Naruto shadow clone jutsu hand signs.
"Naruto" has been one of the world's most popular manga and anime franchises since its debut in 1999. Its massive fanbase has played a major role in keeping it going — and boy, has it kept going. The "Naruto" manga series ultimately ran until 2014, spanning a mind-boggling 72 volumes, while the anime ran from 2002 to 2017. Like all fans,
"Naruto" aficionados have favorite characters, favorite moves, and, perhaps most uniquely, favorite hand signs. Hand signs are used to perform ninjutsu, genjutsu, and other secret arts. They properly summon and mold a person's chakra, and are often performed in rapid succession. It doesn't hurt to slow the playback down a bit to see them in all
their glory when you're binging your favorite episodes — there's more going on there than you might initially notice, and they're crucially plot important. One example of an extreme use of hand signs is the Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique, which requires a staggering 44 hand signs in rapid succession. Some characters completely
master the use of hand signs, and can perform complex maneuvers using just one motion. Other fighters, like Naruto, learn to perform one-handed signs, which becomes particularly necessary after he loses his arm (though he later learns to work with a prosthetic). No matter how they're used, hand signs are key to "Naruto." We're here to break them
down, from what they do to who performs them best. The Rat hand sign is performed by extending the right index and middle fingers. These are grasped by the other hand, while the left index finger is kept on top, with the left thumb remaining on the outside. Rat, which is used for nature transformation release, is deployed by the Nara clan.
Additionally, Rat plays an essential role in the Nara clan's Shadow Imitation techniques. In the anime, Shikamaru Nara uses Rat to trigger Shadow Possession jutsu. This extends a person's shadow over a larger area, allowing it to reach distant targets. When the person's shadow encounters the target, the victim is compelled to follow the user's
movements. Rat can also be performed multiple times in quick succession, as it taps into a user's chakra reserves. To perform the Ox hand sign, a shinobi sticks all of their fingers out and crosses them, leaving the thumbs out. To do this properly, the left hand must face outward, while the right hand faces inward. Once this is complete, the user must
lay the left ring and middle fingers on the right hand, making the remaining fingers look like a bull's horns. Also, both forearms must be held parallel to the ground. Performing the Ox sign takes extensive practice, as it can be challenging to do quickly — even compared to other signs, it's an awkward one to deploy. Ox isn't used as part of a Nature
Release; it's mainly used by members of the Uchiha clan for Fire Release techniques. This makes Ox a go-to sign for Sasuke and Itachi, who have a penchant for fire jutsu. Ox is also the fourth of six hand signs used in the Phoenix Sage Fire Technique. While the Uchiha Clan favors Ox, many outside the clan have also mastered its use. Tiger is one of
the easiest hand signs to perform. The shinobi clasps their hands together with their fingers intertwined.
The forearms are kept parallel to the ground, as the left and right index and middle fingers are raised together. Tiger is the hand sign used as the precursor for all Fire and Earth Releases, which means it's employed quite often throughout the "Naruto" anime. Sasuke often uses the Tiger hand sign when performing fire jutsu, which forms chakra deep
within the stomach. It's superheated and released through the mouth as vivid fire, which makes for a handy weapon. Some shinobi alter and enhance this ability by incorporating explosive tags, gunpowder, and other items, to typically devastating effect. Tiger is used throughout the Land of Fire and Leaf Village, and is a favorite of the Sarutobi and
Uchiha clans. The most devastating form of Fire Release that uses Tiger is Amaterasu, which Itachi uses in his fight against Sasuke. Hare is performed by making finger guns with the left hand, which is then slid into the right hand with the pinky extended. This hand sign is used for a variety of moves, and is often deployed by Kakashi to perform
Chidori jutsu. Hare is the second of three hand signs in this jutsu, which releases an immense amount of chakra in the form of lightning.
A particularly massive amount of chakra accumulates in the hand, where it's converted and released as electrical energy. Chidori can be incredibly dangerous — so dangerous, in fact, that it's classified as an immediate assassination technique. That said, it can also be used to incapacitate an opponent via electric shock, if wielded very, very carefully.
