6. Marcopper Mining Corporation used to be a primier open pit copper mine in the country with the
development of its San Antonio orebody in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque. It was the biggest private employer
and corporate taxpayer on the island. It also generated power that energized the entire island of
Marinduque.
Recently, Marcopper was forced to shutdown operations by government due to a spill of its tailings into
Boac river and on to Calancan Bay causing heavy siltation and endangering marine life. The disaster
created a severe negative impact to the Philippine Mining Industry because it hightened the violent
anti-mining sentiments of NGO's, local and national government units, the catholic church and
environmentalists worldwide. As a result, other mines were also closed while potential mining operations
have difficulty securing permits, ECC and social acceptabilities due to public fear that similar disasters
might occur.
a). What actually happened at Marcopper? Show schematic diagrams that will illustrate the disaster.
b). What was on top of the San Antonio orebody originally?
c). What was the general development plan implemented by Marcopper in the development of this
orebody in relation with its depleted Tapian open pit?
d). What specific safety and environmental lawsor rules were violated by Marcopper.
e). What remedial solutions were implemented by the company to promptly arrest the spill? What other
measures are currently being implemented or maintained to prevent a recurrence.
f). What rehabilitation works were implemented by the company to mitigate the adverse effects on the
rivers and communities thereat.
g). Is there a potential danger in the near future? Explain.
h). As a professional Mining Engineer, will you allow the re-opening of Marcopper? Why or why not?

7. A porphyry copper deposit was delineated to contain considerable values of copper, gold, silver and
molybdenum. Seventy five (75) diamond drillholes (DDH) have been completed at a grid of 50 X 50
meters. Due to its very shallow occurrence, the deposit is definitely mineable by open pit mining method.
As the companys Senior Mining Engineer, you are instructed to establish a preliminary orebody model
and generate an initial open pit design for pre-feasibility study. As such, it became imperative that the
bench height be optimized first after which level plans for the orebody model can be established.
To do this optimization procedure, you have selected the following DDH as representatives of the whole
orebody:

8. The Diwalwal gold rush area in Monkayo, Compostela Valley (formerly under Davao del Norte) has been
contributing substantially to the economic development of the area for the past decades. The local
government thereat reported that employment generation was estimated at 20,000 during the height of
operations. It is likewise believed that Tagum became a city because of Diwalwal.
Very recently the area was closed and all operations thereat was suspended by the DENR. Similarly,
the local government stopped issuing ore transport permits (OTP's) to the small producers. This caused
displacement of miners resulting to outrageous reactions, killings and legal battles among stakeholders.
a). What actually happened in Diwalwal?
b). What MGB rules and regulations were violated? If any?
c). What safety and environmental rules were violated?
d). What environmental damages were incurred, if any?
e). As a Professional Mining Engineer, what recommendations will offer to rationalize the area?
