The Human Flourishing in Terms of Science and Technology
First off, we will discuss about technology as a mode of revealing. Technology is defined as a mean to
human and society. Naimagine niyo na ba yung future, in post apocalypse world, na walang technology?
No cellphones, laptops, telivisions, mp3s. Walang electricity and vehicles? Technology filled our
everyday routines. So now, we will discuss about technological advances and development throughout
human history.
Familiar naman tayo kay Mr. Aristotle diba? He was born 304 before Christ, an ancient greek
philosopher scientist who contributed so much to science, technology, political theory and many more.
Isa sa mga contribution niya sa science ay ang importance ng experiments over philosophy. Like how a
chick hatches from an egg. It is not determined by philosophy but rather by a simple experiment
(hatched through warm nest). For him, examining something that exists helps technological
development. (turns into something more valuable or more useful)
Technology develops based on human’s needs and demands (nakadepende din sa atin) and its
judgement will be based on its value. (good or bad)
Moving on, Technology as poesies that is applicable to modern technology. Poesies mean revealing
something into existence that did not exist before.
There are selected views on technology. Aristotelianism, (which we discussed earlier) Technological
Pessimism, Technological Optimism and Existentialism.
First is Technological Pessimism. It implies that technology is progressive and beneficial in many ways
especially for humans BUT it is also doubtful and questionable in many ways. Everyone is not bound to
keep up with the new technological advances. For sure, many of us experienced na yung parents or
grandparents natin ay nagpatulong kung paano gumamit ng mobile phone. May mga businesses na
nagsara dahil hindi sila makasunod sa new way of advertising. (instagram and tiktok) A French
philosopher, Jacques Ellul, supported this idea. He gave four points as his pessimistic argument.
Number one, technological progress has a price. Number two, technological progress creates more
problems. Number three, technological progress creates damaging effects and lastly, number four,
technological progress creates unpredictable devastating effects. His arguments are found weak and not
true by other people. Kumbaga sa korte, kulang at hindi supported and evidences niya about his claims.
Next, Technological Optimism. So what is the antonym of pessimism? Optimism. Technologists and
Engineers supported this view, and of course, pati yung mga ordinary citizens. They believe that
technology can alleviate and provide for all difficulties. Such as simple machines. Technological optimism
defended that even though technology creates problems, it will still be the solution to it. Walang gamot
sa covid? Science and Technology will find a way to create anti bodies. Mahirap makipag communicate
using pager? Science and Technology invented mobile phones.
And the last technological view, Existentialism, which will be discussed by Ms. Ocson.
OCSON
Existentialism, from the word itself, it is an approach that emphasizes the existence of something.
Martin Heidegger, a philosopher, supported this philosophy. Para sa kanya, ang totoong essence ng
technology lies on how men reveals unconcealed inventions.
Heidegger considered the statement “technology meets humans needs” as a misleading one.
Technology exists to help human but we should never disregard that there is a good and bad effect of
technology. A mobile phone helps people communicate from two different places and gave many
people an opportunity through social media but also causes addiction of usage and exposed to radiation.
Among all of us, hindi naman natin madedeny na walang times na hindi tayo nagoveruse ng ating mga
cellphones diba?
Another problem Heidegger saw in the definition of technology is that it strengthens a man’s desire to
technology, kung saan umaabot na sa point na sobrang dependent natin dito. It reaches the point where
technology controls us more than we control them. He said in order to separate the existence of
technology to the existence of human, we must ask these questions.
“What is the instrumental itself? Within what do such things as means and end belong?”
Upon asking these questions, Heidegger arrived at a discussion that ivoolves four ways for something to
exist.
Aristotle Four Causes. Material cause, Formal cause, Final cause and Efficient cause.
Gumamit si Aristotle ng silver chalice para ma-illustrate ang four causes.
The material cause or kung saan gawa ang chalice ay sa silver.
The formal cause is the shape that gave the chalice an image.
The final cause is the purpose of the silver chalice.
The efficient cause is the one who made it, a silversmith.
In conclusion:
Technology as a mode of revealing because it is intertwined with how we live such as our practices and
surroundings. A seed can be sow as time passes by waiting for it to grow but technology revealed that
seeds cultivates agriculture as it is not only produced but could also be stored and cater more
population.
Technology as poesies that is applicable to modern technology. Technology is also enhanced and
modernized. Gadgets are now more high-techs, hospitals has now more machines and military
equipment are upgraded.
Questioning as the piety of thought helped people to approach technology in different ways. It helps us
see the tragedy it causes, the advantages it helps and the existence that comes from an external cause.
1.) Why should technology be questioned -According to Heidegger technology should be questioned
because it would enable our mind to evoke and gather so much wealth of insight about the
technology and that in the said process wewould submit ourselves to these insights. As has been
emphasized by Heiddeger, questioning is the piety of thought which implicitly suggests that by
questioning technology we will obey and submit to the thoughts and insightsthat our mind evokes
about technology. Hence, our thoughts on technology are defining factors on how we take the roles
of technology in our lives and the world we live in
2.)how does art provide a way out of enframing In its ability to move us away from technology and
toward ideas, art gives us a method to escape enframing. If sensitivity is even present in a person, art
awakens it. A component of poetry is truly perceiving things as they are and using one's imagination
to do so.
3.)in your daily experience of technology, what else is revealed to you aside from its function -We of
Generation Z rely heavily on technology in our day-to-day lives. Each of us benefits greatly from
technology since it makes our lives and occupations easier. It becomes a component of our
conversation, enabling one-tap communication with others. We employ natural resources like
gasoline to power an automobile instead of using animals for transportation. The technology has
shown that it is not good at all. Gadgets make life easier but end up teaching us to be lazy.
Transportation technology teaches us how to travel faster but also causes the destruction of our
environment due to the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide released by car fuels.