Kakashi eventually masters Chidori and teaches it to his disciple, Sasuke, who adopts it as his signature technique. The Dragon hand sign is not easily executed and requires a fair bit of training to master, as the finger placement isn't entirely comfortable. To use Dragon, a shinobi interlocks their fingers with the pinkies pointed to the ground,
touching at the tips. Similarly, the thumbs are crossed and held above the interlocked fingers.
Unlike many other hand signs, Dragon isn't a precursor for nature transformation jutsu. Despite this, it has an interesting use when combined with a nature transformation jutsu. This produces a dragon-shaped manifestation, formed from a specific natural element. For example, when used in fire jutsu, it creates a dragon made of fire. While this is
undoubtedly cool, it's not entirely practical, due to the high energy levels and clunky hand movements necessary to pull off the Dragon hand sign. Despite this, it commands major respect.
Who doesn't want to create a dragon out of water or fire and have it attack one's enemies? No wonder Kakashi, Zabuza, Tobirama, and Itachi all favor using the Dragon hand sign in their jutsu. Snake is arguably the easiest hand sign a shinobi can perform, as it only requires the user to interlock the hands. Said hands are kept perpendicular to the
ground, and the forearms remain parallel. Snake is used in a wide variety of jutsu, including Lightning, Earth, and Wood Releases. This means shinobi from all over use it, rendering Snake one of the most commonly used hand signs.
When used in Wood Release, Snake converts the user's chakra into a source of life.
This can emanate from the body and be used to create trees, flowers, seeds, and whole forests in some cases. In Lightning Release, Snake helps increase the chakra's vibrational frequency to generate electricity. Because it's used in Wood, Earth, and Lightning Releases, Snake is used by Hiruzen, Hashirama, Kakashi, Sasuke, and many others. Yamato
employs Snake in Wood Style: Transformation, which he's particularly adept at using. Snake is also useful in Shadow Clone jutsu. Suffice it to say, it has a wide variety of uses. Horse is a bit awkward to pull off, but it's used in a variety of techniques, so many shinobi take the time to master it. To perform the Horse hand sign, a shinobi must connect
the tips of their index fingers while interlocking the remaining fingers at the ends of the knuckle.
The right finger must always be on the top of this configuration, as the palms face inward. It's a very tricky arrangement to pull off, requiring time and skill to master. Horse is vital in dispelling illusions created via genjutsu techniques. Though that's helpful enough on its own, it's definitely not the hand sign's only use. Sasuke and others use Horse to
perform the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique. This technique uses a great store of chakra inside the body, which is converted into fire that is expelled from the mouth. The Great Fireball Technique often manifests as a stream of flame, but it can also take the shape of a massive fiery orb. This chars everything it touches and can cause severe
burns on a target. While the Uchiha clan is the sole user of this technique in the manga, there have been instances of others outside the clan using it in the anime. Ram is performed by sticking the left and right index and middle fingers together as they point upwards. The right fingers are positioned approximately two centimeters below the left. The
left ring and pinkie fingers overlap those on the right hand, which are tucked into the palm.
