any loss or damage arising out of, connected with,
or resulting from the manufacture, sale, delivery, resale, repair, replacement or use of any
product, part or equipment, except as specifically provided in the warranty provisions
hereinabove. In no event shall the Seller be liable for special indirect or consequential
damages.
2. The Seller shall in no event be liable to the customer or to any other party for lost profits or
revenue, loss of business, loss of goodwill, loss by reason of shutdown or non-operation,
increased expenses of operation, damage to Mating Equipment or other equipment, or any
other loss or damage relating in any way to products or services, whether direct or
consequential, special, indirect or punitive, even if advised of the possibility of such losses
or damages, or for any claim by any third party.
The foregoing limitations apply regardless of the causes or circumstances giving rise to such loss,
damage or liability, even if such loss, or damage or liability is based on negligence or other torts or
breach of contract including, without limitations, fundamental breach or breach of a fundamental
term.
Warranty
1. The Seller warrants that any equipment or part manufactured by it will be free from defects
in material and workmanship under normal use and proper installation and service for a
period of twelve (12) months from the date of delivery. In order to commence a warranty
claim, the Customer must return the equipment or part in question to the Seller or to an
authorized distributor of the Seller within twelve (12) months of the delivery of the
equipment to the Customer. If the Seller's examination discloses a defect, the Seller shall at
its option either repair or replace the defective equipment or part. The warranty does not
cover transportation, installation, labor or other costs which shall be the sole responsibility
of the Customer. All replaced equipment or parts shall become the property of the Seller.
2. The above warranty does not apply to products normally consumed in operation or which
have a normal life inherently shorter than the said twelve (12) month warranty period, nor
does the above warranty apply to any service or repair work carried out by Seller.
3. The Seller does not warrant any product not manufactured by itself, but agrees to pass on to
the Customer whatever benefit of any warranty the Seller received from the supplier (the
“Supplier”) of the product and takes no further responsibility for such equipment or
products other than to be the Customer's primary contact with respect to all warranty
claims against the Supplier.
4. For the purposes of its limited warranty, the Seller will not deem as defective any
equipment or part damaged or impaired by reason of reasonable wear and tear or the
Customer's failure to properly install, store, maintain, service or operate the equipment or
any Mating Equipment.
5. Unless specifically consented to in writing, the Seller shall not be liable for the cost of any
repair, replacement, adjustment, servicing or maintenance of the equipment or part by the
Customer or by a third party at the Customer's request and shall not warrant any defect of
equipment or parts which it considers in its discretion to have been repaired, altered,
neglected, or used in any such way as to affect the product adversely. Without limiting the
generality of the foregoing, this warranty does not apply to any equipment or part used in a
manner for which it was not designed.
6. The Customer shall not use, operate or install any part or equipment that it knows to be
defective and shall bear the sole risk and liability for any such use, operation or
installation.
7. THIS WARRANTY IS GIVEN EXPRESSLY IN PLACE OF AND EXCLUDES ALL
OTHER WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WHETHER
UNDER COMMON LAW, STATUTE OR OTHERWISE, AND THERE IS
EXPRESSLY EXCLUDED EVERY FORM OF LIABILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE,
DIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL, RESULTING FROM DEFECTIVE MATERIAL,
FAULTY WORKMANSHIP OR OTHERWISE.
General Description
NAMCO provides custom made gearboxes for use on ALTA Rig Systems Inc. Drawworks. This
gearbox has 4 parallel shafts with the housing split on a horizontal plane through the center of the
shafts. The 3 stage reduction gearbox utilizes a pinion shaft and single helical gears which are
supported by anti-friction spherical bearings.
All gears are manufactured from alloy steel, gas carburized after rough machining, and ground to
obtain AGMA quality level 13. Splines are manufactured to AGMA quality level 8 from alloy
steel. Shafts are manufactured from alloy steel, gas carburized after rough machining, and then
machined to final tolerance.
The gearbox is equipped with a pneumatic cylinder to shift the gearbox manually or pneumatically
to the desired gear ratio (HI speed or LOW speed). Also incorporated into the shifting cylinder
design, are proximity sensors that detect what gear ratio is engaged.
The gearbox housing is fabricated from carbon steel plate. The gearbox housing weldment is also
heat treated and stress relieved after welding to minimize distortion (after machining) and
increasing fatigue life. The bores are fabricated out of heavy steel plate, which enables them to
provide a ridged support over the entire width of the bearing. There are bolt-on-covers at the top
of the gearbox for convenient examination of gear meshes and to ease troubleshooting.
NAMCO recommends not disassembling the gearbox in the field in case of contamination.
Only in a controlled environment can the proper repairs be completed.
Refer to ALTA Rig’s Gearbox removal procedure and ship gearbox to NAMCO.
Obtain a sample of the gear oil for analysis.
Ensure gear oil has been drained from the gearbox prior to transportation.
Maintenance Instructions
Recommended Lubricants
The gear drive supplier, NAMCO, recommends an AGMA 4S or 5S gear oil for use in the
gearbox/lubrication control system, for cold/moderate climates. For hotter climates AGMA 6S
gear oil should be used. Geographical location and oil heaters play a role in the type of oil used,

Oil Filling
It is recommended to fill the gearbox with gear oil when the gearbox has been installed onto the rig
floor and when it is on level ground. The oil dip stick should be located near the output shaft cover
plate. Check the dipstick and fill until oil registers between the min & max limits. Inspect for
leaks especially around the oil filter and drain plug. DO NOT OVERFILL.
Filtration
The oil in the lubrication control system/gearboxes and the oil added to the hydraulic system must
always be filtered. The lubrication system has an oil filter with a standard 25-micron purity filter
for each gearbox. It is recommended the filter is changed at a minimum:
Every two months for the first year of operation
Every three months for the second year of operation
Every four months for each consecutive year of operation.
or more often depending on the level of exposure to contamination.
Notes:
Sediment can build up in corners, elbows, fittings, and any such similar orifices. When replacing
gear oil, also remove the hose from the fitting at the top of each bearing cover (integral part of gear
case) and use compressed air to blow any sediment deposits out of bearing lube holes to ensure
proper bearing lubrication. Ensure that all set screws are replaced to their original position to
ensure proper bearing lubrication.
The mixing or blending of different brands or types of gear oil or grease can cause unintended
chemical reactions, such as slugging, gumming, etc. Flush the complete lubrication system prior
to changing from one lubricant type to another.
The respective manufactures should be contacted prior to changing from one lubricant to another.
For further information please contact NAMCO or our representative in your area.

Note: Oil Level of the Gearbox should be checked at start of every shift. If oil is dirty or unclear,
change oil as indicated in this manual.
