SHELTON HIGH SCHOOL

AVIATION COURSE OUTLINE

YEAR
2023 - 2024 INSTRUCTOR
MR. GODDARD
Dear Student & Parent/Guardian:

I will be your child's SHS Aviation teacher for the Fall 2023-2024 school year. My name is Mr. James
Goddard, a 30-year veteran teacher and pilot. I spent most of my high school career teaching Physics in
Michigan and Connecticut, preparing students to enter college. Early in my teaching career, I pursued
my love of aviation and obtained my private and instrument pilot's license. Soon after that, I received
my ground instructor's license. I have loved aviation as a hobby and was elated to have the opportunity
to initiate SHS's first aviation course in 2018-2019. I love teaching science and aviation at the high
school level. Students are very impressionable at this age, and I feel a tremendous responsibility to help
them discover areas in aviation and science that may interest each student.

As this class is an introduction to the world of Aviation, it will highlight many of the elite career
opportunities available in the Aviation industry. We will also discuss Aviation's timeline from its wild
beginnings to the exciting future still being unveiled! There has never been a better time to seek these
prolific and lucrative Aviation careers!
Our Aviation class stays broad enough to be exciting and relevant to anyone interested in Aviation.
However, it begins to focus on content necessary for Pilots (manned and crewless aircraft), Air Traffic
Controllers, and Aerospace Engineers. This course is still an excellent place for students thinking about
Aviation Maintenance Technology, Drones, Military Opportunities, and other aviation careers. Students
will begin simulator training to learn flight training techniques and experience hands-on Aviation
learning.
Students will learn about Aerodynamics, Weather, Aircraft Components and Systems, Radio
Communications, FAA Regulations, Navigation, Flight Planning, Aeromedical Factors, and more.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. The easiest way to reach me is via e-mail
at [email protected]. I will do my best to update you on class activities and your child's
progress. The final page of this outline is a parental and student signature sheet verifying that both
students and parents are familiar with the basic requirements of this class. Shelton High School has most
parental e-mails in its database; all students have an assigned school e-mail address. But if you prefer a
different e-mail address or telephone number, please let me know on this form so I can communicate
more effectively. I ask students to return this to me in person or electronically for my records.

I look forward to a fantastic semester.

Sincerely,

James Goddard

Class and Departmental Policy Regarding Attendance, Late Work, Google Meet, & Grading:

Attendence:

I will take attendance daily and report this to our district's Infinite Campus computer system. If your child is
absent, please get in touch with their respective house office about the absence.

Late Work:

Attention to our syllabus and announcements is essential as students lose 10% daily on late assignments unless
excused through their house office. If they miss class, they may miss what is discussed and may miss out on
important information regarding assignments. Our departmental policy is a deduction of 10% daily for late
work, with a maximum 30% deduction for three days late. Beyond the three days, the assignment will no longer
be accepted. Tests and / or projects considered a test grade are due as assigned, without the ability to be late,
unless an excused absence is registered with the student's house office. Tests missed by forgetfulness or lack of
attention to deadline dates are not able to be made up.
Grading:

I usually give two opportunities to take each quiz and/or test. The benefit of this is that students get their results
immediately upon completion of the assessment. They then can decide to retake the quiz or test within the
allotted time frame. The catch is that I will keep the last grade, not the best grade. Therefore, they need to
decide if they are happy with their current grade or opt for the retake. One final comment about online
assessments (if utilized), the program will record the IP address of the computer network each assessment is
taken. As we are transitioning back to the classroom, the future remains uncertain and I am continuing to
develop online assessments. My primary focus this Fall is to return to pre-pandemic assignments via "paper &
pencil" but I may move quizzes and test to an online platform. This decision will be made once we move further
into the school year, now that we are a "one-to-one" school district. Students should be bringing their computer
to class daily.

Assessments
* Tests / Projects 50%
* Labs / Smaller projects 25%
* Quizzes 15%
* Classwork / Homework 10%

Students who qualify under 504 or Special Education provisions will be granted the accommodations and/or
modifications as outlined in their educational plan.