Ram is one of the most ubiquitous hand signs in the series, as it is often used by Naruto to perform his oft-deployed Multi Shadow Clone jutsu. As the name implies, Shadow Clone creates exact duplicates of the user, which can be used to support and/or perform combined attacks. Unlike other clones seen throughout the series, these aren't illusions,
and can be used in physical attacks. Naruto evenly distributes his chakra among the clones to perform this act, giving them each a fraction of his power. They can perform their own techniques, including Shadow Clone jutsu, which can grow the number of clones exponentially. Of course, Naruto isn't the only shinobi to use Ram, as it's used in a
number of jutsu. For example, Tobirama Senju, who created the technique, uses it frequently. Monkey is a relatively easy hand sign to perform. It requires the user to place their palms together and hold them parallel to the ground as they slide their right pinky between their left thumb and index finger. This is a pretty easy hand sign to knock out,
which is helpful, as it's useful in a whole lot of jutsu. Sasuke uses it to channel his Chidori, for example, which he employs often. Monkey isn't seen much outside of Sasuke's signature move, but it isn't his hand sign alone. Zabuza's Water Dragon Technique requires Monkey to be signed, and Monkey is often the second hand sign used in Water
Releases. Monkey is also necessary for the Summoning Technique, which means it gets a lot of use throughout the series. Specifically, the Summoning Technique uses Monkey as the fourth of five hand signs. Bird, sometimes called the Rooster, is made by connecting the middle and pinky fingers while the ring and index fingers intersect. The thumbs
are pressed together at the tips, forming a triangle-shaped hand sign. Bird is used in the Wind Release nature transformation, allowing the user to perform various wind-based jutsu techniques. Bird must be performed quickly, making it especially challenging to master. Naruto uses Bird whenever he employs Rasengan, which manifests a spinning ball
of chakra in the palm for use as a weapon. He's one of a select few shinobi to know or even master Rasengan, which begins as a close-range move and evolves (for some) into a projectile attack. Additionally, using Bird in various Wind-type chakra techniques can channel its energy into weapons, making them even deadlier. Dog is one of the simplest
hand signs to perform, as it only requires placing the left palm on top of the right fist. Dog is used in nature transformation techniques, with a specific focus on Water Release. It is often used by the people of Krigakure (aka the Mist Village), such as Kisame and Zabuza, who have mastered various Water Release techniques that are used throughout
the anime. Dog is also often used by members of the Yuki Clan to perform Ice Release. This Release utilizes both wind and water to create ice. While that may not sound particularly imposing, Ice Release can counter fire-based attacks and accomplish a whole lot more besides. For example, Haku develops the Evil Mirrors Technique, which creates a
series of mirrors composed of ice that attack a target at great speed. Boar, sometimes called Pig, is accomplished by creating a partial fist and sticking the palms together. The fists are pointed toward the ground while the forearms remain parallel. Though this is not a comfortable hand sign to perform, Boar is required for any basic nature
transformation technique. Most shinobi learn to master it early in their training, and it's used often throughout the anime. Boar is also needed for the various summoning jutsu. It's one of the first signs demonstrated in the series, as it's used by Jiraiya, member of the Legendary Sannin, to summon toads. In addition to using Boar, a person must also
offer a blood sacrifice, which is often done by biting the tip of the thumb before beginning. Of course, to do this, one must first sign a blood contract with a species, or it won't summon anything. Interestingly, if someone attempts to summon an animal without signing a blood contract first, they are transported to a place where the desired species
resides. When executed correctly, a person's chakra is molded into the creature that is summoned, and the amount of chakra used determines the animal's size. Elemental hand seals are different from standard hand seals in several ways. There are five types: Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Lightning.
Each is accomplished using one hand. Fire is done with a flat hand, with all the fingers extended. Water uses a flat hand with all but the index finger extended, as this is placed beneath the thumb. Wind features an extended thumb and pinky, while the remaining fingers are tucked into the palm. Earth requires the index and middle fingers to be
extended with the other fingers tucked into the palm.
Finally, Lightning is done by extending the index and pinky fingers, with the remaining fingers tucked into the palm. Elemental hand seals are used by shinobi (and non-shinobi) via their Shinobi Gauntlet. A technique must be written and sealed into a scroll and placed inside the Shinobi Gauntlet for this to work. The nature of the technique in
question determines which of the five elemental hand seals are used. Once this is accomplished, the technique is executed. A Shinobi Gauntlet enables anyone — even a non-shinobi — to use complicated jutsu without any training – aka cheating. These unique items aren't seen in the original "Naruto" or "Naruto: Shippuden" series, but they are
featured in "Boruto" and its associated books, movies, manga series, and games. While there are 12 signs related to the Chinese zodiac and five elemental hand seals used with the Shinobi Gauntlet, there are far more found throughout the franchise. Some clans have hand signs unique to their associated techniques, and many are seen only briefly in
the anime (if at all). Still, at its core, the "Naruto" franchise has three types of hand signs: Those mentioned, and the special hand signs primarily used in traditional shinobi sparring.
The special hand signs are, specifically, the Seal of Confrontation and the Seal of Reconciliation. The Seal of Confrontation resembles an amalgamation of the Tiger and Ram, and symbolizes combat. Essentially, it is a sign of engagement between shinobi used to concentrate chakra, primarily for simple and basic techniques. Deidara uses the Seal of
Confrontation to detonate his explosive clay, and others use it for various techniques throughout the series. The Seal of Reconciliation is different from the other hand signs in that it is used only for sparring. It isn't used for any battle techniques and is more of a symbolic hand sign used to express the friendship that continues after a match concludes.
