CRE Interview Insights and Key Concepts

The document discusses key concepts in chemical reaction engineering (CRE) including: 1) CRE is studied to design and optimize reactors based on industry requirements for maximum production and conversion. 2) Kinetics, conversion, yield, selectivity and other parameters are considered to design reactors that meet industry needs with minimum investment, time, and maximum conversion/profit. 3) Reaction mechanisms, kinetics, temperature, concentration, catalysts and reactor types (batch, continuous, plug flow, mixed flow) are discussed in relation to optimizing reaction rates and conversions.

CRE INTERVIEW REACTION ~DHRUV PATEL

• Purpose of chemical reaction engineering?

We study cre bcaz of reactors. We design and optimize
the reactor based on Requirement for maximum
production & conversion of particular industry.

• Why study CRE?

We study kinetics ,conversion,yield,selectivity,how
conversion change,flow pattern,calculate time for
maximum conversion, study about types of rxn…. We
consider this all parameter for designing the reactors
based on requirement of industry. By considering
minimum investment minimum time maximum
conversion maximum profit.

[Link] of CRE
-Elementry & non elementary rxn.
-Molecularity
-Order
-Kinetics of rxn(shows rate of reaction→change wrt to
time→conc of reactant,conc of product,convertion of
reactant)
2. Why we need kinetics?
-utilize maximum time→increase production →improve
conversion
[Link] of rxn?
if kinetics not in our favour we goes through mechanism by
-

changing the catalyst and conditions

4. kinetics varies with
-Temp,press,concentration,inert,catalyst
[Link] of reactions
Basis:
-order
-molecularity
-step involving
-heat of reaction, forward&backward rxn
-reversible irreversible

[Link] of reaction?
-change in mole wrt time.
For homogenius
ri=1/v(dN/dt)
for hetergonenius
ri=1/w or 1/s or 1/v *(dN/dt)
[Link] constant
[Link] affecting of rate constatnt
-temp
[Link] theories
-KHUDSE PADHLE
[Link] of reactors
-batch & continuous
-for slow rxn we can use batch reactor→slow rxn bcaz
activation energy requirement→use catalyst or temp
increase →how catalyst increase the ror→we study energy
level graph (catalyst change the path of rxn)→by using
catalyst requirement of activation energy is low→second
method to increase the rxn we studied the arrhenious
theory→how ror increase to rise of temp→k=k0 e^(-Ea/RT) T
increase so k increase that’s why ror increase →slow rxn
needs high energy so we use batch reactor →for +ve order
use PFR for -ve order rxn use MFR

[Link] Reactors
-MFR &PFR
- -ve order MFR
-+ve order PFR
- for exothermic rxn not use PFR&CSTR →we use batch or
semibatch reactors→decide by conditions

[Link]& Non ideal MFR & CSTR

[Link] of reactors
-increse qulity(conversion)
-increse production
-by order of reactions
n>1 PFR→MFR
n=1 either MFR or PFR first
n<1 MFR→PFR
[Link] are 5 reacors Arrenge Alternate MFR&PFR what is
best arrangement for maximum conversion(n>1)
i)volume same
ans- PFR→MFR→PFR→MFR→PFR
ii)all reactors have different volume
ans- PFR(v1)→M(v2)→P(v3)→M(v4)→P(v5)
-large pfr followed by small mfr
condition→ v1>v3>v5>v2>v4
15. there are 10 reactors 6 PFR 4 MFR all reactors different
first & last MFR Order of rxn=2
Ans- MFR→6 PFR→3MFR(small to large)
[Link] particular process if conversion is given same for
which CSTR or PFR space time will be more?
Ans – For zero order rxn Tmfr=Tpfr
For +ve order rxn Tmfr>Tpfr
For -ve order rxn Tpfr>Tmfr
[Link] designing parameter to make a batch reactor in
which first order reaction A→B occurring
Ans – batch reactor favour mixing . designing parameter is Xa
and time.
[Link] rate constant if another reaction is added in
parallel to this with zero order?
Ans – find the rate before adding and after adding parallel rxn
find conversion , time then after considering all parameter
calculate rate constant
[Link] conversion varies with distance of PFR?
Ans – t/Ca0=v/Fa0=integration o to xa( dxa/ra)
Put v=A*L L is leanth of PFR
[Link] conversion change with changing the flow rate or
adding middle of reactor ?
