Historical Antecedent
• Balochistan is the largest territorial area in Pakistan (With around 43 percent of the territory,
hosting seven percent of Pakistan's population)
• bordered by Iran and Afghanistan.
• Balochistan is a heterogeneous region. Its population consists of various ethnicities such as
Baloch, Pushtoons, Brahui and Hazaras.
• Balochistan is vital strategically because of its coastal resources as the province's Exclusive
Economic Zone (EEZ) is rich with mineral resources, particularly Gwadar and Ormara.
• Baloch nationalism is constructed on the basis of rivalries, fragmentations and personal
vendetta.
• Since the country's inception, the authoritative tendencies of the central government have
been the main factor behind the absence of devolution of power from the upper hierarchy to
the lower one.
• The tussle for power between the two tiers of government in Pakistan has given birth to the
Baloch nationalism that evolved from the freedom struggle to secessionist and then to the
armed rebellion.
• The tribal nature of Balochistan has given birth to ethno nationalistic tendencies and patron-
client [Link] successive governments in Pakistan, on the other hand, have tried to
manage the conflict rather than resolve it.
State strategy to deal with this issue
• The state has adopted a three-pronged strategy to deal with the
issue of Balochistan:
• 1. Through management of the information, psychological warfare
• 2. through political ( support for some trible chiefs : sense of alienation
among common Baloch)
• 3. Military deployment
