Vital Signs Lab Worksheet for Nursing Students

This document summarizes the results of a lab exercise measuring various body vitals. It includes tables showing measurements of temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure at rest and after exercise. Calculations are shown converting temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. A line graph illustrates changes in pulse rate and breathing rate for three individuals at rest and after exercise. Body mass index is calculated and interpreted for one classmate. Factors affecting blood pressure are listed.

MEASUREMENTS & CONVERSIONS OF BODY VITALS LAB

WORKSHEET
Part 1: Vital Signs [10 pts = 2 understanding; 6 correct response; 2 impression}

1. As a nurse you are asked to “take the patient PR stat”, What does this mean?
Quickly or immediately

2. From the biomedical perspective, why is it necessary for employing facilities to conduct proper training and
annual check-ups of the 4-main vital signs? Give at least 2 reasons for each vital sign in your response.

3. When are vital signs taken? When a patient reaches the medical facility,after giving certain medication,
before surgical procedures and after surgical procedures as well and when patient shows symptoms

Part 2: Body Temperature [15 pts = 2 understanding; 10 results response & structure; 3 analysis}
1. Name the method used to take the body temperature.
under armpit, in the mouth, in the ear, in the rectum,

2. Name three other methods and state if there is a difference in the normal body temperature reading.

3. Draft a Table of results showing your classmate’s:

a. Three body temperature readings at rest
b. Three body temperature readings after exercise
c. The mean measurements

4. Show your calculations converting the temperature measurement from 0C to 0F and K.

Temperature 1: 36.1 c -
F= C(36.1)*9/5+32= 96.98
K= C(36.1)+ 273.151= 309.25

Temperature2 :
F= C(36.4)*9/5+32= 97.52
K= C(36.4)+ 273.151= 309.55

Temperature3
F= C(35.7)*9/5+32= 96.26
K= C(35.7)+ 273.151= 308.85

5. Provide a short explanation for the difference in mean temperatures at rest and after exercise.
While doing the exercise heat is produced which causes the internal body temperature to increase

Part 3: Pulse Rate & Breathing Rate [15 pts = 2 understanding; 10 results response & structure; 3 analysis}
1. Record your classmate’s Mean Pulse Rate and Breathing Rate and 2 others to complete the Table below:

Mean Pulse Rate Mean Breathing Rate

Classmates At Rest After Exercise At Rest After Exercise

Person 1 72 90 20 26

Person 2 75 95 18 20

Person 3 73 93 17 19

2. Create a line graph of each person’s Mean Pulse Rate and Breathing Rate. Use different colors on the graph to
represent the vitals per person. Don’t forget to include a key (legend)!

3. How did the pulse rate change before and after exercise? Was this your expectation? Defend your answer.

Part 4: Blood Pressure (BP) [8 pts = 2 understanding; 6 correct response}

1. My resting BP was 130/70 , after 2 minutes of exercise, my BP was 140/80 .
The difference in BP is because the blood pressure increase because when exercising the heart pumps
three to four times the amount to give the muscles the oxygen it needs

2. Research has identified more than 15 other factors that can affect blood pressure, list any 8.
Diabetes, Obesity, Tobacco, Genetics, Too much alcohol, Age, unhealthy diet,
3. Compare the symptoms of hypertension to hypotension.
Hypertension is high blood pressure and Hypotension is low blood pressure

Part 5: Body Mass Index (BMI) [8 pts = 2 understanding; 6 correct response}

1. Show the calculation of your classmate’s BMI.
For this calculation we used the metric formula
BMI formula: weight(kg)/[height(m)]2
= 56.8 divided by (1.70 x 1.70)
= 56.8 divided by 2.89
= 19.7

2. What category on the BMI Table is he/she? What is the medical implication(s) of this?
the BMI which was 19.7 is healthy

3. You work as a licensed practical nurse and monitor the weight loss of patients in a health clinic. You use BMI
as a tool for measuring successful results. One patient started with a BMI of 28.5 and now has a BMI of 24.
How much has his BMI decreased? How could he have lowered his BMI and reduced his body fat?
The BMI has decreased by 4.5 the patient could be on a diet.

Part 6: Appendix [4 pts = added results inclusion}

Include all other results collected during the lab exercise not presented above in the worksheet assessment.
