GOD CALLS JOSHUA
Joshua was one of the greatest leaders in Bible history, succeeding Moses and leading Israel into the
promised land. His life provides many lessons for us today, as we can learn about his faithfulness, courage
and trust in God even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
BIBLE READING: Joshua
MEMORY VERSE: “Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be
discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

OVERVIEW OF JOSHUA'S LIFE

1. Birth and childhood of Joshua: Joshua was born in Egypt and was one of the enslaved Israelites
there. Joshua was the son of Nun and was born into the tribe of Ephraim. (Exodus 33:11)
2. Joshua is chosen as a spy: Joshua was one of the 12 spies sent by Moses to explore the land of
Canaan. (Numbers 13:1-16) He was one of the two who trusted God and wanted to enter the
promised land.
3. Joshua serves as Moses' assistant: Joshua led the battle against the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-13).
4. Joshua succeeds Moses: After the death of Moses, God chose Joshua to lead the Israelites into the
Promised Land. (Numbers 27:15-23)
5. Conquest of Canaan: Joshua led the Israelites in a series of battles against the Canaanite nations,
ultimately defeating them and establishing Israelite control over the land. (Joshua chapters 6-12)
6. Division of the land: Joshua oversaw the division of the conquered land among the tribes of Israel.
(Joshua 13-19)
7. Joshua's farewell address: Before his death, Joshua gave a farewell address to the Israelites. He
reminded the people of their covenant with God and urged them to remain faithful to God's
commands. (Joshua 23:1-16)

KEY POINTS

1. HAVE FAITH THAT GOD WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU - JOSHUA 1:5
We face all sorts of challenges in life, from schoolwork and friendships to family issues and personal
struggles. It can be tough to navigate these ups and downs, but we can find guidance and strength in
knowing that God is with us.
Just like Joshua, we can find strength and direction by turning to God for guidance (Joshua 1:5). No matter
what we're going through, prayer and trust in God can help us overcome any obstacle.
Remember when Joshua faced the Amorite kings in battle (Joshua 10:12-15)? He asked God for help and
experienced a miraculous victory!
There are many other Bible verses that remind us of God's constant presence and support:

1. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God
goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)
2. "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and
your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)
We can learn from Joshua's example and put our trust in God's promise to never leave us. Instead of trying
to handle everything on our own, we can ask God for guidance and courage. We can be sure He is with us
every step of the way, making all the difference in our lives.

2. TRUST THE LORD'S TIMING - JOSHUA 10:14

We often wish things would happen more quickly, especially when resolving problems. In these moments,
we can learn from Joshua's example of trusting in the Lord's timing (Joshua 10:14). Joshua knew that even
if victory took longer than expected, God would still come through at the perfect moment.
There is great comfort in knowing that God's timing is always right.
The Bible is full of passages that show how God's timing is perfect. Consider Abraham, who waited years
for God's promise to be fulfilled and for Isaac to be born. Or consider King David, who faced years of
struggles before finally becoming king (1 Samuel 16:13). Don't forget Joseph, who endured many difficult
times before reuniting with his family (Genesis 45). These examples teach us that even if we don't
understand why things are taking longer than we'd like, God is working behind the scenes for the greater
good.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the
heavens." This verse shows us that God's timing is always perfect, no matter how long we might have to
wait.

3. MEDITATE ON GOD'S WORD - JOSHUA 1:8

Joshua 1:8 says, "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so
that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."
Living a successful Christian life is impossible without relying on Scripture.
Joshua 1:8 reminds us that we can be prosperous only if we meditate on the Word diligently and do what it
says. We must never ignore or cast aside the Bible because it is our source of wisdom, knowledge, and
peace. We need to study it and apply its principles faithfully to live a life that honours God.
The Bible encourages us to meditate on God's Word to grow closer to Him and learn His will for our lives.
Biblical meditation is different from Eastern meditation styles, as the primary focus is on filling our minds
with Scripture rather than emptying it for relaxation.
Biblical meditation is a practice of prayer and reflection in God's Word, allowing us to absorb its teachings.
Psalm 1:2 says, "But his (the blessed) delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and
night."

4. CHOOSE WHO YOU WILL SERVE - JOSHUA 24:14-15
In Joshua 24:14-15, Joshua takes a stand for God by urging the people of Israel to decide between serving
God or other gods. He tells them, "Choose today whom you will serve."
This is an important reminder we must decide who or what we will follow.

There are consequences for every choice we make, and we need to be mindful of how our choices may
affect us both now and in eternity. Will we commit ourselves fully to serving God with all of our hearts? Or
will we allow something else, like money, fame, power, or pleasure take precedence in our lives?
Joshua's steadfast commitment to serving God is a beautiful example for us to follow. Joshua declared,
"But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." He was clear that he and his family were choosing
to serve God together.

CONCLUSION
Joshua's life is a testament to the incredible things that can happen when we put our faith in God and
follow His guidance. By meditating on God's Word, trusting in His timing, and choosing to serve Him
wholeheartedly, we can find strength, guidance, and fulfilment.

Instructions:

1. Set up two signs on opposite sides of the room (e.g., "A" on one side and "B" on the other).
2. Ask everyone to make a choice of their favourite A or B, (e.g., beach or mountains, pizza or burgers, sports or
arts).
3. After several rounds, present the choice between "Serving God" and "Serving Worldly Things." Allow the
participants to choose and then discuss their decisions.
4. Share the story of Joshua and his family, emphasizing how Joshua made the decision to serve the Lord

WAIT FOR THE RIGHT TIME

Materials needed: Stopwatch.

Instructions:

1. Gather the group sitting on the floor.

2. Explain each player must count silently in their minds to a given time (e.g., 10 seconds) and then stand up as
close to the exact time as possible.
3. The leader starts the game by announcing the time they want the players to count (e.g., 10 seconds). Once the
time is announced, the leader starts a stopwatch.
4. All players silently count in their minds, and when they believe the time is up, they stand up. The leader monitors
the stopwatch and notes the time each player stands up.
5. Once all players have stood up, the leader announces who was closest to the given time.
6. Play several rounds, varying the time the players must count (e.g., 7 seconds, 15 seconds, or 20 seconds).
7. After the game, engage the group in a discussion about the importance of patience and trusting God's timing, as
Joshua did in his battles.

TRUST WALK
1. Set up an obstacle course using chairs, or other objects, creating a path with twists and turns.
2. Divide group into pairs. In each pair, one player will be blindfolded, while the other will act as their guide.
3. The guide will lead their blindfolded partner through the obstacle course using only their voice to give directions.
The blindfolded player must trust and listen carefully to their partner's instructions.
4. After the game, engage the group in a discussion about trusting in God's guidance and His promise to always be
with us, as demonstrated by Joshua. Encourage them to share their experiences from the game and how it felt
to rely on their partner for direction.