To begin a sparring match, the opponents make the Seal of Confrontation, which effectively states, "I've come to face you in battle." When the session ends, the fighters lock their fingers together to make the Seal of Reconciliation, showing that they're still friends. Seals (印, In, English TV: Hand Signs) are used to perform many ninjutsu, genjutsu, and
other secret arts other than taijutsu.
Invented by Indra Ōtsutsuki[1] in the anime, they are designed to aid people in properly summoning and moulding chakra necessary to perform a technique.[2] There are different sequences of hand seals for every technique, requiring memorisation. While techniques may require a number of hand seals to work, a skilled ninja can use less or even one
to perform the same technique. An example of this is the Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique, which requires a total of 44 hand seals to activate.[3] Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, only needed to use one hand seal to complete the technique, a testament to his skill.[4] In fact, by Part II, Sasuke Uchiha has managed to master the
Chidori to the point of not needing a single hand seal to invoke it and could use Fire Release techniques with only one hand seal. By reading the hand seals of the opponent, a ninja can predict the nature of the technique to be performed, which is virtually unavoidable if read by the Sharingan.[5][6] Although rare, it is possible for a shinobi to be able
to do hand seals with just one hand.
Shinobi seen capable of this include Haku,[7] Fudō,[8] Guren,[9] Minato Namikaze,[10] Naruto Uzumaki,[11] Sasuke Uchiha,[12] Shojoji,[13] and Kawaki.[14] It is also possible for shinobi to form hand seals with one of their hands while using the hand of another person as a substitute for the opposite one. This can happen voluntarily, like when
Naruto and Sasuke joined hands to dispel the Infinite Tsukuyomi,[15] or forcefully, such as Anko Mitarashi using Orochimaru's hand for the Twin Snakes Mutual Death Technique,[16] or (in the anime) Obito Uchiha using Kakashi Hatake's for the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique.[17] Even rarer than one-handed hand seals, are shinobi who have
abandoned this traditional practice altogether, usually because their fighting style revolve around speed and quick reflexes and have developed techniques that require no hand seals to complement this fighting style. Certain elemental releases often end in the hand seals they are affiliated with. For example, Fire Release often ends with Tiger, Earth
and Wood Releases often end with the Snake hand seals. Basic Hand Seals[] There are twelve basic seals, each one named after an animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Rat (子, Ne): This hand seal is commonly affiliated with the special Shadow Techniques of the Nara clan. Ox (丑, Ushi) Tiger (寅, Tora): This hand seal is commonly affiliated with Fire[18] and Earth Release.[19] Hare (卯, U) Dragon (辰, Tatsu) Snake (巳, Mi): This hand seal is commonly affiliated with Earth,[20] Lightning,[21] and Wood Release.[19]
Horse (午, Uma) Ram (未, Hitsuji) Monkey (申, Saru) Bird (酉, Tori): This hand seal is commonly affiliated with Wind Release.[21] Dog (戌, Inu): This hand seal is commonly affiliated with Water Release[21][19][22] and the movie-only Ice Release. Boar (亥, I) Other Hand Seals[] Besides the twelve basic hand seals, there are unique hand seals used for
certain techniques. These hand seals are rarely seen, and can be considered unique to specific techniques. Elemental Hand Seals[] The five one-handed elemental seals. To use an elemental technique through the Kote, one must seal the technique in a scroll and put it inside the device.[23] Depending on the technique's chakra nature, the user must
then form one of five one-handed seals to release the technique. These seals are: Fire Release: A flat hand with all fingers extended. Water Release: A flat hand with all fingers extended except the index finger, which is put under the thumb. Wind Release: Thumb and pinky are extended, the other fingers lie on the palm. Earth Release: Index and
middle finger are extended, the other fingers are curled into the palm. Known as Seal of Confrontation. Lightning Release: Index and little finger are extended, the middle and ring finger are held down with the thumb.
