COMPETENCY
• Name the basic elements of a story.
• Identify the different structures of a story.

UNDERSTAND
Title: Appreciate overall artistic value of the structure and elements of the selection
(structuralist/formalist)

A story has five basic but important elements. These five elements are: the character, the setting, the
plot, the conflict and the resolution. These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and
allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.

What are the Elements of a Story?

Story?
Elements of a Story

1. Character is a person or animal or really anything personified. The author should introduce the
character in the story with enough information that the reader can visualize each person. This is
achieved by providing detailed description of a character’s physical attributes and personality
traits. Every story should have a main character. The main character determines the way the
plot will develop and is usually who will solve the problem the story centers upon. However,
the other characters are also very important because they supply additional details, explanations,
or actions. All characters should stay true to the author’s descriptions throughout the story so
that the reader can understand and believe the action that is taking place and perhaps even
predict which character may do next.

Types of Character

● Protagonist: the main character whose journey we follow throughout the story
● Antagonist: sometimes known as the foil, the character whose goals come up against the
protagonist, leading to conflict
● Dynamic Character: a character who changes as a result of the events in the story
● Static Character: a character who does not change his/her identity in a story

2. Setting is the location of the action. An author should describe the environment or surroundings
of the story in such detail that the reader feels that he or she can picture the scene. Unusual
scenes such as fantasy world can be interesting, but everyday settings can help a reader to better
visualize the story and feel connected to the plot.

3. Plot is the actual story around which the entire book is used. A plot should have a very clear
beginning, middle, and end with all necessary description and suspense, called exposition so
that the reader can make sense of the action and follow along from start to finish.

Written by: PUTRI- MAZ -WARA A. TADJUL (SST-1) DPLMHS-JHS (Lesson 2)

Plot Structure

● Exposition - introduces the character and setting

● Rising Action something that challenges the characters as they meet a challenge or crisis
● Climax - the turning point and the most exciting part of a story
● Falling Action - events that follow as a result of the climax
● Resolution or Denouement - the end part that occurs after a conflict is resolved and a
character has been changed

4. Conflict refers to the problem or complication that the characters must face. It may be a clash
between characters in the story, or against other forces. A story without a conflict is nothing,
because it is what adds color.

5. Resolution is the solution to the problem, and it is the way the action is resolved. It is important
that the resolution fits the rest of the story in tone and creativity and solve all parts of the conflict.

The dark sacred night. What a wonderful world.
