ACTIVITY TITLE: BIOTECHNOLOGY
LEARNING TARGET(S):
• Outline the processes involved in genetic engineering.
• Discuss the applications of recombinant DNA.
CONCEPT NOTES
Biotechnology- is a broad area of biology, involving the use of living systems and
organisms to develop or make products.
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)- is an organism that has had its DNA altered or
modified in some way through genetic engineering
*In most cases, GMOs have been altered with DNA from another
organism, be it a bacterium, plant, virus or animal; these organisms are sometimes
referred to as "transgenic" organisms,
DRAW AND TELL. Now that you have learned about the use and application of different
biotechnologies, design your own genetically modified organism (GMO) that could
potentially solve or help in addressing existing problems be it on the environment, food
shortage, medicine, etc. Briefly explain how it will be bioengineered and how it can
potentially be of help to different organisms. Name your GMO. You can use the box below
for the illustration and explanation.
(Genetically Modified Octopus Blood and Salmon Fish)
Salmon is used in the world of cuisine for not only it is nutritious but also brings a
savory flavor to people’s buds. Some of the benefits it gives off according to research is
that the Vitamin B12 in Salmon keeps blood and nerve cells humming and helps you
make DNA. But for your health, the true beauty of Salmon is its wealth of omega-3 fatty
acids. Most omega03s are considered essential fatty acids. Meanwhile, it is said that
octopus blood contains the copper-rich protein hemocyanin, which is more efficient than
hemoglobin for oxygen transport at very low temperatures and low oxygen
concentrations.
Octomon is a genetically modified organism of Salmon fish (Salmo salar) and octopus’
(octopoda) blood. This new formed organism came to thought for the typical growth
hormone-regulating gene in salmon was replaced with antifreeze protein the octopus
blood has, a gene that octopus has for surviving in places below-freezing waters. With
such gene, this salmon fish can prevent freezing and causes growth compared to a
common salmon fish. Having a bigger portion of Salmon being reproduced can be so
much of help in the marketplace and people who wants consume it, then with that
maybe even make this fish available for people who can’t afford buying a large-sized,
high-quality fish.
This innovative idea can potentially help our world by means of using the power of
biology, specifically saying, biotechnology, under the ranch of blue biotechnology which
is rooted on the marine and aquatic application of biotechnology.