Seal of Confrontation[] The Seal of Confrontation (対立の印, Tairitsu no In, English TV: Spar Sign), which looks like a half-tiger/ram, is the symbol of combat and is a universal sign of engagement between shinobi. It represents half of a seal that might be used to activate a ninjutsu. This motion is often used to concentrate chakra, and many shinobi are
seen initiating simple, basic techniques as well as few complex ones after making this seal. Deidara also often used this when he detonated his explosive clay, and Sai and Inojin used it for their Super Beast Imitating Drawing. Madara Uchiha's and Hashirama Senju's statues at the Valley of the End are both forming the Seal of Confrontation whilst
facing each other. Seal of Reconciliation[] The Seal of Reconciliation (和解の印, Wakai no In, English TV: Unison Sign) while not used in battle or for techniques, is used in Traditional Shinobi Sparring as a demonstration that the two opponents are still comrades after sparring. Manga Hand Seals[] Clone Seal[] This seal is most commonly associated
with the creation of clones using techniques such as the Shadow Clone Technique, its derivative and the Multiple Wood Release Clone Technique, separate from the basic twelve seals, where index and middle fingers from both hands are crossed.[24] This hand seal is also used in performing the Water Release: Water Shark Bullet Technique. In
Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky, prior to receiving his prosthetic arm, Naruto adapted this seal for one-handed use, creating the seal's cross with his left hand's index and middle fingers. Clap Hands[] This is more of an initiation of a technique rather than a hand seal where the user simply claps their hands together as exemplified when
Naruto Uzumaki, for example, summons chakra or is breaking genjutsu. The hand seal sequence for powerful summoning kinjutsu like the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation and the Dead Demon Consuming Seal end with this motion; similarly, Jiraiya prepares to enter Sage Mode (summoning Shima and Fukasaku) by performing this motion
and sustaining it, Hashirama uses it to enter Sage Mode as well, Gaara uses it for Quicksand Waterfall Flow at his fight against Kimimaro. It is also used to perform the Chibaku Tensei technique. Once the seal sequence is completed, the user's hands are held in this position until the desired effect is achieved. While entering its third transformation,
the Ten-Tails has been observed to make this particular seal. Slam Surface[] Used in techniques such as the Summoning Technique and several Earth Release techniques, this is also more of an initiation of a technique than a seal. The user presses their hand to the surface that is affected. Haku's Seals[] The seals used for Haku's Thousand Flying
Water Needles of Death, are quite different than the basic twelve seals, and are also performed with one hand. Crossed Tiger[] Haku's Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals technique can be done with a special seal, which resembles Tiger with middle fingers crossed over the index fingers. Interestingly, Orochimaru also uses this seal when giving the
Cursed Seal of Heaven to an individual.[25] Mirrored Ram[] The basic Ram seal is mirrored. To form the seal, the hands are joined together where the right hand thumb is on top of left hand, and the forefinger and middle fingers are facing vertically. This seal is used by Obito and Madara for Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal,[26] and also for Sage Art:
Yin Release Lightning Dispatch.[27] Jin Seal[] This is another one of the seals that are used in normal techniques, yet isn't one of the basic twelve seals. The "Yang Water" (壬, Jin) seal is used in techniques such as the Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique and the Shrine Seal. In the anime, this seal is formed similar to the Dog seal, but the
left hand is under the right, and the left's palm is facing up.[28] Five Elements' Seal[] The fūinjutsu Five Elements Seal used by Orochimaru uses a single special seal, which consists in both hands' thumbs and little fingers touching each other tips, with left index and middle fingers and right index finger raised, with the latter touching the left middle.
