PREFACE
The need for competence in solving civil engineering problems facing the world currently has led to
great need of competent Civil Engineers. Due to that need, practical training has been made as an
integral part of the successfully four years [Link]. in Civil Engineering degree course being offered by
the College of Engineering and Technology at MBEYA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND
[Link],provideknowledge,developabilitiesandfoster
[Link]’sneed describes.
These practical training reports contain all what I did during practical training with TARURA in
BUKOMBE district for eight weeks. It was my first practical training I did. During my practical
training I was assigned at TARURA construction and maintenance of Roads where I was
attending at different road construction sites at BUKOMBE district The Practical Training made
me aware of different road works I was able to use the knowledge earned at the University in
cooperating with workers in performing the activities at sites in generating a precisely solutions
to the problems during the training period

A:GENERALREPORT.
1.1. TARURAGENERALINFORMATION.
1.1.1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF
TANZANIARURAL AND URBAN ROADSAGENCY
(TARURA)-BUKOMBE
TARURA In 2017 the Government established Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency
(TARURA) to manage and maintain district roads network. PreviouslyDistrict roads were
managed by local Government Authority (LGAs) and coordinated by President’sOffice Regional
Administration and Local Government. The Agency was established with the goal to improve
service delivery to the public through development and maintenance of roads network in
consistent with the National Vision 2025 and other National planning framework
The Agency was established to address challenges which were common to LGAs in
managing district roads network. Among the challenges include, institutional arrangement,
inadequate financial resource, mismanagement of road works funds and shortage of human
resources with appropriate technical and managerial skills
To address above mentioned challenge, the Agency developed the first strategic plan
(2016\22-2025\26)
1.1.2. (a )THEVISIONOFTARURA.
TARURA; A leading agency in the management of district roads network
The analysis of the current vision shows that, the vision does not match with the mandate of the
agency as depicted in the Road Act. The vision talks about rural and urban road network while
the Road Act talk about district roads network
“To manage rural and urban road network in cost effective manner through planning, desgning,
construction and maintenance for sustainable socio-economic development”
The analysis is of the current mission shows does not match with the mandate of the Agency as
depicted in the road s Act No. 13 0f [Link] mission talks about rural and urban roads network
while the Roads Act No 13 of 2007 talk about district roads network
1.1.3. OBJECTIVEOFTARURA
The objective of TARURA is to support the social-economic growth of the country and to help
reduce poverty through the promotion of trade, support for the economic sectors such as
agriculture, tourism industry and provide access to social services such as health, education and
recreation.

B: TECHNICAL REPORT
CULVERT; is a structure that channels water past an obstacle or to a subterranean waterway. Culvert allows
the movement of people and water, thus, the transportation activities proceed without any interaction, culverts
consist of a length of 6 to 8 meters, culvert may be made from a pipe, reinforced concrete or other materials
2.2.1 INTRODUCTION
2.2.2 STONE MASONRY BOX CULVERT [900mmX900mm] ALONG
UYOVU_NAMONGE_NAMARANDULA ROAD
By definition,Is a tunnel like structure built under Roadway or railways to provide cross drainage from one side
to another,
Stone masonry box culvert provide the movement of people and the passage of water, also it allows the
movement of vehicles like cars, motorcycle ,buses and others. The stone masonry box culvert constructed during
our industrial practical training had a length of 8 meters
10

,
Example of box culvert
A stone masonry box culvert is made up of concrete and especially reinforced concrete
In construction of box culvert different materials and tools we applied,
Materials applied during construction of stone masonry box culvert were:•
A: Cement
B; course aggregate
C ;Water
D; Concrete
F; Sand
Different tools and equipment applied was,
A; Tape measure
B Excavator
C; Buckets
D; Square meter
E;Ropes
The stone masonry box culvert includes the following parts:•
1: Head wall
2: Wing Wall
3:An apron (inlet and outlet)
During construction process of stone masonry box culvert, so some of the steps have to be followed, the
following are the steps in construction of stone masonry box culvert,
11
MBEYA UNIVESTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Site clearance; since the site was located in wooden areas, therefore, timbers both follen and standing was
moved away.
Thus in site clearance, all stamps, roots, boulders, vegetation and rubbish were excavated and moved away
from the site,
Also, during setting outmatch the area required for construction of stone masonry box culvert was measured,
dimensions obtained were as follows;
8m long X 0.9m high X 0.9m wide.
The pegs were fixed to indicate the required area.
Tools and equipments applied during site clearance was as follows,
Excavator
Hoes
An axle
Pegs
Ropes
Tape measure
Saw
Square
After clearing the site, excavation of the stone masonry box culvert trench begin, excavation involve the
process of making hollow for a culvert, The excavated trench must follow the dimensions required for
a culvert, The trench created had the dimensions as follows;
8.4 m long,1.5 m wide,1m depth, and 1.25 m for apron,
During excavation of the trench, different tools and equipment were applied as follows,
Excavator
An axle
Hoes
Tape measure
Pegs and Ropes

As the trench is already made, hard course are applied to the surface in order to provide strength and stability
of the culvert, the compacted hard course prevent damage to the culvert during water flow, as they made the
walls of the stone masonry box culvert strong, also erosion effect are reduced using this layer, usually we
applied hard course of Class 15 ( C 15)
The thickness required for the hard course was 200 mm thick, and materials applied was hard course/ stone

The steel bars used were of 12mm in diameter, the steel fixed provide the surface for
head wall and apron, and also top slab,
Y12mm steel are used because they are high yield tensile bars,
Length of the steel used was 8.4 m and 1.5m in width,
Tools and materials used was,
Reinforcement bars

Steel saw
Binding wire
Space block

culvert.
After finishing, curing for the stone masonry box culvert begins, curing is done by using
water, the main purpose of curing is to increase strength of the constructed culvert,
after 28 days the culvert was found to be dry and safe for use!
2.4 SUGGESTIONS
There must be improvement in the TARURA budget so as to manage the required

2.5 CONCLUSION
Generally, at TARURA MANAGER'S DISTRICT OFFICE, we learned about many things concerning about
road structure and construction, culvert construction, retaining walls construction, materials quantification for
pedestrian bridge, reshaping ,rehabilitation of roads, and maintenance of roads,
2.6 EVALUATION
TARURA at BUKOMBE DISTRICT MANAGER'S OFFICE, gave me the ability to identify how and in which
way different masonry work can be constructed, also I acquired the ability to identify materials required for
concrete casting like [Link] for class 20,
Thus during IPT studies, I was able to know the different tools and equipment for road maintenance, like
excavator, caterpillar, heavy compact machine, and concrete mixer machine,
Also am able to quantify materials like sand, aggregate, cement and water