The left ring finger is placed over the right ring finger, with both the latter and the right middle folded down (just like the Ox seal in the left hand).[29] Akimichi Seal[] The Akimichi clan use a certain seal in their Multi-Size Technique, which also resembles the Bird seal from frontal view. However, it is confirmed that this is a different seal, as the Bird
seal has been seen in a side view in techniques such as Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique and the Shadow Sewing Technique. The index and little fingers are raised up, the middle and ring fingers are each folded on top of the hand opposite itself and interlocked with each another, and the thumbs are pressed together at their end
segments. In the anime, there are several "variations" to this seal, likely mistakes. Sometimes, it is formed like the Half Tiger, with the little fingers also raised. Other times, it is formed more similarly in fashion to the Bird seal instead, with index and little fingers raised, and with the thumb and middle and ring fingers are folded in and pressed against
each other. This seal is therefore very controversial, as this seal was used instead of the Bird seal multiple times in the anime or in movies, likely a mistake. Yamanaka Seals[] The Yamanaka clan's Mind Body Switch Technique. The Yamanaka clan uses different seals to activate their techniques, such as the Mind Body Switch Technique[30] and the
Mind Body Disturbance Technique.[31] Another seal was used to release the Mind Body Switch Technique and return to the original body. This seal resembled both hands' fingers straightened and crossed into an "X", similar to the Ox seal (however not a "+"), but without the left middle and ring fingers down. Twin Snakes Mutual Death Seal[] A hand
seal involving both the user and the enemy is used in the kinjutsu Twin Snakes Mutual Death.
Mangekyō Sharingan Activation Seal[] Probably another seal used to gather and focus chakra, it was used by Kakashi in his first battle with Deidara, when he activated his Mangekyō Sharingan to use Kamui for the first time seen in the series. It is formed like the Tiger seal, except with the index fingers' end segments pushed down against each other,
forming a house-like shape in the user's point of view. When Kakashi used it, he positioned it in front of his left eye. Sasuke's Snake Seal[] Sasuke used a seal, similar to the Akimichi seal, in his battle with Deidara, when he used either Hidden Shadow Snake Hands or Binding Snake Glare Spell. Daytime Tiger Seal[] This seal is used in Daytime Tiger.
It does not release chakra, but rather keeps it inside the body to use as energy and strength. This creates a missile type of technique which is not a body of chakra. This seal is actually based off one of the original Kuji-In seals, the seal of the Outer Lion. In this case, the hands are meant to resemble a tiger. The index fingers (the "eyes" of the Tiger)
glow green with the evaporating green sweat of the user (result of releasing the Gate of Wonder).
Great Shark Bullet Seal[] Kisame's Water Release: Great Shark Bullet Technique requires this seal. Possibly a comparison to Guy's Daytime Tiger seal, which resembles a tiger, this hand seal is a thrust, but with both hands touching at the wrist and right hand above the left. The fingers are also folded in a way that vaguely resembles shark's teeth.
This overall placement of the hands resembles a shark with an open jaw. Tearing Earth Turning Palm Hand Seal[] When Sumashi uses Earth Release: Tearing Earth Turning Palm, he uses a special seal that is formed by cupping the left hand and turning it so that it faces the ground and placing the right hand next to it with the index and middle
fingers raised.
Other Hand Seals[] Hoshigakure Hand Seal[] The signature technique of Hoshigakure Mysterious Peacock Method uses a hand seal that has the middle and other index finger pushed down and touching, with the right index finger and pinkie touching together to form an arch. This seal looks similar to the Bird hand sign on a frontal view, but is in fact
a different hand sign from opposite angles. Byakugan Seals[] In the anime, certain variant seals to aid in the activation of the Byakugan are seen. Most are some of the basic twelve seals, but several are different. In the manga, seals are indeed used several times, but of course, they cannot be seen with detail. Water Formation Wall Seal[] In the
anime, a special seal is used instead of what is seen in the manga for the Water Release: Water Formation Wall Technique. Fūma Curse Mandala Seals[] In the anime, the Fūma clan used various unknown hand seals for their secret techniques, the Curse Mandala. Guren's Unknown Crystal Seals[] Several "unknown" seals are used in Crystal Release:
Crystal Encampment Wall. Curved Tiger[] In the anime, the Moon Shadow Technique is performed with a seal that resembles the Tiger seal, but with the right index and middle fingers curving in front of the left index and middle fingers, also curved the same way. Covered Snake[] In the anime, some jutsu feature a seal similar to the Snake seal, but
with the right hand fingers all on top of the left instead of interlocking.[32][33] Tornado Lightning Seal[] In Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel, Ranke uses an unknown hand seal to activate her Tornado Lightning. However, considering that neither she nor her comrades knew what chakra is, her technique is unlikely to be ninjutsu, and
her "hand seal" is likely merely an attack gesture.
Land of the Sky's Seal[] In Naruto Shippūden the Movie: Bonds, an unknown seal is used to focus chakra in preparation for attacking from the Flying Destruction Machine. The seal is formed by pressing the knuckles of each hand together, with the back of the hands facing outwards. Land of Demons' Seals[] In Naruto Shippūden the Movie, the
shinobi affiliated with the Land of Demons use unique seals unused by the usual shinobi seen throughout the series. Taruho used the Shadow Mirror Body Changing Method, which used hand seals like: Tiger, but with little fingers pressed inwards instead Tiger/Ram with left hand, and right hand with thumb up "punching" the left Boar, but with left
hand pointed upwards instead Right hand facing down above left, left hand facing up below right; Each hand's index and middle fingers folded, and ring and little fingers straight. Also, the Shrine Seal used by Shion (Yomi also used a technique by repeating the same seal names, although he only held his palm forward the whole time) uses a numerous
amount of different seals with different names as followed: Hatsu: Right palm facing forward, fingertips directing to the right Jin: Right hand Tiger/Ram facing down, placed under the eyes pointing towards the left Kai: Right hand Tiger/Ram, pointing up with arm straight, facing forward After completing the first three seals, Shion begins to levitate,
the seal lights up, a barrier is formed around the seal, and the spheres inside the seal move around the circle (Yomi did not have to do this) Min: Both palms pushed forward, fingertips pointing about 45 degrees up/forward Shin: Both palms pressed together (like a clap) Gan: Left fist "punching" right palm Reppyō: "Rep" seems identical to the
Snake/Earth seal. "Pyō" Each hand in half Tiger/Ram, arms stretched with fingertips pointing forward Shōzen: Both hands in fists, left above right; looks similar to the Rat seal Mika: Seems identical to Min Dan: Each hands revolves around one another into Tiger/Ram, right hand behind left Raku: Left hand raised up facing down with middle and ring
fingers folded and index and little fingers straight pointing towards the left, right palm pushed down facing down pointing forward Shō: Left palm facing down in front with fingertips pointing right, right fist punching left palm from below After completing these 9 seals, the stone tablets in the shrine will arise in front of Shion. Fu: Hold Shō Sai: Hold
Shō Dan: Hold Shō Gika: Hold Shō Ragu: Left hand pointing diagonally up/right 45 degrees, right hand middle and ring fingers folded index and little fingers straight pointing diagonally up/left placed in front of left forearm Bagi: Right palm facing left with fingertips pointing up in front of user, left forearm behind right seal and left fist placed above
right elbow The first four of these are unseen and it may be that she only shouts these words while holding Shō. Yomi did not use these last six seals. Hiruko's Storm Release Seal[] In Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire, Hiruko uses a special seal for the Storm Release: Thunder Cloud Inner Wave, which resembles Tiger, but only with the
middle fingers raised. Trivia[] Hand seal usage is not limited to shinobi. Shima and Fukasaku as well as the Ten-Tails have been observed to make hand seals, and Madara Uchiha's Susanoo has also been seen making seals while pulling a meteorite toward the earth.
In the anime, a kunoichi known as Hanare could use a mind reading technique that required the use of her eye by "weaving seals" with her right eye.
How she does this exactly is unknown. This was not a dōjutsu kekkei genkai as it could be copied with the Sharingan. In the tenth Naruto: Shippūden opening sequence, Naruto, Sakura, and Sai perform a technique using three-handed seals. In Hinduism and Buddhism, hand seals are called mudrā (印相, Sanskrit: ) and are used in everyday life,
but also in religious practices and even in dances. The one most significant with synonymous association with ninja would be the Kuji-In set of Mudra.
The usage of hand seals in the arts of Ninjutsu in Naruto is likely a reference to the powers of Horiki, being fantastical powers said to be gained in esoteric Japanese Mikkyo Buddhism through intense meditation to become in tune with one's buddhahood. In the lore of ninja and ninjutsu, the secrets of Horiki were said to be gained from its beginnings
in ancient Heian era nobility, then revived in practice and was responsible for their mythical powers.
